By the Kinks was the first record (those under 30 google it) that I ever purchased. It was 1970 and it cost 6/- 8d Or 80p in today’s doe.

I bought it from Woolworths and saved up the money from a paper round for which I was paid 25 shillings a week.

I fell in love with music from then on.........what was your first foray in to the wonderful world of choones !

There and to the left a bit

My cringe moment as the first two I can remember buying as a 7 or 8 year old were:

Long Haired Lover From Liverpool - Little Jimmy Osmond

Nice One Cyril - The Cockerel Chorus

First "proper" single as a teen was Slap & Tickle by Squeeze though so I made up for it

Good old days going into whsmith and listening to them in the little booth before you bought it.

My first gf then had a deep voice and my older brother used to shout out when she called round...its lola for you

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

since when was 6s 8d 80p?

If there were 20 shillings in a pound, and 12 pennies in a shilling, surely the decimal equivalent was 37p?

Was OP one of those for whom the metric system was too complex?

Really sorry it was 80d

As in 80 denari as in one third of an old pound.

The D and P was confused as are most DPs on this site!

We had one like that, you could stack the records so when one finished the next one dropped. It played 45’s 33’s and 78’s

SE London

I had been lucky, my older sister collected all the 1970s records and played them as loud as possible to the annoyance of my mom. Later I got most of her collection when she moved out.

I have recorded a lot of the music when I was young from Radio Luxembourg on cassette.

The first records I actually bought were Queen's "Jazz" and Eric Clapton's "Just one Night", I have expanded my collection since then

As I was trying to learn the trumpet at that time, I also listened to a lot of recordings of Louis Armstrong (my dad's records) and Maurice Andre's Baroque trumpet (My mum's music). I am neither but still enjoy the music
