Maybe people are too scared their thread will nose dive and don't have the confidence to post.

Nah, some are less inane/rambling. I don't mind reading others, the ones I don't just ignore. I doubt that there would be an ermmm... audience for mine and sometimes it's easier to just post on other's threads.

I think even regular thread contributors have had a few ignored threads at some point. Just need to keep doing it and sometimes it boils down to posting a thread at a quiet time.

Anything I have to say/muse over I do with family and friends. If I'm stuck on something, if himself doesn't know Google is my friend.

I pop on for distraction etc, just the same as when I pick up a book instead of writing one.

I used to get a lot of shit when I posted threads because many people don't understand what a debate is. They assumed if I asked a question that was what I thought.

It didn't bother me at all, they are entitled to their opinion.

I’ve posted a few over the years, the majority just end up getting a few comments, then go to page 2 to never be seen again. You can often see a similar thread created later and as a woman has posted it, then it will find its legs on here.

But that’s the nature of the beast on the forums, so I’d rather contribute than create.

I've started lots of threads in the Irish forum.

I don't like repetitive stuff so most are just for fun while others as serious fab questions if I see something I believe to be wrong.

Some get numerous replies but some get very few and go to fab hell but I've never bumped one ever.

I do like random though. Best thread I ever started was when I wanted to find out what people did when waiting for the kettle to boil, good that was.

Maybe we should make a pact, if we notice that someone on this thread has started a thread we should rescue it....

Be nice to have different content rather than the ranty and repetitive.

I feel if you start a thread, you should allow yourself time to join in if it takes off

Quite often, I just don't have that time

It's far less time restrictive to follow the threads of those who do have time and chip in with a comment every so often

Yesterday, for example, I did have time, so started 3 or 4 threads

The other thing is, I get bored by seeing the same types of threads repeated time and again

I don't want to be that guy that adds to that frustration for others, so I try and think of new angles and slants or perhaps touch on a subject I haven't seen posted about recently

I don't like doing that. My threads were like a conversation in a pub. My OP would be to get people talking amongst themselves, not all stood in a circle just replying back to me. If that makes sense.

I rarely start threads because they are exhausting if I give them the attention I like. I tend to start threads in sensitive topics, with significant meaning for me, that deserve mutual inquiry into a subject that can generate polarised opinion and emotional responses. I like to facilitate the thread so it goes smoothly and we generate good dialogue which isn’t easy on here at times. So it is incredibly time consuming for me, so I comment when I feel moved to do so on other threads, lurk or just blow off a bit of emotional steam with my usual brand of self disclosure, self-deprecation and vain attempts to be funny.

My reasoning is similar. Plus I don't like to have a load of my comments in a row. And sometimes I won't reply to everyone so I can reply later if I want to bump the thread.

In my almost 5 years here I've not started many, mostly because I rarely think of anything I'm moved enough to post about either serious or silly - some people are thread starters (twisted thread starters ) and others are commenters, I'm generally the latter.

I don't always think threads need to be "facilitated" though, and think that can at times lead to the perception that it's just a group of friends filling a thread and a non-inclusive feel that is potentially the opposite of what facilitating can set out to do e.g. when you log onto a 100 post thread and 30 or more of the posts are the OP and 30 or so more are obviously people the OP knows it *can* diminish the inclusiveness.

I don't think a thread needs to have a high response count to be considered relevant or even popular though - they're not (or shouldn't be) popularity contests or about whether they're "completed" - my gauge of a thread being good is the level of interest I have in it, not how many responses it generates.

I do both but I think there's too much trolling online these days, negative comments just put people off forums

I very rarely start threads. This is mainly because - particularly during lockdown - I tend to come online for a few minutes and then disappear again.

I feel that when you start a thread there’s an expectation that you stay online to ‘nurture’ it and respond to comments etc - particularly if it’s not a ‘fluffy’ topic!

Also - nobody has actually been able to do much this year - so there isn’t exactly much opportunity for originality, is there?

I’m loathe to start a thread that we’ve had a million times already.

My threads always nose dive. I'm fine with that. I usually post out of boredom then wander off anyway

If they're not about 'fabbing' each other, or some sort of poll about 'who likes...' then they're redundant on this forum.

I tend to ask questions that others might find stupid so for all my stupid needs I use google or ask my husband as he’s used to my stupidness ..I think others might get put off by seeing the sarcastic reply’s some people get when they post..
