So now the Higgs boson "god particle" discovery has happened, do you think its now come to pass that all organised religion should be seen as pure hokum??

No because they can still argue that god created the particle.

And whether you place your beliefs in science or religion... its pretty similar. Always changing... I mean look at when they thought you would sail off the edge of the earth.

This particle is just a step in the understanding of the nature of our universe. It is not an end, it is a beginning.

When we find another species that can change its environment, thats when I'll start listeing to the GUT (grand unified theories)scientists.

we know so little about ourselves, and what actually constitutes 'life' itself.

I actually dont need to search for the higgs boson article, I roughly know a decent amount about the feild to know that there is a extreme possibility that experiments proving or disproving 'god' are indeed a subject to quantum dynamics own paradoxicalism( i made that up) ,- the anthropic principle.(conscious observers creating their own universe(s))

Is it the 'god' particle tho? According to the press its a previously unknown particle! Which means no-one knows what the feck it is yet!

It could lead to us discovering about the 96% of the universe which we know feck all about, i.e. Black holes, dark matter!!

Maybe the other previous inhabitants of black holes also discovered there higgs bosun!

The argument is that God could not have created the particle as it implies that God would have had to have a creator to create him.

The Higgs particle is seen as the ultimate creator of all mass. It doesn't exist as a particle in itself but other particles are created by it and it is the 'glue' of the universe.

That's my rather limited understanding of it.

just further point about energy, or zero-point energy aas some may call it, giving u jesus as an example.

he died 2000 years ago, yet his energgy(in whatever way it has been conveyed), has affected much of the wod we live in, so from a quantum dynamics angle..his energy is alive and is still interacting with physical bodies, making changes to our very small existence every second.

thats where science and religion can live side by side, but the zealots between them would rather u believed one or the other.

*I'm not religious at all...existentially spiritual perhaps

While not religious myself (too much of a science mind) I would never criticise or judge those that do believe. Ultimately we all have some kind of construct and purpose - if we did not, most people would get quite depressed. So whether it is a traditional religion, ANY religion, or some other construct - it is part of human nature to believe in something. Even the atheist believes! Maslow's hierarchy of needs includes the need for some form of spirituality ...

I only quoted Maslow as one example of somebody who put the concept in words, I agree with you that many people dont even have the basic needs met and still believe in something - yet others do fall into that category of addressing their needs from the bottom up (no pun intended) just in the way Maslow describes.

but the speed of time slowed after the seven days...given relativity rules..maybe it was 7 days, but to us..it just appears like billions of years...

hehehehe I'm the devils advocate..

as for the statement about believing in tooth fairies etc...we are still a pretty materialistic species...after all..we use money to dictate our life..its probably actually one of natures greatest mysteries isnt it..money..it serves no real actual purpose but billions require it.

If all the knowledge contained in the universe could be represented by the amount of water in the worlds oceans I imagine that the total of man's factual knowlede is probably less than a thimble full, if that much.

Ok, I made that up, but my point is I choose to believe that we are still only scratching the surface and find any suggestion to the contrary to be a little arrogant.

We have a long way to go and a lot to learn, until we know it all (which I believe to be impossible) then there will always be theory, faith, belief and religion.

I agree, while humanity exists thats true. However, i tend not to think of ourselves as the beginning the middle and the end.

While our own species progresses, I'm one for believing another is approaching. One that will not require goldielocks living parameters.

AI

as we also search our own galaxy and others for 'intelligent life'- do we discount the fact that the reason we cant find it is because it wont show up on any life scales we use?-whether biological or machine. There is the possibility they will be our 'gods'...possibly more worrying..the possibility WE become their gods.

The Higgs Boson, is the particle which proves the existance of the Higgs Field. It is the particle responsible for Mass and so it is fairly important. It does give Physiciscts the glimer of hope that there will be a 'Grand Unified Theory' and that Quantum Mechanics will eventualy be shoehorned into a position where it will match with the more obvious Newtonian/Einstienian Model of the world (which don't match at all).......

No the existance of the Higgs Boson does not disprove the existance of God, any more than the discovery of Quarks, Electrons, Neutrons, Protons or Fire did............

You either believe in God or you don't. I suspect that I would never be able to convince you that my religious faith is valid or justified and you certainly wouldn't be able to convince me that it's not..........So long as neither sides evangelists get out of hand, I am sure we can all rub along nicely

"If all the knowledge contained in the universe could be represented by the amount of water in the worlds oceans I imagine that the total of man's factual knowlede is probably less than a thimble full, if that much.

We have existed for only a tiny fraction of Earth’s history. Earth itself is some 4.55 billion years old. The oldest fossils are about 3.5 billion years old. Dinosaurs existed 230-65 million years ago. The oldest known humanlike fossil is around 4.4 million years old.

Just to put things in perspective.

"I do not believe in God.

But I do realise my beleif is no more based on proof than those who do.

It seems faith is required on both sides."

that why im an agnostic, neither can really be proved (tho the foundations of many organised religions validity can be disproved, likr the forgery of christopherous in the catholic church) but at least the scientific method works towards a degree of provability, As Popper says nothing is true until it can be falsified,

thats why i made the Popper quote, you can no more disprove god than you can that fairies exist, which leads us to either a)believe purely based on faith c) disbelieve based on faith in non existance, and a possible alternate science based view of reality, which may itself be based upon a leap of faith or c)say sod it its unknowable and not worth obsessing over,(possibly prefering to concentrate on that which can be proven) I chose C).

especially as i have a strong knowledge on the history of organised religions and can pinpoint constant variations/corruptions in dogma that call virtually all organised religions into disreput. As they are all too often altered to the whims and desires of individuals.
