A sub culture usually has a particular style of clothing, activity and/or music associated with it.

Have you seen the number of outdoor gear shops there are?

I also notice how many "dress up " in their gear to go to the shop

Its indeed a sub culture of mainstream and absolutely divided into many niche sub sub cultures

I absolutely disagree though that to be a sub culture one needs to be overt about it or advertise it

I'm part of both kite surf and climbing sub culture those who partake would recognise another

I'm part of health and wellbeing sub culture but I prefer to cover up bit can spot others even when they are not overt

I think that just shows you don't understand subculture. Gamers and Nerds are pretty mainstream. The answers you've dismissed as not being subculture are the ones that truly are cultures but hidden away and not known about.

Take runners, we have our clubs, rules, meets, magazines, specialist clothing, forums, debates etc, we even nod to each other like bikers do - all appearing to the outside world as 'just a hobby'

I'm a climber/mountaineer and a runner.
