"I'd have thought it could come under 'malicious gossip' View. If it can be proven to have been deliberate." agree Granny, mostly said without thinking thro the impact of once labelled, more difficult to shake it off

" Better still, do what we do here, hijack the inference and move onto something entirely different. "

"There is harm done. Harm to the accused but innocent. Informing authorities to save a child from potential harm is comendable BUT whispering to neighbours is not. THAT kind of stuff sticks. " thanks Granny, that is exactly what I tried to say x

"a friend of mine after a night out took a woman home, the next morning she cried rape, my friend was taken into custody until the trial, he lost his job and house, at the trial it very quickly became clear that she had done this before twice, his face all over the papers named and shamed, hers never known. he was cleared of any wrongdoing, but his life has been ruined. as for her, well no punishment at all, and her life carries on as normal. he was a very good friend, he has moved away and we havnt kept in touch alot, and i trust him, he told me it was her who instigated things not him!!!" Personally, i think the people who do this should get the same punishment that the accused could have got. A few years in chokey.

"Theres places to go with concerns regarding children. A neighbour or friends isn't one of them Get quite annoyed when folk have genuine concerns and don't act appropriately....far more fun to ruin someones life with malicious, unfounded gossip it seems "

"Personally, i think the people who do this should get the same punishment that the accused could have got. A few years in chokey." In principle I agree but it should never and will never be made law for one simple reason: genuine victims of crime would never come forward if a 'not guilty' verdict would result in them being sentenced themselves. Naming and shaming on the other hand is a whole different matter.

" Everybody has to be responsible for their action; we live ina s ociety where it does not take rocket science to work out that (untrue) allegations of this nature could seriously damage somebody's life - I am not sure how to resolve this but it should not be left ignored and the person who spread rumours in the first place should be held accountable. Then of course it depends on whether or not they acted on (misguided?) belief or out of malice?

"I don't think the consequence is important - the fact remains that because it was inferred, action was taken because it was deemed that there was a minor or minors at risk. Any potential risk would have been dealt with appropriately and the minors subsequently protected. If there was no risk then no harm done. Any resulting consequence whether there was actually someone at rick or not is immeterial, relax and be assured that you have done your moral duty." Try telling that to someone who is wrongly accused as happened up here a few yrs ago the man was tormented and had windows smashed etc until he got out of town in a hurry and as it turned out he was completely innocent. The consequences for him were very important and I would bet it has happened on more than one occasion, having said that if someone is definitely guilty then I wouldnt give a fig what happened to yhem.
