A real question about a domestic issue.......

The ironing......

I still iron. I have to. I'd be a scruff otherwise.

Why do some people not iron? They don't look scruffy and i'm jealous.

So my Q is this......

Is there a knack to material knowledge ?

Don't tell me to lay washing flat..... as if I already don't.

Don't tell me to tumble dry.

Now...... unleash your arsenal.

Out of the machine/tumble and straight onto a hanger.

Spin your washing after the cycle, really really shake it out after and let it dry on hangers.

I’ll leave blouses in Gen bathroom to steam out, or hang them in the airing cupboard

Don't overfill the machine or run on the highest spin setting, shake out and take care when hanging to dry and neatly fold when still slightly damp. I havent ironed for years, the only time I do is if I have a wedding or funeral to attend and need to look razor sharp. Luckily my work clothes are maintenance coveralls that don't need ironed.

Not a fan of tumble dryers, I find they shrink stuff over time and they definitely don't get all creases out of a shirt if you need to wear one!

And hanging stuff on hangers only makes stuff "less creased". If your hangers can remove all creases and make stuff look ironed then I suggest you get on Dragon's Den!

I used to "iron for the week" every Sunday while watching the footy but it's on an "as required" basis now.

Natural fabrics (cotton, linen, silk) will need ironing regardless.

Polyester is hydrophobic (doesn't like water) so will dry quickly, hardly crease and not keep hold of pit stink.

In the USA they sell stuff that you spray on clothes that helps to remove creases. Using it in conjunction with the hanging and steaming, cooler washes etc is ideal. Possibly you have to forsake some material obsessions Granny, a little mix of synthetic n there

What a lot of people don't realise is that most ironing boards are not fit for purpose.

This is because the square end is usually fitted with an iron stand, which leaves the pointed end only for ironing on.

This makes it really awkward for ironing shirts, as you can't shape them properly over the end of the board. Traditional ironing boards never had iron stands, because the square end is supposed to be used for shirts. Any good butler will tell you this.

I have an ironing board with no iron stand, and I can tell you it makes ironing shirts a hell of a lot easier.

I can iron shirts properly on an ironing board with the stand at one end. I can iron both left and right handed, seems to help.

I also hate ironing. I was forced to iron EVERYTHING as a child by my mother, including those elasticated bottom sheets that don't lie flat. Even on the day I gave birth, my mother had me slaving over the ironing board and I think I nearly keeled over with the heat (it was August 2002 and jolly warm).

Childhood experience means I now avoid ironing by hanging thing on hangars over radiators, using drying racks that hang on the radiator and make sure things are flat on there.

Seems to work for us......

I didn't know this my ironing board doesn't have an iron stand built in, it's a heat pad that you can move to anywhere on the board.

Spray a mist of water dab some water on the stubborn creases before your put your clothes on. You body heat can help 'iron out' the crease.
