Music - right in the gut

Manchester (she/her)

I don't know if anyone else ever had this problem, growing up. You'd hear a song on the radio. But repeatedly miss the bit where they told you what it was.

Music prediction is getting scarily good, and one by one they filter into my awareness.

A few years ago I finally tracked down, and bought, Belinda Carlisle Summer Rain.

A song I didn't recognise came up on Youtube Music. I let it play.

... big, ugly gasp. *That song* Flood of memories. I haven't heard it since my teens.

Richard Marx - Hazard.

If you haven't heard Hazard for years you clearly haven't ever listened to Steve Wright In The Afternoon on Radio 2 - he plays it often

I have as most a handful that take me straight to a time and place or person. Of that handful a couple that can be almost crippling emotionally.

Music/Art are incredibly powerful.x

Right now I've got almost an emotional flashback. Got me by the damn throat.

Fuck.

You forget who you were...

I guess it depends in what context the memories are .

If I hear one of the songs played at my Mums funeral for example then its not happy tears .

But I have plenty of tunes that bring back floods of good emotions

We forget so much....sometimes going back is amazing....others it hurts.

It’s when it catches us unawares!

I've overcome. I'm not where I was.

The girl I was when I last heard that song would not recognise me. She'd be afraid of me.

It's bittersweet.

I cry for the girl I was. I'd rescue her if I could.

... Although. I did, eventually.

I have a whole list of songs for certain mindsets.

when i think of powerful music most of it can be tied into movies.

like carlito's way when he is being placed on the stretcher at the end of the movie.

things like that.

I never even saw the damn movie but something about Leanne Rimes Can't Fight the Moonlight (Coyote Ugly) gripped me at the time. It's interesting listening to it now, having dealt with some of that stuff.

another one was saving private ryan when the camera panned out across the beach and all the bodies and blood in the water.

the music was spot on with the emotion and brutality of the situation.

That’s really good to hear.

Our journeys are unique and sometimes we don’t even realise we started them.

I too am a much different woman to who I used to be. I’ve grown so much in so many different ways. Stronger than ever, yet starting to learn that just maybe there’s another way forward.

I got upset a few months ages ago when I was listening to The Best of You by Foo Fighters. Had the live disc on while cleaning and I was singing along and then this hit me stronger and weirder way than it ever did before or since. Maybe just having a low day.
