Genuinely interested in knowing what the Hell is this Sydney Uni thing all about?

Everywhere & Nowhere

It's an internet social experiment dating back to the early 2000s.

A person or group posted it to see if it would catch on. It did. Think fake news before it was given the label.

University of Sydney (USyd) have by all accounts never done any research studies using personal data harvested from the internet.

It's nearly as ridiculous as the other ones like "Facebook is now a publicly traded company" or the European court reference thing or some other tosh that folks post...

In short.... read the terms and conditions of the site, then assume that anything you post on the internet could make its way to the public domain.

Ironically, last I checked, the gender studies department of the University of Sydney had an excellent reputation for their research into masculinity (rather than the outdated notion of gender studies being mostly about women). In theory, Fab would actually be an interesting case study for that sort of specialism.

If I see that 'disclaimer' on a profile, it instantly tells me that this person is gullible and doesn't understand how the internet works.

This hoax started on Facebook in 2012 and for some reason refused to die.

Once you put a photo on a 3rd party website it is no longer your property.
