I think crazy is good when it's all harmless and fun. I'm not sure where the line is, but there does come a point where crazy is just toxic to be around and I really don't like that kind of crazy. The word crazy (like mad and psycho) has too many connotations really - from someone being a bit silly to fullblown psychosis.

Dictionary.com reccomends these words as alternatives:

Silly,atypical,antisocial,erratic (behaviour),irrational,strange,weird,preposterous

But those words are either a bit clinical or not quite right.

I would prefer to use crazy/mad but with modifiers.

'I was the weirdo at school and I've been *serious* crazy and silly crazy.'

I spent too much time in A&E in my youth with a wreckless ex who I was worried may actually end up dead one day and I can't be dealing with the emotional side of crazy with all the stalking, arguing and possessiveness.
