Attitude changes in one generation

If you look back to how things were in the 1970s or early ‘80s, they were very different.

I’m not taking about how you’d meet up with friends by knocking on their door instead of creating a Kik group, but more the attitudes and outlook.

Racism is a little improved now, because while it still happens at least some people are a bit more ashamed of it.

The standard of living for many has increased and displays of it are acceptable. Putting pictures of the new premium brand family car on Facebook is more important than showing the 3 years of debt to finance it.

Whilst things like entitlement and privilege still exist (perhaps even more now the gap between rich and poor is wider), at least more people are aware of it.

What changes do you think will happen in the next 30 - 40 years? What would you like to see actually change?

I think change is something that has continually happened since the dawn of time and is often driven by technology/invention as well as social factors - compare the world today to 100 years ago for example and it is vastly different.

Acceptance and respect for all regardless of creed, colour, class, status, sexuality etc should be the ultimate aim regardless of generation - will never happen 100% (that's for the idealists) but should still be the aim.

What's in store the next 30-40 years? Economic devastation and collapse of western society as we know it. The product of loose monetary policy, unchecked corruption of central banks and the politicians they control and unchecked, uncontrolled immigration of people who will not integrate and hate who we are.

An oppressive police state is the future, and if you have any doubts, see how easily they took away our most fundamental freedoms this year with virtually no resistance. The best years are behind us. My children will inherent 1984, Farenheit 451 and Brave New World.

Less social interaction seems to be actively encouraged for various reasons these days and will get worse.

Working and studying from home could become more normal. If we as humans don't mix together the world can't be a better place surely.

If society stays in it's own social bubble I fear for the future of my grandchildren.

I hope for better and fear for worse. We have the tools and the discourse to be able to break free from the shackles of our past.

But in a time of growing economic upheaval, dismantling of safety nets, and widening of economic and educational inequality, these may be meaningless as we all just try to hang on. Many governments seem to be exploiting these fears and using our baser natures against us.

I hope. I fear. But I never stop trying.

Looking back over the last 1000 years it's been a case of two steps forward one step back in terms of human advancement and change for the better. I ttnought that might continue but it could be that we're in for a lot more steps backward if climate change can't be brought under control.

Always. I think we tend to impose some sort of teleology. Changes happen outside our value systems.

Climate change isn't the only threat I see, but it's certainly the biggest one. We have dark times ahead.

Or maybe we're just at a turning point where the corruption and intolerance that has been leading the english speaking western world for the last 4 years will be rejected by enough of the population to make the difference. We have seen the leaders of the USA and the UK, and their governing parties, blatently using the 1984 tactic of not just lying but actually denying the truth of openly visible events. Making the law into something that is not just quietly evaded, but openly broken by those writing the law. Handing multi million pound contracts to friends and relatives with not even a pretence of propriety.

I choose to hope that ultimately the majority of people are good and decent and tolerant, and that the corner will be turned. Maybe we won't get a new golden age (that never was) but at least 1984 and Brave New World will be avoided.

I think it's been interesting seeing rights eroded for out groups. They must have deserved it somehow. Now when ours are taken away, explicitly temporarily, explicitly for a clear danger to society - the world is ending and the government have too much power which they can use illegitimately.

This has, of course, always been true, it's just not many have cared until it got personal.
