My laptop just threw at me a whole pile of trojan warnings then locked me out..I can t turn it on again. It was an old laptop and only used for editing pics onto fb page....is it now toast? It said ring a number but I didn t as my mate did same thing and consequently that phone call led to the theft of his data.

Probably a premium rate number which based on the price originates from fucking Pluto! Another one of those scams BT ate totally powerless to stop! It's almost like they profit from premium rate numbers

Worst case scenario, your data has been encrypted and is being held hostage. Best case scenario its a scammer trying to scare you.

you have some options.

Keep it powered off and take it to a shop who can clean it for a quote - before Thursday I guess.

Or you’re fairly smart and have the time , power it on , but make sure it doesn’t connect to the internet and clean it yourself. But it can take ages , you will need a second computer and usb to download removal kits and may need to boot from USB if it’s badly infected, then you need to put the firewall and AV back up so much faster to just take it to someone who does it for a living , should be no more than £100

Remove the power lead AND the battery then reconnect them. But if 8 years old it’s probably not worth fixing but you might want to recover some data still

does it power on at all ?

any load screens ?

I dont mean does it try booting into an operating system

if you can get into bios

you can use an alternative way to save data via the usb socket

using a live usb operating system and another usb stick

but you wont have that as yur not aware of it but comes in so handy if you get a virus on your system its does allow you to save data

Boot it from a bootable Linux USB ( e.g Unbuntu ) That way you'd be able to access whatever data is there. After you've copied it off, reformat and reload whatever OS you want to use.
