‘Money doesn’t buy happiness’ but it does buy financially security so you always have somewhere to live, something to wear and something to eat. It also gives you the freedom to pursue hobbies/adventures

Money on it’s own? No, never. But it can make life a hell of a lot more comfortable. It’s easier to focus on your happiness when your aren’t worrying about where your next meal is coming from, or how you’re going to be able to afford the rent, or what you’ll do if the car fails it’s MOT this year.

Life is always easier when you can pay the bills with no problem.

Having money does not make you happier, it brings other problems as well. Usually you work long hard hours and miss out on a lot of stuff. Also it can make you feel insecure and suspicious of others.

Manchester (she/her)

It's a very middle class expression.

If you're not financially secure, money can solve that, and solve a great deal of unhappiness.

Just because it can't solve all emotional problems, doesn't mean it doesn't solve the ones caused by need

Apparently the answer is yes - but only up to a point. For someone living in poverty money could well be the only thing missing to make them happy. Once you have enough to be comfortable though, adding more doesn't increase your happiness.

To whoever above said that money often comes with long hours at work, that kind of implies that people who are poor don't work hard which is both untrue and judgemental

Don't think its a straight yes and no answer Money is always great to have and as others have said it brings you stability and to some form offers more experiences, but just as much as anything its what you do with the money that can make you happy or not plus money us never enough you will always chase another £500 no matter how stable you are financially.

"Can money buy long term happiness?"

It totally depends on what angle you're asking the question and if it's a hypothetical question about money in its own ..as in you're saying full health is also part of the question ..ok here's my tuppence worth..if you're just talking about a person as an individual ..l would say yes as they will have the money to do and go where they want and buy whatever they need to satisfy their desire for Happiness ..now ,if it's a married or couple scenario ..l would say If with the right person yes ..if not with the right person ..no....but l don't d work with a guy who once said to me .." money can't buy love but it can buy you a big car to go out and look for it " ...and another guy used to say .." life is like a shit sandwich..the more bread you have..the less shit you eat "...

It doesn’t make you happier but removes some worries you could have without it, example where the next meal is coming from for your kid, roof over your families head etc.

For me happiness isn’t material things, it’s the people in my life and what you share together, which doesn’t cost anything.

"Can money buy long term happiness?"

It can’t & theres a whole scientifically backed theory as to why that is the case. It all centres around normality & how changes in circumstances eventually create a new normality off the back of those changes. The study took recently widowed people & recent winners of large sums of money & asked them tk rank their happiness. Over time they continued to ask them to rank how happy they were. Obviously at the start the recent money winners were at the top ofnthe scale whilst the widows & widowers were at the bottom. Over time they found that ‘normality’ set in & the two groups slowly gravitated to a more ‘levelled out’ line of happiness which was largely the same.

I was very rich in my first marriage but no amount of designer dresses and cruises and the best of everything made me happy in the end. I'm pretty comfortable now, not rolling in it, but don't have money worries and I'm in a happy place. I've never had to really worry about having money, I'm very lucky, although I've worked so so hard for what I have. So, I don't think being wealthy makes you happy but it does make you feel more secure in life.

Even materialistic people aren’t really happy, it’s a very short lived buzz. Too much money can stifle creativity too, we did an all inc. in Jamaica one year , first class flights, 5*!dining , swim up cocktails was absolutely lovely but our best holiday ever was driving a beat up Mondeo around the south coast of France wild camping with a boot full of Asda food and cheap wine and literally no money to spend.

Money isn't a magic bullet for happiness but it's nice to have enough that you can buy things that you want without putting yourself in debt and have a decent roof over your head, or to be able to afford holidays which undoubtedly make a world of difference to your mental wellbeing. It's also good to be able to use it to treat family members or close friends to nice things at birthdays/Christmas.

"Can money buy long term happiness?"

I don't think so, but it can make some aspects of life more comfortable.

Being skint is stressful. Not having to worry about bills and debts certainly makes that aspect of life easier.

Whoever said money can’t buy happiness isn’t spending it right.

I think it can buy peace of mind if it removes the worry of debt for example but that doesn't mean happiness.

If you're unhappy with other happenings in your life then money will help but deep down the hurt would continue.

I know rich happy people and rich unhappy people so there's definitely more to it than just money

There are happy people and sad people. Money doesn't change that. But money alleviates 95% of problems.

Funny really, when you can't afford something you can really crave it, when you are in the position to afford it, suddenly it doesn't hold the same attraction.

It can as I'd enjoy looking after others and seeing their finances are in order.

It’s #1 lesson in financial freedom, you’ll never crave a pension ! Don’t shop when hungry

In my opinion, no. Just short term happiness.

That's true but you can enjoy loads and loads of little short term happiness.

I’m going to disagree

It can definitely make life easier if you don’t have enough and have stress and worry of bills etc. But You only need a very little bit more to buy healthily food, a few books to educate and go on picnics and trips with family and friends.

Once you’re not worried about about bills , lack of money can make you very creative and adventurous as a family, and very close, whereas extra money can make some families boring, distant, impatient and selfish.

Money can buy you a much fancier lifestyle but not the people or relationships to share it with. An observation, relationships are often more authentic the less money is available or involved.

Stress and mental health issues are just as high in the middle class - you worry about different things.
