I'm interested in what people think here, I have a few in mind but I'm into rock!

I'm starting with the Faith No More cover of Black Sabbaths War Pigs. Mike Pattons voice is so much more fitting!

What's yours?

FnM War Pigs is a country mile better than the original.

I am a big fan of Metallica's Whiskey in the jar too.

As far as I’m concerned the best cover I’ve heard is “hurt”, a cover by Johnny Cash of a song by nine inch nails.

The cover far surpassed the original.

I rate this over the much loved guns and roses cover of “live and let die” by Wings

Another if I may, the original Something Stupid, covered by Frank and Nancy Sinatra, was written and recorded by Carson and Gaile which I think was brilliant, it is still thought today to be an original by Sinatra, what a shame that Carson and Gaile have been ignored all this time, yes I know they probably get royalty’s , don’t shoot me

"

It's not a hill worth dying over.

According to Wiki

"Torn" was written in 1993 by Scott Cutler and Anne Preven with producer Phil Thornalley as a solo song for Preven. Cutler and Preven's band Ednaswap who performed it live.

I'd say any other artistic interpretation and rendition of that original song meets the very definition of a cover, wouldn't you ?

"For all those saying Disturbed - Sound of silence, check out the live version with Myles Kennedy "

Watching the video "Disturbed - The Sound of Silence [Live in Houston w/ Myles Kennedy]" from August 2016.

It's... horrible! Bald guys voice, it just so corny, so overwrought, so 1992. But then that's just my view of that mass market rock / metal in general, nothing with that song I guess. So much more actually interesting / fun noise out there.

However, I didn't realise until now that Rush's Spirit of Radio took lyrics from Sound of Silence. Those last few lines never made sense until now, so that was cool to find out.

And that is the mark of a great cover version - not necessarily making it better but making it "different" and stamping their own originality on it to the point that some people don't realise it's a cover.

One Step Beyond and It Must Be Love by Madness are two good examples of this that a lot of people don't know are covers.

Or Denis and The Tide Is High by Blondie

Another personal favourite is this take on Oasis' "Roll With It" by an Italian band called The Bluebeaters

TBH I disagree with these, the originals are both just amazing, and Johnny seemed to "talk sing" these a little too much. A little... Shatner-eqsue in places. Still good, but... Actually I loooved his version of Rusty Cage. When it really starts stomping halfway through.

I know Ewan McCall hated her version of his song, but First Time Ever I Saw Her Face, Roberta Flack version is better in my opinion. As is Whitney Houston's version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You.

I was watching Here I Am the other day and Dolly sid in that how it was Whitneys song. She wrote the music, but the performance was so far above and so different to the song Dolly wrote, that it was absolutely hers.

I was quite impressed with this actually. Rearranging the guitar rhythm, properly "converting" it to that style rather than just cloning it.

Yeah but I find that what was once quite an original rearrangement of the parts have become quite repetitive over the years, especially his additional breakdowns, that’s just my opinion though

Agreed RBF are awesome and their covers are brilliant - if you like ska covers of different songs check out the following:

The Bluebeaters - they've done Roll With It, Toxic and The Model which are all brilliant

https://youtube.com/channel/UCyyYJXezMlPdxiswin5Y__g

Rude Boy George - again do some brilliant covers Town Called Malice, Driving In My Car, Kids In America

https://youtube.com/c/Rudeboygeorgeband

The Simmertones - Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps (yes the Doris Day song), Doctor Who theme and some great originals too

"S.R. (Masters Version) Live" on their Best Of album is 8 minutes of sheer brilliance and although not a cover highlights how a song can be changed just by altering the style - is basically the same song played in about 10 different styles over the course of the track

"Johnny Cash, Hurt and London Grammar, Wicked Game for me. "

I agree with the Cash cover, yes - it's so powerful.

Meantime I was going to suggest The Byrds' cover of Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue". Seldom is a Dylan cover better than the original but this one is, I think. The vocal harmonies on the chorus in particular...

Coincidentally, Brandi Carlisle's cover of "The Times They Are a-changin'", live on...KEXP, I want to say, made the hairs on my arms stand up.

And I love Dylan's original of that one.
