"Ohh I forgot to say “mmmmm smootthhhh” and “nice” " Yeah, cool baby. I'll just put my shades and polar neck jumper on and click my fingers slow with all the other cool and hip cats. Just waiting for Alan Ginsberg to do 'Howl' with a free swinging jazz trio

"I do, I just don’t understand it, it sounds like everyone is playing different tunes but trying to make it sound like it goes together gggggahhhhh it rubs me up the wrong way But you just talking about the more improv style of bebop. You've still got Trad, big band, swing and other forms. Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Nat 'King' Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee are all jazz singers. You, and others, probably do like jazz but don't realise it is jazz." I see those artists more as swing than jazz, I prefer dirty rock tunes

"Thing is, define jazz? As others have said there are plenty of artists considered "jazz" who I like, and in fact plenty of artists not considered "jazz" who have dropped the odd tune that would be described as "jazz" Cleo Laine was considered "jazz" but so were Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen and yet their styles were wildly different. Like with most "styles" of music I like some jazz, dislike others " You can't define jazz because it has so many sub-genres and crossovers. I like some jazz and not others. I like some rock and not others. But quite a few people just see jazz as the freestyle/improv. version so they 'don't like jazz'. But they probably like some styles of jazz but not think of it as jazz.

Exactly my point - although funnily enough say "jazz" to me and my first thought is the Kenny Ball, New Orleans style as opposed to beatniks in a smokey club listening to freeform. A lot of The Style Council's first album "Cafe Bleu" would be considered "jazz" by some for example and yet say Weller to most people and jazz would probably be the last thing they'd associate with him.

If understanding it is your issue then I'm happy to help you get to grips with it. I have a music degree and have run music appreciation classes in the past. Luke

"Johnny Hates Jazz have the record for the longest span of time between their first album (yes an album) and the follow up album. It took 25 years! " I have neither. Did I miss out?
