Finding your IP Address claims

Hi all,

I've come across an update where someone is claiming they can get your IP address from this site and then find your linked social media.

The IT nerd in me knows this isn't possible unless said person has access to the logs to this site either legally (misuse of GDPR) or illegally (security breach).

Have others came across these comments before, I can imagine it'll put the scares up some that'll think their life on here could be exposed. If it is possible then please humour me in how "you" would.

Thanks for clearing that up, without giving too much away I've been in a similar background for nearly 20 year but it's still always good to get the opinion of others

There used to be programs you could download, then input peoples IP address, you would get their addresses.

I used to use it when I younger with ICQ, you could get American addresses easier than UK ones.

For sure. And yes technically speaking it would be possible, but it's a ten million to one chance

A VPN is something I definitely recommend to people and seldom use myself

You would need to know their IP address beforehand though?

You could do the same now by googling your routers public IP address.

If you own the web site then yes, you see this information coming in from the connecting clients. However, a normal end user of this site, I would say, is unlikely to be able to do that unless they can get you to chat directly with them over something like Skype.

As you say this is technically possible. But someone would have to be sniffing all packet requests to the site and then how would they link that up to a particular user? Unless they had access to the user database and if it logged the IP address for each user logged in.

And what about if I use it from my home internet connection but then when out and about I switch to mobile network but only use other social media from home network? Different IP addresses would be linked to different sites.

My experience with computers is growing up with them and then working as network/tech support.

Yeah, getting the IP from one site is the most feasible part of the (absurd) claim. Linking that IP up to another site exponentially increases the likelihood of the person talking bollocks.

First off, compromising one site is unlikely, though possible via MITM attacks as you say. In that case you'd have to have direct access to a link in the network chain and expert knowledge of spoofing SSL handshakes in order to view the decrypted traffic.

Even from there, you wouldn't have enough info to find someone online. You'd have to hope that the site you wanted to find them on stored IP addresses, and somehow compromise that site too. And then on top of that 99% of personal broadband suppliers don't use static IP addresses, so not only will the IP addresses not marry up between the sites, but also other users will have had the same one too.
