"... was told by numerous mentors do not undersell your work." This is true! If it's free, it's of no value! A lot of people undermine the profession by undervaluing their work, and a lot of people try to get work done free for "exposure". Plus, you get a lot of wannabes trying their hand who place no value on their work, and utlimitly destroy the market. Yes, I have to write down / off the cost of equipment. I've got to rent studio space. I've got a host of other costs and expenses associated with the business side of it... not to mention the value of thirty plus years of experience, and that's got to come back somewhere. The photography industry is in a perilous state at the moment. Computational photography and smartphones have, by and large, given the public the idea that its just a button press. To be fair, for a lot of peoples photographic needs, a recent high-end smartphone has gone well beyond sufficient a long long time ago. More people are willing to have a go, and use apps afterwards. The whole industry has been deskilled, and as the skill has fallen, so has the value. | |||
