Fletch

Norman Stanley fletcher.

Fletcher: Lovely day for it.

Prison Officer: You won't be getting IT for a long time.

Fletcher: You obviously haven't had it for a long time.

Has to be porridge, I was once interviewed to be a Prison Officer and during a chat with other Officers, they mentioned Porridge and asked us (we were doing tests) if we thought it was accurately portraying prison life. We answered no not really, he said it was very accurate, he’d met every single character over the years and yes, plenty of ‘Fletchers’

Fletch first me every time

Fork handles skit makes me smile just thinking about it

Porridge was great, Going Straight not so good

Short sighted Clarence was pretty good too

Loved Open All Hours

And Barry Cryer was the Phantom Raspberry-Blower himself.

I used to go to school with somebody who lived next door to Ronnie Barker.

There and to the left a bit

Open All Hours was probably my least favourite of his shows - just found it a little twee in the Last Of The Summer Wine sense.

Porridge was a classic, The Two Ronnies likewise

The real joy of Ronnie Barker, much like his protege David Jason, was his ability to be convincing as a complete variety of characters and his sense of timing and word play.

BRIDPORT

Has to be his portrayal of ‘Fletch’ in Porridge for me. I never tire of watching it and even though you know what’s coming you can’t help but laugh.

He used to have a second home near by and could occasionally be seen in town, had a friend who managed a Currys shop and sold him electrical appliances on several occasions, he said he was a real gent and very unassuming.

"Definitely four candles . 'ose ...garden 'ose? "

All the classic two Ronnies sketches, mastermind, crossed lines, round of drinks, mispronunciation sketch but four candles tops them all.

I can't think of anything he did that was bad.

If I had to pick a favourite it would be porridge or open all hours.

Salford Quays , Manchester

I think he was one of the greatest comedy actors of all time.

He really seemed to become the character he was playing.

You wouldn't think that " Fletch " and "Arkwright" were played by the same person.

But am I the only one who now getting sick and tired of the number of times his shows are being repeated on tv.

Talk about overkill.

I preferred Ronnie Barker in Open All Hours than Porridge. In Open all hours he starred together with David Jason in all the episodes. In Porridge the two did appear together in two episodes. In Going Straight the spin-off to Porridge Nicholas Lyndhurst plays his son. Both David Jason & Nicholas Lyndhurst would go on to star in perhaps the greatest British comedy of all time Only Fools And Horses. I think working with Ronnie Barker helped them both in their careers.

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

Barker's ability to be absolutely filthy at peak time and get away with it due to the wordplay involved.
