Any experiences please?

Good or bad. I’ve read that it can cause some horrible side effects such as depression or anxiety.

I've had mine four and a bit years now. Reduced my periods and made them more regular. No side effects. Still there. Very happy, want another one if they won't pursue more radical measures

I had mild period pain type cramps for about 3 months afterwards, but that's not common.

Only small thing was I had vwe partners saying they could feel the string.

Not a big deal though.

I had the equivalent of bad cramps for 48 hours when it was inserted. That's common but no big deal

Devil here. I have Mirena coil, and it was the best decision ever. I did bleed (more spotted than actual heavy bleed) for about 2 weeks after insertion but that's it. Occasional spotting at times but nothing else.

I have been told by one of my previous partners that he could feel the coil (I guess he meant the string) during sex and he didn't like it. Nobody else complained though, and the coil works really well for me, with no side effects noticed. I had it just over 4 years now.

I've had mine in for a couple of years and not looked back, best thing I ever did... A couple of days of cramps afterwards, My periods are now next to nothing compared to ridiculously heavy before.

I'd tried every sort of contraception before and this is the best I've had so far!

I haven’t got one but know a lot about it. The advise about shorter strings is actually the worse thing that you can do as that makes them spiky. Longer strings soften and mold against the vaginal walls so in time they will be better.

The hormones are a lot less than in pills as they are concentrated in the cervix and therefore generally less hormonal issues with them.

Some people just do not suit IUS or IUDs but a large % of woman its the best thing for them especially for period control

I had one after last child born at 42! Never had a period since! Went through the change without realizing not sure that was luck or anything to do with it and as I was that age they said no need to replace after 5 years so was left in! That said after 16 years and numerous blader/kidney infections I decided to ask for it out as no need for it anyway and the infections stopped! Not sure if it was the coil that caused that or undiagnosed diabetes?? But would otherwise say it was no problem at all for the first 14 years x

I've had mine for 2 years now, and nothing is really different from being contraception free apart from no bleeding - I still get PMT, cramps and bloating, but I only get very light spotting if I bleed at all.

A little uncomfortable going in and ive yet to have it replaced but have heard its quite uncomfortable but in all honesty I think its been worth it.

I enquired about this and my nurse said that a big willy will always feel the string no matter now short it is.

Coming out it just feels really strange. The feeling kind of goes through you but it's 100 times easier than getting it put in.

I had it done to try to stop horrendous heavy bleeds, now I have next to none, it's great, no other side effects I can see, I've put on weight but that's more likely down to my age, and drinking too much and exercising too little

does anyone have migraines and have a coil? i manage my headaches by tricycling my pill to keep my hormone level steady and only really get headaches now when i very occasionally have a period ... due to my age the keep trying to get me to switch to a coil but the thought of going back to monthly hormonal migraines terrifies me do i keep refusing

Never used a coil, just did not like the idea of it and just did not want to pump my body full of hormones either.

Ended up having the Essure sterilisation procedure. Best decision ever.

There is no guarantee. Only 40% of my pregnancies have actually followed unprotected sex.

I fell pregnant twice with the Mirena coil in. And the other times I was on the pill.

So no, there's no guarantee. But that doesn't mean a woman will have children even if she becomes pregnant.

I’m on my second one, well it’s nearly at the end of its life as they last around 5 years, never had a problem and it helped so much with heavy periods by taking them down to light spotting then stopping them altogether, also sailing through the menopause as my arcing stopped all the hot flushes and night sweats

i feel your pain ... id have been sterilised when i got my first period if they would have let me but despite not even a slight waver in my mindset 20 years later i apparently dont know what i want

and while other people are entitled to enjoy their kids planned or not its quite frankly insulting to suggest that cause they were the making of someone else that my experience would be in any way comparable

I've been clear, articulate, and unwavering for 15+ years. All of those years were in adulthood. But apparently I'm an adult except for my knowledge of what I want in terms of reproduction.

i also know a number of friends who were desperate for kids and far from being the making of them it was what started the unravel

only reason I didn't get it replaced was because it did cause a tiny bit of discomfort when I had something BIG in me.

My right ovary is already scarred to fuck and my uterus hates me but I can't even get more than hormonal treatment because they're more concerned with retaining my ability to have children I don't want to have than they are with my quality of life.

On another site women were told they couldn’t have the coil out, or persuaded not to.

On here, ladies have been told they don’t know their own mind around having kids - ffs!

When we had our 4th I went to the doctor and asked for the snip. He tried his dammed hardest to talk me out of it, I had to see a surgeon beforehand, who again suggested I shouldn’t do it and had my wife considered doing something for herself!!!!!

I told him I was past wanting kids 4 was enough and if he didn’t agree I’d pay abroad for it doing. He finally agreed.

What pee’d me off more was that two male doctors tried their hardest to change my mind and tried to get me to talk my wife into some other method, even though we’d discussed it and were happy. That was 8 years ago, I’m still not wanting anymore kids.

So I agree it’s almost as though it’s only women who are responsible in the eyes of the medical community.

In one case this resulted in withholding medical care, and I should have died.

Because I offended him by being honest when he asked when I planned to have children.

If you keep the coil in for six months, your gp practice gets paid thousands! That is why they try to stop you having it taken out.

I told them to take mine out after three months as the bleeding and pain was worse than my periods.

I warned them that if they didnt, I'd attempt it myself and probably end up in a&e and it would be their fault.

Doctors are fucking useless when it comes to women, their choices and their bodies. It's a mans world!

"What amazes me about this, and another faire I read up on this, is the lack of autonomy women have over their own bodies!

On another site women were told they couldn’t have the coil out, or persuaded not to.

On here, ladies have been told they don’t know their own mind around having kids - ffs! "

This is one of the reasons I won’t have it fitted, amongst others, although they try to persuade me every visit

Just jumping in here because I had my first coil fitted yesterday morning. I got some bad cramping for the rest of the day and now just niggly pains. I saw my partner today and he said he never even noticed the string bit because he was too involved with what he was doing

I'm on my third, it's been fine periods all but stopped or if I do get one they're light and short, no weight gain or mood issues, it's perfect for me as I can't have fully hormonal contraception and I'm naff at taking the pill and no more babies are wanted here, but I can't be doing with the arguement of having to try and fight to be sterilised with my GP (truthfully I'd like the lot gone due to my gynae issues)

Not tried the coil, but tried a lot of others. Now on Sayana press, where you inject yourself every 13 weeks, no side effects for me and doesn't hurt

Ugh never again. But saying that I am the kind of person who doesn't cope well with surges of hormones. This made me emotionally unstable, bloated, snappy and grumpy all the time and I felt ill

Would highly recommend it. I got my first one in 8 years ago to help stop 18 months of solid bleeding. They did an ablation on my womb and inserted the coil while I was knocked out. If it didn’t stop the bleeding, my only other choice was hysterectomy. Thankfully it worked, am just over halfway through my second one.

Taking it out was uncomfortable as the strings had embedded themselves so it was like plucking out an ingrown hair, but the reinsertion I didn’t even feel.

I had one - it was horrible. I turned into this ball of sheer rage.

After about 6 weeks I went back to the clinic and wouldn’t leave until they’d taken it out

I honestly think if they hadn’t I’d have physically harmed either my (then) husband or my kids.

I had it for 5 years and it did an amazing job as a contraceptive, as it killed my libido completely... my husband also always complained of the threads poking him, lol.

Never again.

I am undergoing some gynae treatment at present and my consultant suggested a Mirena to try and control heavy periods. Nah, not happening. The benefits don’t outweigh the risks. Plus my periods never diminished/went away when I had it.

But some other women have had positive experiences with it.

I had mine fitted at the start of August. Three weeks in I had an awful intense hormonal episode (not in my cycle where you’d expect it, it was a week after my period). I had a huge rage and went to bed plotting how I could run away without being found. Next morning I started crying at 5.30am and couldn’t stop all morning, only other time I remember feeling that bad was when my post natal depression was at its peak. I phoned and got them to agree to remove it the following day, but it passed as quickly as it started so I cancelled the appointment. Been fine since but am losing more hair than usual, which I wonder if it’s down to the coil.

On the plus side, the effect on my periods has been fantastic, I couldn’t even leave the house for a couple of days previously, they’re so much better now

It also made me gain about 3-4 stone in weight. As soon as it was out I lost all the weight. (obviously diet, exercise, etc). I’ve been able to keep my weight for the last 4 years....

Devil here again. I posted on this thread previously, and now there is an update. I had my coil replaced (eventually, nearly 3 months after it was supposed to be replaced- Covid crap!) a week ago today. I did have some light spotting and some cramping for a couple of days but all seems good now.

Sorry for reviving this thread, I'm on my 3rd coil now, first 2 were amazing, this one has caused me a few infections, but tonight I've gone to toilet and I'm bleeding, felt for the strings and they are really low, I have a feeling its falling out... it's been in about 6 months, now I'm scared at how much I'm gunna bleed after not having a period for 15yrs

This is my third, never had a problem with them. Even kept my second one in for three years past getting a new one, should have got it changed in may 2018 and only got it changed in may this year, all good here with no extra babies (I don't recommend waiting that long).

If it comes out ring your GP and let them know. They will probably ask you to go in for an ultrasound to check it’s in or out f you didn’t see it as it came out.

If it does come out you may get a bleed return but that’s not always the case! Speak to your GP they will advise you. Don’t panic about something that may not happen !,

I had a 5 year coil, this one now is a 3 year so this next one is going to be my third. Having a coil really works for me. It’s just having it inserted thats the issue

If the strings are low its already not in the right place and should no longer be relied on for contraception. That's what mine did and it was sitting in my cervix when they removed it. It didn't hurt me either but did feel a bit weird.

The last time I had it changed was such an ordeal

they couldn’t get it so I had to go back for a scan, then I had to go to the hospital for someone else to try, then he got a colleague who eventually got it out. They then said they couldn’t fit one in that department so I had to make another appointment to go back so I just felt like half of NHS Solent had their hands rummaging around up there

I’ve never had pain after, it’s the actual having it done that I don’t want. Hoping GUM elves do it in my sleep one night

Oh bless you. You poor thing. My first one I was in terrible pain for 2 days then it suddenly stopped. Second one I just felt a bit delicate but nothing major. I think my uterus just protested a lit the first time! I'm afraid the only way I've seen anyone get around the ordeal of the fitting is having it fitted following a medical procedure while still under general anaesthetic but seems like an extreme measure to take if not already in that position

Mrs has had several mirena coil over the last 10 years. She has had issues with migraines which subsided on removal of coil.

New coil fitted in the last 3 months after nearly 5 years with out and no migraines this time

I didn't bleed to death (obviously) but....

I had a mirena coil for 4 months, during which the spotting never stopped. It did come out on its own. The bleeding afterwards was like a miscarriage, it continued for months until, thank goodness, I had surgery. Its not for everyone!

I’ve had my coil 6 weeks now and had no bleeding although I’m 12 weeks post partum so could be that. For the last few days I’ve had similar to bad period pains.

I have had low mood but not sure if it’s coil related or from sleep deprivation

I had mine fitted at the same time as a hysteroscopy, which I was dreading. I took some paracetamol with co-codamol before I went in and barely felt a thing, even when they did a biopsy. Hope you manage to get sorted, it’s horrible just not knowing what’s going on! Oh and this is my second coil, I had a copper one before this one, and I’ve never been able to bring myself to feel for the strings, the thought makes me feel funny

I’m on my 3rd merina coil and have had no issues at all apart from on my first one the strings were cut a bit short and my then bf could feel them poking him. I have no periods whatsoever. It’s the best option for me. I hated the injection and mini pill

I've grown a beard and got chronic acne from mine... my periods stopped for about 2 years which was amazing, suddenly returned this year after my vaccine (not sure if the two are connected tbh). I had it fitted to combat heavy bleeding and extreme pain rather than for contraception and it definitley improved both in the first 2 years, not so much now

Have you read up on Endometriosis/Adenomyosis? It might be worth a look if you haven't!

It’s reassuring to see that it works for so many ladies, that’s great! It appears we all react differently too! I originally got the coil fitted, because I had tried the implant, injection and pill, and they made me physically sick all day every day, with very irregular totm! I was recommended the coil to help steady my periods which were weeks/months long! When I first got the coil fitted, an hour later I was very ill and needed a medic! It’s been in 5yrs now so I need to get it replaced if I chose to replace it! Not sure on that yet? For me it’s helped totm a little, but still I’m more on than off! I think my innerds are just a bit rubbish haha

How long would you suggest I leave mine in before begging for it to be out? I've had it 17 days and it's awful. I'm moody, tearful, got stomach cramps, awful pain across my lower back and bleeding every day.

I had it inserted at an investigation appointment because of intermittent bleeding whenever a guy touched me. I was told it would be good for me to have it. If only I knew at the time.

My lowest point hormonally was after three weeks (I posted about it above, I was ready to have it taken out, I even made the appointment), after that it got a bit better. I’m now almost three months in and things are fine. I’d say leave it for a while if you can, they told me it can take three months to settle, but if you feel you really can’t cope then don’t be afraid to do what you feel is right for you x

I didn't have it for long around 6 months, but they put mine in when I had a laparoscopy a few years ago to diagnose my endometriosis so I was under when they put it in and they took it out during my hysterectomy so no experience with that side of things.

However as soon as it was in I bled near enough constantly, I had maybe 2 or 3 days break once a month from it and it was heavy so pretty awful for me.

I might be wrong but you could be bleeding and feel pain because you did not leave it enough time to settle. After I had mine fitted I was told I can't have sex for at least a week and you met your lover the very next day.

I must say that I was spotting for a few weeks myself, but nothing too extreme. And I don't have any mood swings because of it so can't help with that one.
