I can hear an owl in the trees outside

It's out there making classic owl noises..oooh whoo oooh ( that's the owl, not me)

Any idea what kind it might be?

That description sounds like a male tawny owl. The female makes the classic t'wit sound so if you hear t'wit woo woo, it is likely a pair calling to each other.
