Shaving up or down?

I know this isn't a Saturday Night question but I was once told that both shaving and applying medication to the body should be downwards and not upwards. Something to do with hair follicles becoming infected apparently.

Has anyone else had an issue with this?

Nope. I shave down first then up and never had any kind of infections... im just guessing its ppl using crappy old razors and not keeping them clean.. or themselves for that matter

Buy good quality razors. Use a balm. Or even hair conditioner is good. It helps avoid stubble rash.

And then moisturize afterwards.

Going in the direction the hair grows obviously wont give you as close of a shave.

Or just use veet cream hair removal cream it's easier.

This is a recent discovery for me, but down to trim hairs to a reasonable length, then up to get a close shave. Thank me later.

You're right so I'll thank you now!

I don't shave often, just trim, but when I do I go with the growth to get rid of most then across the grain to finish. It's damn near as close as shaving against the growth with a lot less chance of a rash.

I shave all over, and in all directions very regularly, to make sure it is completely smooth. Using a good quality razor ( I use a Gillette Venus) and moisturiser, personally have never had any issue with shaving rash - anywhere!

Missin’ Yo’ Kissin’

I use a hair trimmer to reduce my beard to stubble.

Then apply a gel foam and then shave downwards then side to side with one of the latest manual shavers. Same for neck region.

To finish the neck with a close shave I shave upwards. Then use a warm flannel and a balm if I have one...

Forgot to say I also use a razor with balm on it!

Down to get the bulk off, up to get a smooth finish. Just make sure you have sharp blades or you'll just pull the hairs

Before the beard I'd have a rigorous shaving regime to avoid cuts and rashes (I was always prone to them)

Shower

Apply shave coconut butter

Shave down

Apply again

Shave up

Cold water splash

Dry

Moisturise

Then go about my day until I find that one fucking hair that I missed

More great replies, it's strange as you think something so routine would be well...routine but not so
