My laptop died a few days ago, I'm having to use the OH ancient steam driven excuse for a computer!

I only really use my laptop for fabbing, online banking, shopping etc.

I was thinking of being flash and upgrading to a tablet form.

I thought I'd ask you forumites for your opinions on them??

Do you want something that you can show off to others? Do you want a practical device? Can you wait a few months? All are important questions.

IF you can wait then hang fire for the new Microsoft tablet. If you can't then the Motorola zoom is good on price and quality for a 10" tablet and there are many budget android 4.0 tablets for around £100

Which explains why the poor old thing is so slow and knackered!! lol

Thanks for everyones advice so far.

Monty......in answer to your questions. No not bothered about anything to show off about, its more about something small, boots up quickly, and useful for the limited use i would have for it.

Im not in a great rush, and was wondering about Microsofts contribution to the market?

I maybe being old fashioned, but my main concerns about the tablets is not being able to upload a virus protection etc. And also for internet connection I wouldnt be able to use my dongle, and would need yet another mobile phone contract.

I'd recommend having a good second hand laptop right now, as I think the tablet marketplace is going to change, with more competition and better specs. Just now, it seems that there's a significant price hike over similar specs v. laptops.

Your tech requirements don't fall into high specifications, so a recent 2nd hand lappie would deliver the goods, be reliable and importantly deliver great value. If you had a need for massive computing power, then this would be a bit different, and if your needs change in a year or two, then if you've only invested £100/fairly near to this price or so now, you wouldn't have been paying out now for new equipment that would remain largely redundant until that time. It also means that the tablet market at that time, when competition and new tech. improvements, should deliver better specs at potentially equivalent or lower price levels.

It's easy to get carried away and buy much higher specifications than we need, realistically meaning that we're spending money right now that will somewhat be wasted. If you were doing intensive gaming, high intensity video editing and other stuff, then a higher spec'd piece of kit would be more appropriate. If you get a Windows 7 type refurb, then it will remain good, with Microsoft updates for a considerable period. Windows XP will only be supported by Msoft for just less than a couple of years, so if you want a supported operating system after that point, then XP wouldn't continue: it would still work, but wouldn't be given free updates from MSoft.

There are alternatives to Msoft systems, including free Linux options, and it's possible to have a laptop use more than just one, so even if you have an XP laptop, you could migrate to something like Linux after that point.

Just my thoughts, and I'd definitely good some reliable advice, where that isn't coming from someone trying to sell you something.

Good luck!

I use an Acer tablet, runs Android. Has virus protection on it, same as my laptop. Doesn't work with a dongle, so I just rely on free wifi networks when I'm out and about, most places have them now, Starbucks, Weatherspoons, even my local train company, so it's not a major issue. I can also tether my phone to it, and use the 3g connection to get net if I'm somewhere that doesn't have free wifi.

Problem is, tablets are a lot like phones. You can buy the best on the market, and 3 weeks later, it's out of date, and not top spec anymore.

Make a list of all the things you do with your laptop.

If you can find a tablet that you can do them all on, buy it.

Just ad addition to my comment earlier - if you get a 2nd hand laptop, ensure the supplier includes a warranty. Preferably with a windows copy/recovery disk, so that you can reinstall without issues.

The reputable suppliers will recondition them, with fresh windows operating system being installed. They're thus just town and go ready. I've used 2nd hand for a few years, and been very impressed and saved a ton of money. Obviously this is different to buying a used computer from somewhere like ebay, where there are no guarantees etc.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Especially sophie. It sounds like a second hand laptop is the better choice for me in the short term. Then see what new tablets are coming out.

I have both tablet and laptop, and while the tablet is ok for browsing, it can be infuriating trying to do anything practical with it. I'd stick with a laptop at present.

I have an iPad 1 and a mate has a Xoom and he says the iPad is more user friendly, I never use a computer at home now, iPad all the way and silver supporter to upload pics by mail! Easy peasy

If its just net use and fb, music, its all u need though they r expensive I think they r worth it!
