Not a quote as such but my favourite opening sentence to a novel is from 'The Trial' by Kafka:

'Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., he knew he had done nothing wrong but, one morning, he was arrested.'

Stop sending people to kill me! We've already captured five of them, one of them with a bomb and another with a rifle... If you don't stop sending killers, I'll send a very fast working one to Moscow and I certainly won't have to send another.

The late, great Bon Scott of AC/DC had a great sense of humour. He was asked about the recording of a new album. He replied, when asked about a record producer, "As far as I am concerned, he'd be hard pushed to produce a fart!".

This comes to mind so often ....

It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When

you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay

too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you

bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The

common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a

lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well

to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will

have enough to pay for something better.

John Ruskin

As Philip II of Macedon was conquering Greek city-states left and right, Sparta was left alone. Philip had achieved a crushing victory, and Sparta was relatively weak and without walls. Philip sent a message to the Spartans saying “If I invade Lakonia you will be destroyed, never to rise again.” The Spartans replied with one word, “If.”
