North East Scotland, mostly

I've been around the forums for 18 months now. Looking back, I used to be like an excited puppy flirting with people and getting involved in loads of threads! I think I've calmed down now and am generally more measured.

Interested to hear other people's experiences. Have you changed your approach? Why? Or are you just the same?

I am the same I think. I flirt with my friends, compliment pics I like and stray more towards the serious posts and love a pic challenge.

The only new thing this year is the mental battles in the virus section

There and to the left a bit

My approach is the same - it's inherently me and I can't be any different.

The amount I post has changed though, possibly because I've been here 5 years now and so have seen most types of thread in that time and only ones that particularly grab me move me to posting, possibly because there's not so much that holds my interest generally, possibly any number of other reasons - I still turn up most days, still scan through periodically just don't feel moved to post as much as I once did.

La la land

I've been using the forum about a year. And yeah I was a bit like an excited puppy initially as well. As I've been here longer, I'm more likely to start a thread which sometimes are either massively navel gazing or a bit contentious. Something I wouldn't have done initially.

I’d like to think I’m less bolshy.

I try to let things go over my head now rather than jumping down the throat of those who have posted something I disagree with.

I’m not perfect, but this year has been tough on lots of people and I’m trying hard not to be the outspoken twit to upset folk who could be going through all sorts of crap off of here, for all I know.

I used to post threads that I found interesting that would stir discussion/ debate. I liked to see different sides of opinions and to change my perception about things.

Life killed my soul and I've only started a couple of threads since I came back.

^^This^^ really except I've reached about the same stage in 4 months.

First couple of months I was the proverbial excited puppy but it doesn't take long before the edge gets taken off. Or it might just be that the forums are quieter.

I'll post if something grabs me but won't post just for the sake of it. I'll lurk for a bit to read a few threads or bounce a thread which I think should have had more attention.

.

I remember when you first joined Mrs TMN! The excitable puppy analogy is a very good one, I think a lot of posters go through that stage (not that there's anything wrong with that!). I really enjoyed your early curious threads, you've such an inquisitive mind and it's lovely to read.

When I first started posting frequently I was a bit of a 'mare in all honesty. I'd frequently spaff out long words because I could and I'd gleefully patronize folk who had the audacity to say anything I would disagree with or were or attention seeking to a degree I thought was . Don't get me started on how I was with the lamppost pissers.

And then I took some time away, quite a few substantial breaks actually and I made some wonderful friends on here. I became a bit quieter after one awful experience that shook me and took time away again. When I returned I tried to be kinder because I realised, as much as people sometimes post utter tosh, well maybe that's their truth? What do I gain from being a superior dick to them? I'm not perfect by any stretch and sometimes I do see a post that makes dick Meli escape for a little bit but on the whole I'm trying to be more welcoming and friendlier. Even people I don't particularly agree with, I try and show a degree of civility because I don't know them really. I've heard stuff sure, we all have about someone at some point but I prefer to give people a chance.

I still write the same long stream of consciousness though.

Ive changed greatly. Ive been here 14 years and used to be very active. I used to organise quizzes. Get others involved. Id organize and help run socials. I was also a lot more fiesty. I was quite the life and soul of the forums. Plus i was the original starter of fab forum awards for many years.

Then a lot of my friends left and i started getting less involved started taking more of a back seat also my fiestyness has almost dissappeared.

Now adays although i still post a lot i rarely start new threads these days and i dont usually get involved in forum games or popular threads.

Theres a new era of people that start all the inclusive threads and post a lot of new threads its just different big personas. There will always be people keeping the forums rolling just changes of usernames.

Also since i lost my avatar and hid my profile it tends to keep me in the background more.

Im just happy doing my own thing these days but i have changed dramatically also in my swinging life not just on the forums

Yeah I only started using the forums a year or so ago. I don't do the flirty thing anymore and generally only post in threads I'm genuinely interested in. So mainly music and inane chat ones, or ones that I think need a sarcy comment.

I try to keep away from forums posts that are deliberately created to be divisive, unless it’s something I’m personally affected by.

But the main difference from when I started is knowing who on these forums to ignore and those who’s I don’t because they have opinions I respect. Just knowing who to interact with, makes it a more pleasant pastime.

I’ve never really been paid attention to in the forums. I’m not bothered, I get enough attention outside of them!

I mainly come on here when I’m bored and I don’t have messages to reply to. I also get useful info re clubs and events going on etc.

So much better now that a few forum hoggers have gone on a break or something... much easier and pleasant to read. Till they come back, haha.

I used to be a lot more involved but after experiencing bullying through the forums I'm now careful what I post, I avoid the ranty threads, try and avoid the lick arse ones and the clique ones. If I post now I just post something to spread a bit of a distraction or fun. To many trying to score points of each other.

As for flirting how does one do that?

I would agree with you. Same here and I think I have not changed in my outlook (I love chatting to people, even if we do not agree) but I am more conscious that something I would write in a forum post (without body language, tone of voice, smile... would not necessarily be received in the intended way.

I guess I think more about how I post, the words I use etc.

Thanks everyone, sorry I've been so lax in curating this thread! I've found it really interesting. I love seeing how people interact both on here and in real life and I'm also interested in how my own interactions have changed. I think I definitely worry less about what other people are thinking about me and just do me, whatever mood I'm in that day! I have been guilty of the "oh the forums are less fun than they used to be" but I think that's down to familiarity, faces changing, my mood and of course let's not forget a GLOBAL FUCKING PANDEMIC The old maxim of "you get out what you put in" rings true for me, I think x

Never really bothered with the forums till recently (mainly isolation boredom)

The light hearted, fun ones like 'pick your favourite pic from poster above' are good in small doses and they give you a small ego boost.

And it's nice when one of your posts takes off and gets lots of inputs like one of my music ones did recently.

On the downside, the forums do appear a bit cliquey at times with the same people interacting.

I do interact with those I know more than those I don't. I'm aware I'm quite like or loathey and my humour isn't always on target. I'd not want to genuinely upset someone who didn't really know how to take me so I can be wary.

That's a fair comment.

I guess if you invest time in the forums then you'll get to know more folk and expand the circle of whom you interact with.

I've got two weeks in here so should be fine lol

All forums are cliquey, it's the nature of the beast. This is no worse or better than others I've faffed with over the years.

"My approach, when I’m here is no different to how it was when I joined 2 years ago, I will comment on what I wish to comment on. Lately that is not much at all, it’s become a very different place this year, so I just find myself logging on scrolling, scrolling and then leave.

Keep scrolling, scrolling, scrolling

I'm far less active contribute less and seem to find less that piques my interest enough to comment on, so its changed in that respect.

Now I wander in have a read and more often than not wander away with only minimal interaction with others....

The forums have always been a cycle of peaks and troughs, and to me this seems like another trough where the fun sparky funny threads are less to the fore, where many have left the forums and where whether by covid or that natural cycle it all feels a bit subdued...

I've been here nearly 6 years and was absolutely scared shitless of posting after my first thread was ripped to pieces. But I gradually found my feet, made lots of good friends, got involved in the socials and clubs and, on the whole enjoyed the Forums. However, I was bullied and trolled by a gang of meanies and left for a while but came back again more confident. Lately, it's become less lighthearted and so depressing so I don't participate much. I hardly know any of the new folk and most of my friends have left.

Just been here for a few months, the forums have been a brutal at times but I have thick skin, so I don't let things like that bother me. I personally think some ppl jump on a person's thread to try to demean or attack them rather than contribute to the discussion and people here get easily offended and stuff like that.

I just ignore certain comments tbh and keep it moving OP

I'm glad you stayed. Your early threads seemed to get pounced on by people who have trouble understanding the written word. Or they were deliberately being arsey.

You were very patient and nice in spite of it all.

North East Scotland, mostly

Ah, this thread is still rolling!

It's interesting seeing different takes on it. I have never been part of any other online forum so have nothing to compare it with. Initially I was on A LOT then after a while started to see the same threads coming round, some of my pals left, I felt a bit lost and jaded. I stuck around though, sometimes interacting more, sometimes less, depending on my mood and what piqued my interest.

In terms of starting threads, some fly, and some don't! I used to feel disheartened if something didn't take off but now I'm not fussed - depends how the other posters interact, time of day, subject matter - sometimes I find something really interesting/funny and other people clearly do not

The dreaded clique word - I think there will always be a group of people who get on and bounce off each other, post on each other's threads and seem intimidating to newbies - but I think it's rarely malicious. It's like coming into any established group, it takes time and effort to connect with people. It also changes over time as big personalities come and go.

TL:DR; the forums ebb and flow, you do you, don't believe the clique hype

I don't contribute anywhere near as much as I used to.

Through my years on here, the forums do change. As someone else said, it's peaks and troughs, it is what it is.

It just all seems a bit 'flat' at the moment, plus my time is needed elsewhere these days so I don't have the time to contribute as much on here.

I'm going to come out with it and really rock the Apple Cart here...

I've seen you go at new posters and be very sarcastic (and not in a nice, fun way either) across the board, so it's no wonder people get put off posting! I'll always fight for the under-dog or say what a lot of people want to but can't because they're sick of being 'ganged-up on'! so there, said it. Inbox is open should you want to 'discuss' !
