"5 -10 years if you maintain it properly. The killer of any washing machine is hard water and the build-up around the heating elements. Try to descale it every couple of weeks and also clean any moulds" I wish I could tell you that I will descale every two weeks and mean it. Sadly I can't.  | |||

"I'd assume 10 years plus. I expect that most investments like these would be 10 - 15 years and possibly longer. I certainly don't like to change things by fashion and that manufacturers should be making these to be durable and very long lived. We should only need a tiny number of these in our lifetimes. There may be very occasional major technological breakthroughs but with old established technology, the expertise is there to make them substantially durable. When I was in India I had to ask the girl who did my washing not to slap my tee shirts so hard on the stone she used for the washing. They were wearing out too fast . She didn't half get them clean though. "My Granny only believed housework was done properly if it involved physical effort. She made her own cleaning solution rather than buy it, she ironed EVERYTHING, she had an ancient Hoover that required muscles like Popeye to move and she pre washed most of what went in the washing machine | |||

Our first washing machine in our little flat came from my stepdad's dad's house. It was probably 20yrs old or more when we inherited it and it lasted from 2005-2009 and it was only the door that wouldn't shut properly. No parts available for such an old machine though, otherwise the actual mechanism was fine. "This one of ours that's just gone bang has got a sealed unit inside and the panel at the back is so small it would be difficult to work on. It's designed to be throw away, which is wrong. | |||

A lot less than years ago! I had a machine for 20 years, I've had 2 within 6 years now!"I was in school when my mum bought her washing machine. It's had a couple of repairs like new pumps and things and it's still going strong. They don't make them like that anymore. | |||

"When I moved into this flat 7 years ago, I bought a 2nd, probably 4th or 5th hand one off someone else who was moving out. Paid £30 for it and it only gave up the ghost about 6 months ago. Bought a reconditioned Hoover washer/drier for £130 with a 2 year guarantee
That's the way to go I think. Up until about 15 years ago electrical goods lasted a long time. We had second hand washing machines, vacuum cleaners etc that just seemed to go on for years. "Obviously living alone and not working any more, I don't have to use it as much as when I worked on site and ma ex had to have clean clothes on everyday as a carer. I just run some descaler through it and make sure that the filters are clean and the job's a good un | |||

"Our Bosch is 16 years old and still going strong." I bought a Bosch condenser drier for about £450 many years ago, ma ex ended up with that and that's still good as new | |||

It was different when we were both working, the kids were at school and had pe kit, football kit, school uniform etc. Now it's just us and our crimplene slacks and nice cardis | |||

I have a AEG tumble dryer 10 years old.
