"I'm interested in what people think here, I have a few in mind but I'm into rock! I'm starting with the Faith No More cover of Black Sabbaths War Pigs. Mike Pattons voice is so much more fitting! What's yours? " FnM War Pigs is a country mile better than the original. I am a big fan of Metallica's Whiskey in the jar too.

"The Clash - I Fought The Law (originally by The Bobby Fuller Four) Siouxsie & The Banshees - Dear Prudence (Originally by The Beatles) Anti-Nowhere League – Streets of London (Originally by Ralph McTell) And some guilty pleasures... Tiffany - I Think We’re Alone Now (Originally by Tommy James & The Shondells) Natalie Imbruglia - Torn (Originally by Ednaswap)" Torn isn't a cover. It's a professionally written song sold to multiple artists. I will die on this hill.

" Torn isn't a cover. It's a professionally written song sold to multiple artists. I will die on this hill. " It's not a hill worth dying over. According to Wiki "Torn" was written in 1993 by Scott Cutler and Anne Preven with producer Phil Thornalley as a solo song for Preven. Cutler and Preven's band Ednaswap who performed it live. I'd say any other artistic interpretation and rendition of that original song meets the very definition of a cover, wouldn't you ?

"For all those saying Disturbed - Sound of silence, check out the live version with Myles Kennedy " Watching the video "Disturbed - The Sound of Silence [Live in Houston w/ Myles Kennedy]" from August 2016. It's... horrible! Bald guys voice, it just so corny, so overwrought, so 1992. But then that's just my view of that mass market rock / metal in general, nothing with that song I guess. So much more actually interesting / fun noise out there. However, I didn't realise until now that Rush's Spirit of Radio took lyrics from Sound of Silence. Those last few lines never made sense until now, so that was cool to find out.

And that is the mark of a great cover version - not necessarily making it better but making it "different" and stamping their own originality on it to the point that some people don't realise it's a cover. One Step Beyond and It Must Be Love by Madness are two good examples of this that a lot of people don't know are covers. Or Denis and The Tide Is High by Blondie Another personal favourite is this take on Oasis' "Roll With It" by an Italian band called The Bluebeaters https://youtu.be/xTHbWbEM0F0

"For anyone who likes rock/metal (or even if you don't) then you should check out Sweden's Hellsongs. Stand out covers are 'Seasons in the Abyss', 'Paranoid' and 'Orgasmatron'. Johnny Cash's versions of 'I See A Darkness' and 'The Mercy Seat'. " TBH I disagree with these, the originals are both just amazing, and Johnny seemed to "talk sing" these a little too much. A little... Shatner-eqsue in places. Still good, but... Actually I loooved his version of Rusty Cage. When it really starts stomping halfway through. Did you see BPB's later reworking of I See A Darkness? Seems he found some light after all.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iV4NwSbscg

"Any song by the Kinks. Ray Davis is a songwriting genius, but their original recordings always sound Underpowered to me. David Watts - The Jam And it's not a cover per se, but Kylie singing "I should be so lucky" on Jools Holland hootenanny 2007, slower than the original. " An example would be Days - Kirsty Maccoll Also A New England - Kirsty Maccoll. So good that even the composer Billy Bragg sings Kirsty's extra verse.

Yeah but I find that what was once quite an original rearrangement of the parts have become quite repetitive over the years, especially his additional breakdowns, that’s just my opinion though

(Masters Version) Live" on their Best Of album is 8 minutes of sheer brilliance and although not a cover highlights how a song can be changed just by altering the style - is basically the same song played in about 10 different styles over the course of the track

"Johnny Cash, Hurt and London Grammar, Wicked Game for me. " I agree with the Cash cover, yes - it's so powerful. Meantime I was going to suggest The Byrds' cover of Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue". Seldom is a Dylan cover better than the original but this one is, I think. The vocal harmonies on the chorus in particular... Coincidentally, Brandi Carlisle's cover of "The Times They Are a-changin'", live on...KEXP, I want to say, made the hairs on my arms stand up. And I love Dylan's original of that one.

Just because a sling is noisier its somehow officially better. Bleurgh. Awful song, just pure commercial production. Compressed, auto tuned, sterile and zero personality. What's a "sling"? Just to put it out there its a great cover and Dolores was involved in its production before she passed, my thinking is if it was good enough for her it's good enough for me Also, the film "across the universe" is a musical based on beatles songs/characters. The covers in this film are absolutely fantastic, in particular "I've just seen a face" " Yes, Dolores was originally going to sing on the Bad Wolves version so she must have considered it worthy!

"Disturbed have done a few good covers, not just the sound of silence, from the likes of genesis, tears for fears, Metallica, to name a few.. " Disturbed’s voice is incredible. Especially sound of silence!
