I am on a waiting list for some hip surgery. In the meantime my GP has prescribed me tramadol. I feel really woozy and trippy when I take them anybody else had similar effects?

Tramadol is a class A drug and can be very addictive, only use if in really bad pain ,you can take paracetamol with it as well ,it can make you drowsy and spaced out and even faint to start with ,they will pass if taken regular, just be careful on them

I was on Tramadol for about a month after hernia surgery, wasn't given any tapering off advice when it ran out so had a couple of uncomfortable withdrawal days!

Had a complete breakdown. Stuttered when I spoke, twitched constantly, anxiety attacks, short term memory loss, could barely read as couldn’t compute what I was seeing. I don’t remember much of the year at all.

I was on Codeine for a few years, but ended up taking them like Smarties. Doc put me on Tramadol which is obviously a more effective painkiller, but as has been mentioned it makes me drowsy and sometimes even if I drop off in ma recliner for an hour or so, it's not really proper sleep

I take pregabalin for nerve pain, all it does is take the very edge off it but I function. Its the only kind of pain that I can't easily tolerate

I had surgery for a prolapsed disk, before I had the op I was on a lot if different meds... I found that the first couple of times the meds knocked me for six, but didn't help the pain, just took my mind off it (simular too being d*unk, too a degree - you still feel it, but you don't care! ). As long as you find relief for the time being accept it for what it is, I hated the side effects!

My disc went when I was 7 months pregnant, full nerve root compression. I wasn't allowed any pain killers due to being in the third trimester. Oh! The memories! I'm laughing, 'else I'd cry

I was on Pregabalin Carbomazapene and Tremadol for my Trigeminal neuralgia. Got to a point I couldn’t function as any form of normal.

Saw a herbalist and tried a few different remedies.

Found one that takes the edge off the pain. And finally off the Meds. After two years.

Evil things them Meds !!!

I spent a month and a half living in bed whilst my belly got bigger and I became less and less able to stand or walk. I ate lying on my right side because I couldn't sit at all. I then gave birth to the baby without any pain relief too

Unfortunately, a combo of the long nerve root compression plus other nerve injuries from the pregnancy has left me permanently disabled. No-one believed it was a disc compressing anything whilst I was pregnant - they fobbed me off with pelvic girdle dysfunction. The disc blew on 16th Dec. They didn't MRI till after the birth on about 7th Feb and then I didn't see a spinal specialist till sometime in late March. But I'm still here.

Strangely enough, I was suffering daily with pain even on meds (fentanyl) until one day I forgot to change my patch, then as an experiment with/to myself I thought 'howlong can I last without the patch...' 6 months on and I'm doing better than I have done in the past 10 years!

So in essence, I agree... stay off them if you can...

OMG Those things are the devil. I had cold sweats sickness and slept for hours and I only took 1. I never took anymore and returned them. I had an injury a few years later and had same effects forgot it was those id taken. Never again

I was prescribed Tramadol and Amitriptyline for a back and cruciate ligament injury. I took 1 x 10mg amitriptyline and hallucinated for 24 hrs but couldn't sleep. Never took another.

Tramadol was lovely for 30 mins - like having several gins, I'd sleep for exactly 4 hours and then be awake and in agony all night. I stopped taking it within a week or so when I realised that I liked the feeling in the first 30 mins a bit too much and was like a zombie. It is VERY addictive.

Now if my back goes I take 15mg of codeine with 2 paracetamol and it takes the edge off enough to get me to sleep. 30mg makes me sick though.

I'm a bit rubbish with most painkillers and gave birth after a 60 hour labour with no pain relief!

Good luck with your pain OP - the best relief I've found is acupuncture or osteopathy depending on the injury/ cause.

I’d rather put up with the pain I was prescribed cocodamol for pain and it was awful trying to stop taking them I’d never take a painkiller again and I think tramadol are more addictive you’re gp will tell you all about it as I was but I found it very hard to stop them to the point once my gp no longer prescribed them I ended up buying them over the counter which led to me being addicted to them took me a long time to ween myself of them with help from my gp

Tramadol makes me a space cadet, hate the stuff, ask your good about amitriptyline it's a muscle relaxer not a pain killer but it works for restless legs and joint pain too. Hope this helps x

Have been on various painkillers for 20 years since I turned my shins into gravel and also got compartment syndrome and sepsis afterwards. After the long hospital stays with a morphine button I was discharged with the following to try and manage the pain.

Started on amitriptyline which made me incredibly tired the morning after so much so I couldn’t function off work. Binned that.

Tramadol made me feel like a zombie so gave up on that straight away. Have heard horror stories about them to be honest.

Now bounce between pregab and Gabapentin depending on tolerance.

Have had Botox injections into my shin compartments a couple of times recently which helped but not a long term solution.

I used to get tramadol for migraines, but I only took it like 3 times? It made me all spaced out, but not sleepy. I hated the way it made me feel and actively preferred the migraine.

I can't comment about tramadol but I've had a kidney stone recently and the doc at the hospital perscribed cocodemol and naproxen. The naproxen didn't touch it and the cocodemol was effective for about 3 hours - the first two i was drowsy and zombie like and the third hour i still couldn't feel pain but was slurring my words like I was d*unk, then just heading into the hour before I could take another, the pain seared back.

After four days I needed to bring myself off the cocodemol as it was affecting my functioning at home. I reverted to paracetemol on my docs advice.

It was just pain management meds that they gave me.

I only took that for three days as it had zero effect.To be fair the stone was still in my system for almost 5 days and when I chatted to my own doc she also got me on some antibiotics which really got to work as i'd also develped an infection by this time.

Thankfully I'm now back to what passes as normal

Stuff like naproxen is usually aimed at pain due to inflammation, like arthritis, joint disease, post op pain etc. It can also play havoc with your digestive system and should be taken with a PPI like omeprazole or similar. Just a very odd choice for relief from pain such as that from a kidney stone. Glad you're on the mend

Thank you, it's a really interesting thread with a lot of different experiences listed. I'm really glad that I read through as it means I can now ask a bit more info about things if necessary in the future.

No worries, I've unfortunately had to acquaint myself with pretty much every painkiller known to the NHS. The only ones I've not taken at some point are the likes of ketamine.
