Why do people get hung up about using this word?

Someone in another thread stated it would be a turn off, i’m curious as to why?

Wow you’re a professional when doing your job? Amazing. Most people are.

It’s just dull and boring. It screams ‘I have no positive qualities that would make you want to meet me, but I need to pad my profile text out’.

That’s fair, I dont think i’ve ever really considered it like that. I sort of assumed people might think it’s comes across as pretentious but not boring haha

coz it doesn't really mean anything.

Professional what?

Someone I knew who spent years and years on the dole and was proud of that fact used to call himself a professional giro technician.

Is my kid a professional writer? I mean, he got his pen license in year 2.

For me it's something that people think makes them sound good, when in reality, it just means "have job"

I don’t get it either!

I guess that the fundamentals of being a member of a professional body is that you’re are entrusted by the public (in chosen field) and so thereby it supposedly adds credibility to someone’s character? But every profession is plagued by rogues so is a redundant statement to me!!

Using professional in some cases, means that you are experienced and have rounded knowledge of a subject area. Eg I would use professional to describe my abilities as a Dom, as there are certain activities that if not done properly can be harmful.

Traditionally professional meant a job where a degree was required ie doctor or lawyer or a job that differentiates between amateur status ie football or tennis player where you actually get paid to do it

Never been sure why people use it wrongly or get upset about it? But in an age where you can get a degree in almost anything then it refers more to a profession where a membership to a national governing body is required such as charted accountant as opposed to someone who does accounts!

I know, I thought the same about the inverted snobbery earlier, glad it’s not just me, if someone’s had prolonged training and has a formal qualification and wants to meet similar then that’s their prerogative, this country still doesn’t like successful people who’ve worked hard and made something of themselves.

I've been here over a decade and "professional" seems to be a bête noire for some.

We're here to meet like minded people. Most of us realise we don't have universal appeal. Some however get annoyed if they're excluded in any way and lash out via threads like these...entitled much!

Jeez, it looks like 99% of people don’t seem to understand why people write “professional” on this site.

A professional is a person engaged or qualified in a profession. They can sign official documents such as drivers license photos etc. Accountants, doctors, surveyors, vets, lawyers. They are all professionals that have an insanely prudish governing body to answer to!

Just take 5 minutes and read up on this stuff. Did you know a they can pretty much all lose their membership of their respective profession for being on here? People have been kicked out for having watched porn on their work phone (2015), been caught having sex in public (2015,2016,2017,2019), had sex at work (2018), found to be living a lifestyle incompatible with the profession (2015,3016,2017,2018,2019).

Once you get kicked out, that’s it. A doctor that loses his membership can never work as a doctor again. Things are changing very slowly in this regard.

People put it down to potentially show:

A) Discretion is a must (100% of professionals won’t have face pics on here)

B) often a preference to meet others in this field as it gives them a sense of not being alone.

C) Education, often people want to connect on a personal level. They often look for repeat meets so want to click with that person/couple.

There are those that claim to be a “professional” and simply have a white collar job, they are the ones that cause the confusion. Politicians btw are not professionals, but are equally under scrutiny by the public to live a vanilla life.

Next time you think about them as being pretentious or beefing up their profile, please remember the above.

Now go and say hi to a professional.

PS: When someone puts down “require discretion”, people raise the same statement of “most people want discretion” and saying they are just being dicks. There is a difference between losing a job as an office worker and joining another firm to get a job, and losing the ability to work in a type of job you’ve practiced over a decade for with no ability to ever do this type of work again unless you leave the country...

But we all know professional in that sense has about as much credence as the Sydney Uni bullshit warning on here.

The most the majority of "professionals" on here can sign is their own name in spunk across their pillow.

It holds about the same water as "single" or "straight"

Thanks for doing the legwork for me People have many reasons for describing themselves as professionals on here. Sure, some people use it to sound fancy, or because they consider themselves a cut above, but there are also many valid reasons for including it in your profile. I've never understood why some people get so riled up by it. If it offends you, then those people probably aren't right for you

"It can be a privacy/discretion thing. For some jobs being publicly identified as a swinger could threaten job security. Xx

This is exactly the reason I use it on my profile. I say ‘professional’ in the sense that I have a degree and I’m registered with a professional body who wouldn’t take it lightly if they found out about this part of my personal life. It’s pretty much a given that i’d get sacked for putting the ‘profession in disrepute’ haha so you could get the sack because of what you get up to in you’re private life ? It’s not illegal to be on fab and surely no company would dare sack an employee because of this "

They likelihood is yes they would probably sack me, like I say my registration is controlled by an external ‘professional body’ who set out rules and standards. If I don't meet those then i’d be struck off

If you post certain types of pictures on the net it can make your position in certain professions very difficult if they're discovered. Swinging as such isn't going to be grounds for dismissal but what surrounds it and people's reactions to it can make life difficult.

It won't be for your private life exactly - it will usually be to do with bringing your profession into disrepute.

Yeah, they don’t state ‘you can’t be a swinger’ but there is lots of policy’s about the use of social media, upholding the image of the profession, codes of ‘professionalism’ etc. I know of a woman in a similar profession to mine who was sacked for promoting her only fans on twitter, it’s just the way it is

Yes, they do. Especially if they're real NHS uniforms. Police officers, members of the armed forces shouldn't show uniformed photos either particularly with identifying features, teachers etc should all be careful about mentioning their jobs too

As much as its up to each of us what we do on here, I was very surprised by all that. I've seen nurses criticised for wearing their uniform to the supermarket, nevermind on here. Older nurses remember not even being allowed to wear their uniform to and from work.

I should point out that is my perspective opinion.

My family members who are nurses aren't allowed to wear their uniforms to and from work due to covid. I also have family members in the met who aren't allowed to wear their uniforms to and from work for very different reasons

Have no problems with it people want to say there in professional jobs they tend to carry themselves with a little more reserved respect that's fine but never put us off.

I made a good living representing people who thought that. Some employers have morality clauses, so pictures of you being spit roasted on an altar when your employer is the church is grounds for dismissal.

I'm not in a professional job but my job contract states I could be sacked for bringing the company into disrepute. Covers social media use, anything online.
