I need to buy a car, and I bloody hate buying cars.

Used, not too expensive (under 5k would be ideal, but I realise that's not much money!), but reliable and girlie too. Any ideas of makes and models? Help please, I suck at this!

Toyota if you want reliability an Aygo or Yaris. 5k could get you 2012 -2014 Yaris with less than 60k on the clock with reversing camera, Bluetooth and various other drivers aids.

I have the same budget (a little more if it was the right car) so it’s what I’ve been looking at.

Ago is great if you only drive around town. If you do any motorway driving, avoid them, they are rattly as hell and feel plastic.

I'd recommend a Corsa personally, love them, although I am driving an Astra at the minute.

Learner to drive in a VW polo and had great visibility. Then drive a Fiesta in UK. Drinking a Suzuki Swift Sport in NZ and love it but the low body kit is a pain for car parks that mean mounting kirbs and harsh speed bumps

Get a reliable mechanic to look at it...sometimes the cars owned by these teenagers are kept better than most others

Not sure if it's girly or not, but I would suggest a Corsa for a small car or Astra for something more family sized.

I have always found Vauxhall to be reliable and cheap to run. Parts aren't too expensive and are readily available.

I'm currently driving a 12 year old Astra twintop and love it.

If reliability is the standout feature Toyota Auris 1.4 diesel easily pick one up for that sort of money £30 a year road tax low insurance don't be swayed by Germans they're great brand new but they get old they expensive to fix and go wrong a lot this include seat and Skoda as essentially the same car.

Avoid Ford Fiestas and Focus with the 1.1 turbo Zetec engine as awful and also Astras and courses or just fall apart around you.

Fiat 500 should all be set on fire

A lot depends on what sort of mileage you intend to do which will will dictate the annual running costs.

I have recently bought for a friend a 2013 plate Fiat 500, 1 previous owner, full service history in mint condition but with 80K miles on the clock, 12 months M.O.T. 1 year road fund tax, 1 year all singing all dancing Breakdown cover along with 12 months fully comp insurance, Total cost £3395. as she only drives about 1200 miles a year I have no issues with the high mileage.

I'd look at Toyota too from a reliability perspective

I am on my 3rd and not had one problem with any of them

If you are just driving locally the Aygo or Yaris, if you do motorway miles then an Auris

Remember though, the hybrids cost more than the diesel or petrol equivalents - and cost more to service etc

I love my Citroen C3 - I looked at changing to either a C1 or an Aygo as no longer need a medium size car but I can’t do it. She’s 10 years old & keeps going with hardly any work needed.

I had a Fiat 500 as a courtesy car & found it really uncomfortable. My brother used to be a recovery driver & said Kia & Hyundai are the least recovered

Fiat 500 so bad that’s why so many about no doubt. I have 2004 Honda Civic Personally and it’s done 160K and just keeps passing it’s MOT every year with just minimal wear and tear replacement parts such as brake pads and the occasional bush. It’s not looked after and serviced but it just keeps going and everything works on it too still

I had a fiat 500 on contract hire for 3 years 0.9 105 Bhp version it was a hoot to drive and lots of fun the fiat 500 appeals to both sexes and there are lot of them to buy with lots of special editions out there to choose from I would not say it’s bad it’s the dealer you use as they maintain the cars you will find a good one or a bad one it’s how it’s been looked after if you look after it as things go wrong and don’t let them fester it will be reliable all day long it’s those who get a problem cat be arses to fix it then get a bigger issue and costs them twice or three times as much or goes to a garage who can’t fixes them tries to and it’s never the same car

So I think her best options are the 1.7 diesel i40 all the 1.4 diesel Toyota Auris both easy to drive cheap to run reliable and do not require constant maintenance.

What I am saying is that a fiat 500 is a great car to drive loads of character

And puts a smile on your face they only break if you don’t look after it

When was the last time you say somebody say hi I drive a Toyota and it’s fun lol have you driven a aygo it’s hardly exciting but then it depends what you want from a car and don’t forget Peugeot n Citroen have the same car and don’t forget Japanese cars parts are expensive if they do go wrong

You find the 105 bhp one then tell me I wanted an a bath but the suspension was to stiff for you roads as the panda 100bhp ps I used to own a lowered uno turbo that u felt every bump lol but good fun to drive on a fresh tarmac road

Nissan micra good for about town and ok on motorway. Have had 2 over the last 12 years never had a problem. Any car you get just make sure you get it serviced as that helps them to be reliable.

A lot on here are recommending VW’s... I’d suggest a Skoda, in particular a Fabia... Mechanically identical to a VW polo with a different body shell, but a fair few quid cheaper, and because of the unfair brand stigma highly unlikely to have been thrashed by a boy racer (unless it’s a VRS, but they’re not as cheap)

I had a couple of Abarth 595s in 2018 and 2019 and now have an Abarth 124. Absolutely love them but don't get the impression that they would be a good long term investment.

Thanks for all the ideas so far! You guys seem a little torn on the Fiat 500 lol. I'm looking for something comfortable and medium sized, not small and not sporty... I've done sporty and now I want to try comfort. Something 5 door with a decent back seat and cheap to run, but also pretty looking.

In an ideal world I'd find a hot pink jeep or Range Rover, but that isn't going to happen

. Kitty, for a safe bet get a ford focus 5 door hatchback, in titanium trim. Nice stereo, heated front seats, plenty of room in the back, decent boot, lots of cheap spare parts readily available if required. Get a nice one for £5K

Lol I don't know what choices you have in the UK. We do alot of off-road so I don't think the jeeps hubby and I have suit your purpose.

I was given a Fiat 500 as a courtesy car a few years ago. Look cute but are cramped and have little boot space.

I think minis are quite nice but overpriced.

German cars are bought in reliability and not looked after or the previous owner cheaps out on what get puts on it I’d you buy a German car usually buy form a mature person as he’s looked after it lol

Great advice! I second the fiat 500 thing, I love small cars but this was awful. I love suzuki.

At least 3 of the models are made in china I believe, I remember they have a high mileage club for older model owners and some are on huge mileages now.

Was lucky to go around the factory a couple of decades ago and play on the test track

Honda Civics are good. Hyundai i10/i20 if you want something smaller. Japanese cars are pretty good

ive got a range rover black not pink haha..best money ive ever spent..was only 8k..580 quid tax a year isnt nice tho

I'd consider a Jeep to be anything made by the brand Jeep. A jeep type vehicle (SUV) here is usually known as a 4x4.

Just buy a reliable, mid sized, comfortable, economical car. Spray it pink and add some fluffy car accessories. Sorted. Or just go with my previous suggestion.

I had the original scirocco GT coupe and test drove the mark 2 the other day, very different cars. 4 series is OK but prefer 3 or 5 GT or M Sport, same boot but 2 extra doors and a bit higher.
