After Sony drop the news that rocks the gaming world....

The PS5 IS NOT, I repeat NOT backward compatible with the back catalogue library of PS1,2 & 3 GAMES.

It seems the loyal Sony gaming community are very unhappy about this and there are pockets of "mutiny" (yes REALLY) circulating and talk of defecting to Xbox gaming rather than stay loyal to Sony.

The big question is..... DOES IT MATTER????

But I’m middle aged with not a clue, what to do

They have lied on more than once regarding backwards compatibility with previous consoled so it comes as no surprise to me.

Prob still get one as if you are a ps plus member you get 20 free games to play at launch plus one original game built in. I will go fo the digital version as it's only£359.

"invest in a pc "

I used to be a pc gamer, but the cost of hardware is just ridiculous. When a gpu alone costs many times what a console costs, I'll be sticking with the console. Yeah backwards compatibility would be nice, but I currently have a ps3 alongside my ps4. If I can replace the ps4 with a ps5, I'll still keep the ps3 for some older games. I wouldn't be able to sell it for much anyway.

We've got the ultimate in gaming consoles, it's the future of gaming (& only the second one we've ever had), yes it's true, we really do have a Sega Megadrive. Try not to be too envious.

The hardware costs are higher, but when you consider Sony have said PS5 games will be £70 and the fact you can not play older games, you have to look at how much you spend in the long term.

My PC is 5 years old, still plays most games at a really high quality, plays pretty much any game that has been released in the past and the games are much, much cheaper (especially in Steam sales and with Epic giving them away every week).

On top of that, you now have MS Game Pass which is 'really' good value for money.

I love my consoles, but they now feel like the luxury item rather than the PC.

Excellent.

Well the good news is you started with the worst of the bunch

The clarity of the screens is slightly better to much better in all alternatives and the PS Move controllers are awful for VR really.

(Don't get me wrong. I love my PSVR, it's a brilliant introduction to VR)

Sony have said VR is important to them and that the kit will be compatible with PS5, but there are also heavy hints that PSVR 2 will come to it, and I'm guessing games for that will not work on the current PSVR.

As for alternatives, it depends what you want, what you have and how much you are willing to spend.

Do you have a decent PC?

Do you want to have access to PC VR games or are you happy with a limited set that would be on the Oculus store?

Do you mind being connected by a wire to the PC, or would you prefer to be wireless and free to take VR anywhere you go?

PSVR is a cheap and good way in to VR especially if you already have a PS4. It'll also work on PS5 too.

I’ve checked out the Oculus and as that’s just a put on headset it may be enough to start with.

I’m not a ‘gamer’ I enjoy trying a few shooters or driving games but as my kids have the PS4 it would also mean they could use it, where the Oculus just for me.

I’m torn as I could afford the PS5 but as I’m not really into serious gaming, it’s obvious that the PS4 will be cheaper afterwards so just go with that instead

I suppose I want the best VR experience including watching films on it etc..without having to buy an expensive gaming PC or Laptop, so they’re out

Occulus have just announced the Rift 2.

It's a 'really' nice bit of kit.

Very nice screen (much better than PSVR), great VR controllers and it can even track your hands and fingers without the one).

It is also wireless and doesn't need any sensors in the room so you can take it anywhere.

But you 'can' get a cable to connect it to a PC to experience PCVR on it.

Without a really good PC, I'd say this is the best you can go for (I'm very tempted).

But as you say the PS4 route does offer something extra for the kids too and the headsets can be picked up second hand if needed.

You say about watching films on it, it's not something I do so can't comment on how good the PSVR is for that, but if you mean 'films' (;-)), then I have heard it's a faff ad the only way to do it is to download them on PC to a memory card and then use that in the PS4.

You can't watch any VR films in the PS4 Web browser.

I'd say check out the games and experiences that are on the PS4 before you make a final decision as I 'think' production of them will start to show now as the devs focus more on PS5 and a potential PSVR2.

Good luck, and have fun.

I'd you have any specific questions, let me know.

If I were still in the market for a PlayStation then it might irk me a bit that I can't play old games but at the end of the day you don't buy a next generation console to play first generation games do you? It has to stop at some point.

A lot of people do like to though.

I personally can't be arsed. Too many new gashes to play.

But the fact the XB looks to be backward compatible with XBone games and a massive amount of 360 and original XB games, shows Sony up here a little here.

Oh I get it, I love backward compatibility and even specifically hunted down the PS3 model which had it for that reason. My point is that how long do people expect it to be a hardware feature? It just adds complication and cost to the system. I think that a system like the Switch has it pretty good; you can play a catalogue of S/NES and soon GameBoy games on a free emulator so long as you have their online pass.

Nothing wrong with that, retro gaming is popular.

My son is a game developer, walk into his flat and he has a Sega Megadrive set up with Sonic, and a PS2 for Spyro and Rayman. And a NES with Mario.

Before lockdown his company organised LAN party meets for the local kids who could just turn up with their console and favourite games, he said the Dads used to turn up with Playstations and Xboxes to play retro

It is bigger than what people anticipate

£50 a year so less than a quid a week and two free games a month. Bargain.
