Why people pay a fortune for tyres I never know, it’s not like they are racing drivers...."

I only pay for the named brands as I put safety first (especially with my kids in the car), yes I am sure cheaper tyres could do just as good a job, but I guess I'm a bit snobbish like that!

Shop around, even Internet companies where they come to you are usually much cheaper than the chains. Make a few phone calls and you would be surprised how much you could save.

A decent set of tyres is akin to a decent set of shoes My motor has continental 205/70’s fitted I’d imagine they’re £80 to £100 Each

the cheaper brands do not last as long and seem to loose grip far quicker.

i drive vans, cars and ride a motorbike.

work put cheap ones on the vans and they last about two months.

my car had dunlops on and they seem to last for ever.

the motorbike has bridgestones on it and they are fantastic. until one day they dont feel right and its time for new ones. almost feels like they are built to let you know when the need changed.

But did you know - tyres as fitted to a new car are a harder compound and last longer than any replacement. The rational being that tyre companies lose money selling to car manufacturers but make it up in the replacement market.

Most spent was around £250 for 2 branded higher spec tyres.

But I buy budget ones now, do some research on them, various sites and tyre compare sites with reviews got two for 110 they have proven better than the high branded ones I had on before, going to replace another two this month.

Run flats are poor just so you know this if you have a puncture they can only run another 50 mile on them

Your far better off buying a cheaper tyre and putting green gue inside of them

Had a set of Roadhogs back in the mid 90's that seemed to last a lifetime

It is pointless spending a lot of money on tyres where I live. There are 20 mph speed limits in place nearly everywhere and a lot of the time you'd be lucky to exceed that anyway. Everything is being geared up for cyclists. £50 a tyre is more than enough !

new cars DO not have harder tyres fitted as standard you get less grip more so in rain and more road noise from hard tyres i would never put them on my car the general ride quality is impaired think safety not money in pocket

I’ve toured a tyre factory and it’s fascinating. It doesn’t cost much more to make a high performance tyre than a normal one, it’s based on what they think people will pay. The main cost is in being able to manufacture the base compound in bulk and at a consistent quality.

The thinking is if you had say Goodyear as new and they lasted 35k then you will buy the same. They won’t last as long.

Never more that £280 a full set of 4. Luckily I have fairy standard 16inch wheels on my civic, so more about £230 these days (my old 2.2 TDCI mondeo wheels cost a bit more per unit). Generally go for great rain proformance as we see a lot of it in this country. A good choice of tyre is so important, not just for stopping but also staying in contact with the raod. But for most it doesn't need to cost the earth. I like to seek the best bang for my buck trye wise. Some tyres are a rip off and paying for a name rather than proformance. Currently enjoying the Bridgestone Turanza but also had the Goodyear Efficientgrip in the past (which are about the same price).

I'd suggest that assertion of " life" ending is a guess and has zero statistical basis

Expensive does not mean more grip and cheap " unless either remould illigeal or part worn" does not mean less safe

If there was ANY statistical data that a tyre was failing then it would be banned

I've never seen a "tyre shaming" thread before where people boast about their cars by stealth. Branded tyres may well be better to an extent but don't forget you're also paying for the sponsorship, motorsport jollys & adverts. Plenty of decent midrange brands about that don't break the bank for us mere peasants to put on our cars.

Don’t go for the brand. Look at the ratings label on the tyre. Surprised no one else has mentioned that. Also, I nearly bought a set of tyres which had the letter on to denote that it was specially made to suit my make of car. That’s a load of bollocks. I bought exactly the same tyres but without the “J” on and they were £30 cheaper each, AND they had a higher rating for grip, noise and fuel consumption.

When I was in America they had a treadwear index im on the tyre which was a good guide to tyre life.

Not sure if UK tyres have it because I've always had company cars and they change them when needed under the contract.

I've always bought my daughter good tyres as I couldn't live with myself if anything happened related to tyres being cheaper with less grip, longer braking etc but her car tyres are so small it's not to bad anyway.

Motorcyclist here. Absolutely agree.

True, but being in the motorcycle trade I've seen uprated brakes and other go faster mods then looked at the shot tyres, or incorrectly fitted, split, damaged, bulging, etc. As the small patch of contact is all that keeps you in control, tyres need regular checks, correct pressure, otherwise it doesn't matter how expensive or good they are.

Motorcycle tyre manufacture is getting more complex, they are now very high performance, but need looking after. Putting high spec tyres on a restricted 125, waste of time, could even be dangerous as they may not get hot enough, but the same tyre on a racing 125, and they will perform perfectly.

Over many years I have bought so called top brand name tyres and ones that are considered budget tyres and can honestly say the budget tyres have worn much better. I have has more serious issues with brand name tyres, such as bulges appearing, lumps of tread falling out etc.
