OK guys n girls, a 'sensible' question for you all

How long can you keep things in the freezer AFTER their use by date?

Going through everything today, and have things there that are 6 months out.

Safe to eat still of chuck away?

The dot in the i

It’ll depend what it is, mostly you’re better off throwing it away if it’s meat products but some small things can be kept like garlic butter ect

I ate a shepherd's pie on Wednesday that I put in the freezer at least 5 months ago. I bought it reduced and put in the freezer and I am not dead so I say go for it.

if it's fresh stuff you've frozen it should tell you on the packet.

So if it was chicken say, it'll tell you "if freezing consume within X months kinda thing"

Same as if you've frozen bread you know it went out of date a month ago but is fine for a few days once defrosted.

Frozen stuff that's gone out of date though, yeah I'd probably chuck it to be on the safe side.

Chances are safer than Covid so go for it

They'll be fine. Bacteria & fungals dont and cannot grow in a freezer. You can get 'freezer burn' but its nothing to be scared of.

If it is really deep frozen it will survive the 6 month or so, sometimes even longer depending on what it is. Taste will go down and be bland if you freeze food for too long.

Have a sniff when you take it out, if it smells funny you shouldn't eat it.

What is it tho? Was it fresh meat you then froze or frozen meat that's since gone out of date?

If it was fresh you then froze it will be fine, just do the normal thing of defrost and once defrosted cook within 24 hours

Some of it was frozen, some fresh.

Chicken breast, pork steaks etc...

Vegetables are OK still, but not gonna chance anything else.

Typical I never actually look what's in freezer before shopping usually, only looked today as I'm defrosting too

Wasted money... lesson learned as they say

In theory, indefinitely. It'll just taste shit past a certain point.

In practice most people don't have perfectly working freezers, now brownouts etc. So it's worth keeping on top of things - personally I try to make sure that all food I have is on the menu for the next two weeks, and I try to empty it for cleaning every six months.

In the catering trade it's good practice to discard anything frozen over 3 months old

I think it may effect the quality of the product as much as anything else. I would use it after it's 'frozen' date if it looked ok

I (Luke) have had fish that's been in the freezer for over a year. Rather than looking at a date you should look at it and smell it.

As kitten tamer pointed out, it's more to do with food quality. Try to just buy what you need and rotate everything, ie. Most in date stuff at the back, close to going out of date at the front to be used first

It depends what it is really. I was a chef for 15 years and although as Fuzz said, its good practice to not keep for for longer than 3 months, its not really the same at home. A whole chicken for example can be kept for up to a year. Pork chops inbetween 4-6 months whilst a full joint again anywhere up to 12 months. Raw steak is good for up to a year too. Fish is a funny one. Lean fish is ok for 6-8 moths but fatty fish is considerably less at 2-3 months. I hope this doesn't come across as rude.

I should know about food life, but its been a long time since I worked in that industry.
