It said each prisoner costs 37k a year to keep in prison. I belive it's 2 or 4 to a cell. Most prisons are victorian, so no building costs, so how come it's that figure? Are staffing costs really that high or is it "red tape" or is it, the fact that there's a choice of 5 meals? A choice?! They're prisoners, what right to a choice of meal do they have?

Then they have TVs, X boxes, pool tables. What's wrong with a football and a pack of playing cards? That would cut down costs.

Is it just me who feels the need to rant about this?

so would you force someone with religious beliefs to eat od their religion prohibited?

i et the whole 'they done wrong and should take he consequences' attitude and do believe that they get an easier life in there than in times gone by but i dont think giving them a choice of meal is really that bad.

i believe they should be made to work and give back to the community in some way

The 37K cost that is often bandied about actually relates in a very small way to the cost of an individual prisoner, prison building maintenance (Victorian Buildings and all) is massive...the recent refit of Dartmoor Prison cost over £35m.....they could have built a brand new prison for the amount they spent.

Staff costs, prisoner transfer costs, heating, lighting, catering, educational classes, training schemes....and all and all.

Having worked temporarily in a prison pharmacy for a few months early in my career I can only chuckle at all the talk about prisoner 'luxuries'....in most cases it's a phallacy.

That's the punishement.

Deprivation of liberty is the punishment.

I understand victorian buildings have maintainance costs, my sister lives in a victorian house. What I meant was the building itself would have been paid for.

35 million renovation, they really should have purpose built a new one!

Religion is a tough one.... I'm pretty sure if a jew commited a crime in pakistan then they wouldn't be offered kosher meat, however I'd like to think we're more tollerant. However why not a vegan option (that is then suitable for any religious beliefs and vegetarians) and a "normal" option.

At that kind of cost, what's the anual cost of prisons to the UK? Couple of billion?

Why do they also get to do degrees etc? I believe they should be educated such that they can read and write to high school level...but higher education? I'm not sure about this.

My point really is with all the cut backs, surely big cuts could be made in this area?

Of course we shouldn't let them out early etc etc. I'm not saying 100% we should cut costs. It just seems like a fairly large amount per prisoner, basically I was wondering what things add up to that figure per prisoner.

My main rants were the "luxeries" such as X-box etc. If this generally isn't the case and there really aren't that many luxeries then I stand corrected and fair enough. I guess when you consider all costs involved, it soon adds up... Like I said, my sister has a victorian house. It cost almost 30k to renovate, 30k sounds a fair chunk of money, but when you break it down, you see where it all went.

Because so many are locked up for petty crime like not paying fines or should be in a hospital as they have a mental illness now perhaps you can explain what my passtimes which I havent mentioned have to do with anything

The majority actually. Each offender is risk assessed for the liklihood of causing harm to the public. Only those at deemed to be a high risk would be considered for a custodial sentence.

Community based disposals are encouraged for those suitable to complete these sentences...community service and restriction of liberty orders (tags) are direct alternative to custody for offenders that are conisered to be high risk of reoffending, but not assessed to be a high risk of causing harm to the public.

Xbox, colour TV, choice of food etc. that most seem to refer to as luxuries, cost = £ ?

Remove the 'luxuries' and you'll have a very bored inmate with an increased tendency toward violent behaviour with an ever increasing desire to escape...

Increase security, cost of man-hunts for escaped prisoners and the cost of replacing dead prison officers = £ ?

While pacifying, entertaining and looking after the prisoners might not sit to well with people who think they should be made to suffer more than just being locked up, you might spare a thought for the people who also have to live/work with them and keep them contained.

Because so many are locked up for petty crime like not paying fines or should be in a hospital as they have a mental illness now perhaps you can explain what my passtimes which I havent mentioned have to do with anything "

would tend to agree with the issue's around mental health, also the cost of locking up some 'petty' criminals..

however the people who make these judgements by and large see the actual individual and their history...

people do not get locked up for a 'petty' crime the first time they commit said..

usually only after several visits before the bench, and other sanctions, 'initiatives' have failed..

of course its not economically viable to have someone who has'nt paid a fine, but where do you draw the line..

let people live with total disregard for any sanctions to their behaviour, sometimes a 'short sharp shock' may have an effect..

what about victims of 'petty' crime, usually overlooked in such debates..

my comment about your pastime was perhaps not presented well, it was a flippant comment about you wondering about percentages of serious offenders..

will put a smiley icon or a winkie thing next time..

Doesn't seen to cut down on the reoffending rates....offenders need rehabilitation as well as punishment

The American legal system is highly flawed and highly biased.

As examples go, it is certainly not the best.

The whole point of prisons isn't about retribution. It's about loss of liberty and rehabilitation. although some of the sentences handed out for minor crimes during last rears riots did seem to have an element of retribution about them. I've no doubt that the inmates who do see their sentence as retribution are the ones who are harder to rehabilitate

Prison in this country means 'cushy' and they know it.

The soft liberals have given these prisoners rights to dictate how they are treated and what their environment is like.

I know of a guy who was in the governors office fixing some It equipment when a convicted child killer walked in and started complaining his cell was too cold.

Id make him a better cell, 6 feet under. Nice and toasty there for ya.

They have games consoles, Tvs, free Sky subsciprtion etc and free meals.

Wheres the downside? They can deal drugs and do what they like.

Its about time prison meant harsh punishment, why do you think people dont want to be extradited back to their home countires?

Also got to consider that by 'up tarriffing' the offenders that have pretty minor offences, by putting them in prison you're only giving them the opportunity to mix on a 24/7 basis the offenders that have seen and done it all and are happy to pass on their experiences
