I used to watch F1 back when Senna, Prost, Mansell and a young Damon Hill were racing. Got excited again with Schumacher but due to being a biker turned to Motorcycle instead.

A lot more overtaking, crashes and last minute leads taken on the last lap. Plus I was a lot more emphatic to a guy on two wheels racing through wind and rain, than a guy on four.

However I do appreciate the skills and greatness of Lewis Hamilton and what he’s achieved. But the enjoyment of F1 left me a long time ago. Due to that I’ve never really seen or enjoyed his racing but expect him to get Sports Personality of the Year in a few weeks time

I don’t like him as a person, or as how he comes across when he’s out the car I should say.

But when he is in that car, he is exactly what I said above. He becomes part of it and knows exactly what he can and cannot do. Proven today, by over ruling his team and choosing to power on through with shredded tyres. He’s deserving of his victories. I just wish he was more camera/fan orientated and not a fucking piece of cheese.

He also has a hard neck to campaign for global warming and tell us, the masses, that we need to do more for our planet and consume a lot less fossil fuels. Wut??

He's pushing for change and does a lot of work when it comes to climate change,that's why he has created a team to race in Extreme E next year

As motor racing, cars and bikes is my favourite sport sometimes you just have to accept greatness within that sport. I am lucky enough to have witnessed quite a few great riders and drivers over my lifetime. Mike Hailwood, Joey Dunlop, John Mcguinnes, John Surtees, Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna and Valentino Rossi. But this afternoon i think i watched the most controlled, crafted and thought out F1 drive i have ever watched by a driver that in my mind is THE greatest F1 driver anyone has seen to date.

I think a few have hit the nail on the head. He's obviously a great driver but he does come across as a bit of a tool. A by product of fame and being a multi-millionaire perhaps? He also dated that "schamazing" woman so not sure he's the type of dude I'd want to have a pint with.

Can't knock his achievements though, absolutely phenomenal. And while he's still only 35 he's probably got another 10 years in him if the drive (no pun intended!) is stil there and he stays healthy.

You could argue although he needs the skill to win races the car is what it's all about these days. So many computers and other things they almost drive themselves. No one bear him at the moment. You could argue Michael was the better driver on the day. Very arrogant and ignorant man is our Lewis. Always going on about injustice and hardships. He had never had it so easy in his life getting to where he is now. Nice to know he pays his fare share of taxes, as well whilst living in Monoco. His fair share could help reduce the poor divide in this country or go towards new hospitals etc. But obviously he is not the only fair taxdodger. Still can't take away his success though being British and a good role model for black youth

F1 drivers are generally (un) interesting, self absorbed creatures, I don't think those qualities are exclusive to Hamilton.

They have an insular life, in a rarified activity and most are entrenched in it from an early age.

The 70's & 80's had some charasmatic characters-fast living, life & soul of the party types but the majority were reflective, competitive and arrogant where their own ability was concerned. Modern drivers are all that and more..without the boozing & women!

"I used to watch F1 back when Senna, Prost, Mansell and a young Damon Hill were racing. Got excited again with Schumacher but due to being a biker turned to Motorcycle instead.

A lot more overtaking, crashes and last minute leads taken on the last lap. Plus I was a lot more emphatic to a guy on two wheels racing through wind and rain, than a guy on four.

Great sportsmen? Absolutely. They were winners and legends in their respective sports.

Great people? Questionable for various reasons.

For every Faldo or Tiger there's a Seve.

For every Keane there's a Bobby Charlton.

It’s not just one little car that he drives around the track that’s going to make the difference. Think of the logistics, right through from R&D, all the way to the race and then packing up again.

I am not a big fan of F1 or the most knowledgeable on F1 but well done to Lewis Hamilton on equaling Michael Schumacher record of 7 world driver’s titles and also the outright leader of most F1 wins.To the more knowledgeable of you on F1 he may not be the greatest F1 driver as there is more technology than in years gone by but to my way of thinking he is the most successful as the numbers don’t lie.

Not a particular fan of Hamilton.

But what he's done in this sport is incredible.

In recent years he's had the good fortune of a excellent car behind him but occasionally (like this weekend) he gets sucked into the pack and has to drive his way out, its skill, bravery and strategy.

He's one heck of a driver and I think its quite apt he wins the record equalling seventh world championship after his drive this weekend.

Also enjoyed Vettel nicking a podium spot too, seemed kinda poetic after everything they've gone through.

You can’t. They are all simply fantastic (At raging) in their own right. But you have to remember that everyone they are up against at that time are open to all the same software & hardware. So at this time there is no better driver than Ham. At Shumacer’s time, there was no better driver than him, and so on.

You can lay similar on Agostini. His early wins for MV he was on a new fangled multi cylinder & many others were still using British Single Cylinder bikes. As soon as Yamaha started showing the TZ 2stroke multi’s he jumped ship & went with them.

His closest competitor was usually his team mate as he was the only one on competitive machinery.

Yes he's currently in the best team, but the best drivers float to the top. You don't see players like Messi playing for Cambridge either, and if he did he'd probably not look at good as he does as like football, F1 is a team sport. I don't remember the other F1 greats winning the majority of their races and titles in shit teams either. Lewis has bested all teammates when reliability hasn't interfered and was up there with Alonso as a rookie. Since then I'd say he's become the most complete driver the sport we has ever seen. He's still got tons of raw pace, possibly still as quick as Leclerc or Max, and Micheal or Senna, if not then close. But his race craft, strategy, car management, tyre management, ability to drive better in poor conditions, fairness on track, motivation, mental approach, and consistency are what probably put him over the other greats. He has almost no weaknesses and performs every weekend. I have no idea what he's really like as a person, I've never met him. But the stats don't lie, and if it's was all the car the teammates would beat him and as someone else said, Merc would just replace him with a cheaper talented kid from F2.

Today he proved how rounded he's become as a driver, as well is being incredibly fast.

Thing is for me F1 has lost its way. One lap into a race & the difference between first & last can be 20 seconds plus. Hamilton in one race was 4 seconds in front by the end of lap one!

I can’t remember which round but in a MotoGP race this year after 50 minutes of racing the difference between first & last was just over 4 seconds!

In qualifying the difference between the sharp & blunt ends of the grid is usually not much more than 1.5 seconds with the top 15 usually less than 1 second apart.

If one person wins a majority of races then they are not only better than everyone else but they are also getting more support within a team.

Look at Honda once Marquez was injured, nowhere, nada, zilch because the whole bike is built how MM wants it & no one else can ride it, not even his own brother with his help! You could also argue that having to ride bikes built to MM requirements may have helped put an end to Cal Cruthlows racing career?

Anyway Lewis has the 7 but I’d like to see him sitting in something else either in F1 or another form of racing just to put that one to bed as it were.

Amazing achievement and it has come from years of dedication from a very early age. Personally I like him. Why does he have to come over well? It is probably those same personality traits that have driven him from such a young age. I envy that commitment.

None of us know the real person behind the celebrity image. Many spend years pretending to be someone we all love and others just say what they think like Lewis.

It always surprises me that Fab has so many judgemental people. I always expect to find more open minded people.

for those knocking his talent & ability goto utube look up.his top gear appearance where he did star in a reasonable car lap .watch it how totally relaxed and normal he is like he's going to the shops for a few Tbags just tootling around like he doesent care then look at his times compared with all the other profesional drivers he is way in front of them all then realise the lap was in the wet unlike all the others . that takes talent and skill not luck exceptional driver for me focused arrogant winner dont care about the rest thats his job and he does it and does it well .

The technology has certainly improved but so has the mental acuity and physical fitness.

It seems like a lot of people don't like the fact its now Lewis who's doing it. It makes one think that its got to do with his race and no I'm not pulling the race card but it is what it is

Not taking away from his achievements, but just how much is that down to his mercedes team being undeniably a step above everyone else.

Long gone are the days were a truly talented driver could still shone and overcome his team's / car shortcomings, but no longer. You only have to be a competent driver to have a good shot at being champion if you have the best car.

It's one of the reasons F1 no longer captivates me. Too boring...too predictable...way too expensive.

I am not a fan of Formula 1 but I watched the highlights today and even though I knew the result and have been bored watching highlights before, it was exciting to watch. Particularly hearing Hamilton make the big call, it must have been even more exciting watching it yesterday.

F1 one keeps evolving like every other sport. Mercedes are a great but but the decisions that Lewis makes and the was he drives is what makes him the greatest of this era

You can go through any era's of any sport and the most memorable have always been about the rivalry involved with the tussles they had, with Hamilton he hasn't really had any serious rivals so has been classed as boring and down to the car being more competitive than the rest.

A lot more overtaking, crashes and last minute leads taken on the last lap. Plus I was a lot more emphatic to a guy on two wheels racing through wind and rain, than a guy on four.

Marc Marquez is the the fucking boy!

I prefer Hickman, at least he has what it takes to master the TT course.

Daaaam the comments tho, just be happy for him. Forget the attitude, ignore whatever you think you know or sense about him. He’s a world champion and represents the United Kingdom. It might take a very long time to see his type from the U.K. again so please appreciate his accomplishments, I have watched him, seeing him drive on numerous times same as other drivers, he’s unique in his own way, so as everyone else should be.

I've not knocked his achievements either as in any sport at the highest end has to have ability, F1 to me is nothing like what it used to be and I believe Hamilton hasn't been the best to promote the sport inspite of his achievements.

I used to be a major fan of F1 in the 80s and 90s much less so now for numerous reasons. I don't really like Hamilton for the stuff he says etc put like all of us he's only a product of his generation I can think if any "youngish personalities" I have warmed to but that's probably cos I'm a technofobic grumpy old git. So any future champions or personalities ain't gonna impress me either. One thing is beyond doubt I think is that Hamilton is a truly outstanding talent ok he was pushed by his Dad in his early years but he properly cut his teeth as a school kid in the grass roots of the sport he wasn't pushed by a wealthy family having been born with a silver spoon etc nor did he have a former racing driver dad to open doors for him. I doubt there will ever be another world champion multiple or otherwise that comes from such a background. Annoying etc as he maybe he is bloody good and deserves his titles good luck to him1
