ALSO RAN???????

4th best player in the world.. was no 2 for a spell

22 ATP tour titles.

3 times grand slam finalist.

He has beaten all the top players around him in major tour events.

just because he aint won a slam yet doesnt make him an also ran...

if you were th 4th best person IN THE WoRLD at anything you did, woudl you be happy if people called you an also ran???

really annoys me how people can knock someone regarded by his peers as a world class player...

and no i am not Scottish. i am British and he is British in my eyes, win or lose..

so what is something of note????

like 22 ATP tour titles beating most of the top players on the way....

its like saying jimmy white was a shit snooker payer cos he never won the world title or stirling moss was a shit racing driver cos he never won the world title.

some of you people obviously dont follow the tennis other than 2 weeks at wimbledon and then slag him off if dont win it

like it or not, he is a world class player and regarded as such by the people that matter... his fellow players.

he may not win wimbledon, he may never win a slam but it doesnt make him a shit player....

he is capable of winning one and if he does i think he will go on to win others. he has a top class coach now with experience of winning grand slams and he will be the difference.

He's had it easy so far, but he's going to face some serious players from this point on. Ferrer is next and it won't be as easy for Murray to win that match 3 sets to love.

His best surface is the hard courts and his best chance of winning it the US , wish I was the 4th best player in the world at something .

He has lost 3 grandslam finals, his coach Ivan Lendl lost his 1st 4 and went on to not have too bad a career

Don't judge his press inter_iews as hi personality , Steve Davis was considered to be a dour bore but when he started going on tv programmes his true personality came out .

We should be proud to have someone to support

hoo bloody ray someone who actually seems to know something about the game....

he may never win wimbledon cos it aint his best surface. he wont win the french cos he doesnt like clay. if he wins it will be the US or the Australian cos they are hard courts, by far his best surface.

hip hip hooray another one who seems to know what he is talking about....

lendl was 24 before he won one and so was federer.

i really hope when he does win one he sticks 2 fingers up at the detractors and tells them to F**k off.

Yes he is number 4, yes he has won over 20 ATP tour titles, so has Davydenko, the guy he beat in the first round. He may be considered a top class player and also a whinger by his peers. Andy does not have the guile to win a grand slam. He will remain mediocre by winning all those ATP tour titles, but he will never be considered great. Why is it that some folks like to settle for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. That's the problem with our sporting athletes and we supporters.

2 years ago everyone was saying the exact same things about Djokavic , how he was happy to be 3/4 best and Rafa and Federer where always going to be ahead of him and now look.

Let's see if lendl can implement his changes and where Murray is in 2yr time

mediocre????

to be frank thats about as big an insult as you can place on anyone who is a top 5 sportsman in the world in any sport...

why is it, if people dont like someone for whatever reason they slag them off and calim they are shit at what they do.

i hate Cristiano Ronaldo with a passion , because i think he is a cheating whinging little prick, but i would never doubt his football ability cos he is clearly a class player.

dont mix up personality with ability.

ok, murray comes over as dull as dishwater in inter_iews but dont knock his ability to play tennis.

anyway davydenko was 22 before he won a tour title, murray was 19. dayydenko is 6 years older and has never reached a slam final..

people dont settle for being 2nd 3rd or 4th but some dont come our with inane comments calling them also rans and mediocre either if they dont win everything...

He is the best player to come from these Isles EVER.

Just unfortunate timing with his rivals....a bit like snooker at the time of steve davis and hendry or boxing at the time of Ali .

"He aint gonna win Wimledon...simplzzzz!"

it would be interesting to know why you come to that conclusion.. when pretty much all the tennis fraternity, ie the experts all seem to think he is capable of it.....!!!

why are people so adamant he wont???

he now has a top coach with grand slam experience so why cant he win it????

all the top players are dropping sets this year so not one of them is unbeatable...

many people thought that about steve davis and stephen hendry....till turned out to be the best players in the world...

as i have said in previous posts dont confuse personality with abilty.

there have been some real dullards and knobheads in sport and some of the greatest sportsmen too..

To get the public to support you ....you have to court them to a certain extent....now I'm not a great tennis fan tbh but I am aware of the difference between ability and personality. But I think he's obnoxious.....petulant and still think he's a huge knob. So you can argue the toss about him winning this n winning that....he's disrespectful...and my opinion of him will never change...he could set his balls alight and I still wouldn't be impressed

So what if he comes across as a bit dull in his inter_iews! He is one of the best players to come out of britian! And our ONLY hope of a wimbledon win just now with the players we have coming thru the ranks!!

Wasn't his dig at the press something to do with the fact that when he won a tournament he was british, but when he lost he was scottish?

(maybe i'm wrong), but his comment was totally taken out of context at the time!!

Great player its not his fault the media has had a love hate relationship with him they just arent happy that hes not tim nice but dim henman (god now he was boring)

they also creamed him back when he was a naive teenager unused to the media , back then he was more ebuliant and open so they asked him who he wanted to win the world cup and he said jokingly anyone but england, so they stoked up a hate campaign saying he was anti english,

A year or too later they tried again to gurd him on by asking if he still hated the english , his answer " my girlfriends english, my best friends engish and my training partners are english what do you think" hed learnt his lesson british media can treat its own like shit so be careful what you say .

not only is he not going to win wimbledon he is never going to win a grandslam, you could give him another 10 years. i went to paddy power to ask what price will they give me for him not to win a a grandslam within the next 10 years and it was 5/1. the bookies must know something by giving that price. if they had belief that he would win a grandslam within that time the price would be much higher.

"So what if he comes across as a bit dull in his inter_iews!

He is FA to do with us down here you keep Murry he has a bad attitude and really don't want him associated with the rest of Britain. Keep the donkey up there and give us a break down here from his ugly mug. "

whether you liek it or not. he is scottish and scotland is a region of britain therefore he is british....

we should be supporting british players regardless of whether they are scot welsh or N Irish..

such as

Chris Hoy

Rory Macilroy

etc. they dont get the stick that Murray gets...

Great player its not his fault the media has had a love hate relationship with him they just arent happy that hes not tim nice but dim henman (god now he was boring)

People have long memories and it doesn't make him any less of a dick. The only reason he is saying different is due to him loosing millions in potential sponsoring and advertising. The fact is the biggest part of England dont want him, they don't want his face on advertising or much to do with him. Tainted goods via his own tongue so you keep him preferably chained to a wall up there some place.

ok ok you win...

its obvoius thatyou know more about tennis and murrays ability than:-

john mcenroe

boris becker

roger federer

rafa nadal

novak djokavic

john lloyd

martina navratilova

tracy austin

pat cash.

etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

who incidently, collectively know a little bit about the game and all say he is capable of winning a slam...

if you are so confident in Paddy Power i assume you have remortgagaed your house and scraped every penny you can to put a bet on. at 5 to 1 its still alot to win.....

no??? why ever not...

The odds have little to do with the possibility of winning the bookies know mugs up there will bet on him what ever the odds so they won't give accurate ones.

He's not a rangers supporter, he had trials for rangers as a teenager, he actually supports Hibernian.

Still doubt he'll win it, Djokovic looks unstoppable.

I really wish people would find out the full story before they make comments , another urban legend of a story , it belongs up there with Ali throwing his gold medal in the river and Ian Rush saying living in Italy was like living in a different country , all good stories but no truth I'm any of them .

Fred Perry was, like a lot of other sportsmen ,unquestionably the best in their era but with fitness levels new equipment training and coaching methods he could not live with current top 10 ranked players.

he once made a flippant immature comment a long time ago now when he was bout 19 about the england football team. since then nothing...

the press and the scotophiles just keep going on and on and on and on about this one incident and make it seem like he is a english hater.

hero worship???? i dont worship him i actually think he is a miserable git in inter_iews...

what really pisses me off is people coming out with comments like 'also ran' 'mediocre' 'loser' 'average' 'quitter' and 'he clearly wont win anything'

when he is quite obviously a world class tennis player. you dont get to be 4th in the world at anything without being world class.

I follow tennis globally, not just for 2 weeks at wimbledon, and some of the comments that people say are frankly ridiculous and it just annoys me because people see personality, or lack of it, as a sign of a lack of abilty which it clearly isnt..

and as to 'if he doesnt win anything soon' comment, well

do 22 ATP titles not mean anything to people??? do you actually realise that he has beaten every top ten player in the world on his way to these titles at some time or other.

he just needs to get over the line and win his first... Fed was 24 before he won his first. Lendl was 24 and had lost 3 finals before that and went on to win 7.

just put personal prejudices behind you and look at the facts..

there may be a lot of hats and humble pie eaten one day and i shall be there to provide the condiments.....

Yes but after a few nationality changes along the way......the SCOT lost the first set only for the british number one to win the second. Then the scot struggled with tie breakers until the fantastic british semi finalist won the day.

You meaning who? im from the south coast of england but i still think he has a damn sight more personality that henman, he was a boring middle class twat, Murray may never win a major( suspect tho i suspect he will) and he may be serious but thats also partly because hes driven and focussed (ok maybe the dour scotsman bit is also true) but he actually has a good sense of fun and a sense o humour and the fact that he is still being punished for a teenage quip 6 years ago something no worse than anyother teenager would say is ridiculous.

Kenny I'm with you all the way but I must pick you up on the immature comment about the English , he never once said a bad thing about the English , I've heard it from the journalist that was inter_iewing him , what happened was the journo was ribbing him about Scotland not making the world cup and asking what he and Scottish people was going to be doing whilst everyone was watching the football ? To which Murray joked(see he does make them) I'll be sitting in my Paraguay shirt !

That was the whole episode and since then it's oh Murray wanted to wear a Paraguay shirt .

I reall hope he wins his semi, going to be the toughest of finals but some of us live in hope

yeah i know its the press winding people up. i heard he was asked who he wanted to win and he said anyone except england, but then i never saw it and only go from what the press have said, but as you say its all bullshit anyway.

people have very narrow minds and believe anything the press whip up..

to them, he is scottish when he loses and british when he wins..

to me he is a brit and we should support him, in the same way as i support a number of non english, but british sportsmen and women...

he is the best we have had since fred perry and we should be proud of that. he is representing GB in the olympics but no doubt the scotophiles will love to see him lose in the first rounds...

ok he may not win this week, but by god if he does, i am gonna be excpecting some people to eat some huge portions of humble pie.

The press have hijacked every decent sportsman/woman over decades if not centuries and labelled them as British up until they are beaten or disgraced and then they are quickly back to being from whatever nation they actually come from, be that Irish, northern Irish, scottish, welsh or even Canadian! It's entirely predictable, we have all seen it, star/sun headline "Brit _____ wins" and as soon at the person is defeated it's "Scot/welsh etc ace crashes out" . At this stage I expect nothing less from the press but unfortunately some commentators like to buy into this practice. It's quite sickening, petty and childish.

Now the argument that Murray is world class is a bit of a smoke screen. What does work class truly mean? Well it means nothing. It's a phrase developed by commentators and the press to make someone who is not great sound great. There is no qualifying criteria to being "world class", just the opinion of press and commentators( generally biased due to work commitments) to try to lift the spirits of the non great player.

And when I hear the argument that he is around in a time with three great players, well that's a lame ass excuse! Andy should be honoured to be around during the reign of three great players as he is not great and the association will keep him in people's memories for the being the man in the shadow of or the also ran, whatever way you want to phrase it. It's very similar to the Richard Johnson / Tony McCoy argument that if McCoy wasn't around , Johnson would be top jockey for so many year......bla bla bla and if my granny had bollocks she'd be me grandad!

All that said, I did make a few quid from Andys win yesterday but I will be keeping it in my pocket now as I don't see him getting any further. I do wish the Scot all the best though

granted, world class is just an expresion but not necessarily coined by commentators but also by experts in teh sport , like fellow players, coaches etc.

but how can anyone call a sportsman like murray an 'also ran'

Is Roger Federer the best tennis player of his era?? many experts would so so yes...

so does a man who has a better head to head against him by 8 to 7, be classed as an also ran??

of course not.

every one judges this by grand slam wins.

winning a slam is a very fine line, it is more about mental attitude than physical ability beacause murray has beaten all of the top players so therefore has the ability to do it.

He just needs to cross the line mentally and i think Lendl could well be the man to take him there.

i may be wrong, i always thought jimmy white would win a world title, but he didnt, purely down to mental attitude as he was _iewed by his peers as one of the greatest players.

i personally think from watchin tennis globally now for 25 years, that Murray has the ability to win a GS and i shall be proud to be British supporting a British player.

still think, with the way fed played earlier, he hasnt a hope in the final.

very true, murray seems to have come on leaps and bounds since hes taken up lendl to help with the psychological side of the game!

John Mac sums it up best, he's not won anything yet so why be over joyful ?!

I'll give it to him, he's certainly playing out of his skin. Maybe he has come of age finally. On his performance so far we'll be seeing more of him in Wimbledon finals.

Not if Murray wins the second set. Federer will have to win three on the bounce to take it, and he won't do that the way Murray is playing at the moment.

Federer's back hand is suspect today and he's going long on a lot of shots.

"All going wrong .. no.surprise !!"

Federer will take this fourth set - and the match - too, he's absolutely on fire and Murray's rattled.
