legal ages

You know I was thinking about this after another post..

Do you not think that in this country we have some odd ways of classifying legal ages..

For example.. you cant have sex till your 16..

but you couldnt get married or hold a contract in your own name till 18.. as your not classed as being an adult till then.

If you get arrested and are 17 or over you will be treated as an adult.. but courts can still see you in other ways as a minor till 18..

and you can not get your driving licence till 17.

then dont even get me started on things like holidays where over 13's are counted as adults..

So do you think that we should have ONE age that you become an adult to do adult things etc...

As I think that its stupid that at 16 you can legally have sex etc, smoke... but cant do other things

So do you think they should make it one age for things.. and do you think that they should put the ages up or down.

Cali

The aircraft issue is about weight & carriage. A 13y/o can be as big as an adult physically and so for the purpose of carriage they are treated as such. You wouldn't ask one if he'd had chicken for dinner cos the pilot has fallen ill and they need someone to fly the plane though.

Its even on the hotels.. so I can't see how that works.. but its a Pain.. as I have 2 girls that now fall into adult category.. so they tell me that I need two rooms because I have so many adults.. but because of their ages.. I have to have one proper adult in each room...

You can get married at 16 with parents consent. My mum was married at 17. Do i think there should be one age, then yes. Some things are completely stupid. Be married and have children but cant have your own library card

the weight argument on planes is always one i moan about. i know its about payloads and the cost of fuel etc etc.

but ok.. i am biggish build about 95kg and if i take 30KG baggage i would be charged excess for being over 20kg, say on a charter flight.

yet i sat next to a woman on a plane once who was at least 130kg and hence alone weighed more than me and my bags, yet would pay no excess if she stuck to her 20kg.

is that fair..?

why not have a total weight allowance for each passanger and weigh them and the bags together...

It's all a bit ad hoc really, laws are all written separately and often decades apart. No surprise that they don't seem consistent in some sense.

They hav esilly laws governing sex and alcohol in the USA.

Many have suffered from it and society has not gained anything. Our laws are not perfect but they're with a bit of common sense.

because airlines in most countries are commercial enterprises

charging for excess baggage is one way of ensuring that the yields of a flight factor in their favour

incidentally, most airlines carry a lot of 'belly cargo' - the more bags they carry, the heavier those bags, the less cargo they can ship

and they make as much from the cargo as they do from the people up above

ever been on a flight with 50 passengers, but on a plane that seats 200 ?

usually it's down to what's down below.

they use the bigger plane not for the seats but the belly space

I do think you should be able to learn to drive at 16 as if you go straight into employment from school at 16 you are kind of limited as to where you can work as you are not allowed to learn to drive. My youngest son will be able to learn at 16 because he is registered disabled so its a bit daft that everyone else should have to wait til 17.

My daughter keeps telling me she is going to have the car at 16 as she is disabled.. but sadly for her she does not have the mental capacity to learn to drive.. but bless her she was clever enough to know she could.

I agree with 16 being the legal age to drive..

Also there is no legal age when you can leave a child unattended at home

You have to be 18 to smoke now mind.

But I do find it ridiculous that a 17 year old is fundamentally adult enough for in my opinion the two biggest responsibilities, ie;- legally allowed to create human life via sex and destroy it in the armed forces....yet isn't allowed to have a pint?

I think the age limit should be increased for learning to drive not lowered.
