Yeah I know what you mean if you think about it you start to think of all the things you don’t like about yourself but from their perspective they don’t see the flaws you see in yourself and are saying it as in the fact you are unique

A compliment followed by a qualification always leaves a lingering doubt.

Definitely a compliment, but i understand why you night think it's not. You kind of doubt "in my own way" - am I now normal?, am I not beautiful in the conventional way ?

But as others have said , it the uniqueness that this person likes about you - it's a beautiful thing

Besides we are all unique in our own way - for someone to say they think its beautiful, is the biggest compliment

There's physical beauty in everyone if your eyes are tuned to it. I don't mean that trite bloody stuff that people trot out though.

I remember sitting with a friend once and thinking how beautiful the curve of her inner thigh was, not in a sexual way but in the same way I'd appreciate a leaf for example.

It depends very much on the delivery and context I think.

They might have meant that you are beautiful but not in a classical way.

The woman I fell in love with hook, line and sinker was beautiful in her own way. She’s pretty, but it’s when she laughed or had a genuine big smile on her face she made my heart beat faster.

Her face suited smiling and rather than having a horrible laugh as many other people generally do (in my opinion) hers was cute and addictive. It made me want to make her happy and see that smile and hear her laugh.

To others she’s a nice looking lady, too me she’s absolutely beautiful in her own way, that’s very personal for me and why people fall in love with each other and see something more in a person.

So you can be beautiful in a different way to someone else

Some people do mean it as a compliment when they say these things, though they're possibly a little badly worded.

I did have a guy at uni though who told me I wasn't typically attractive but that he thought I was. It was like I was supposed to feel lucky that he did and like a dig that other people probably didn't. He was very manipulative though and was definitely negging me.

If they meant it as a compliment then it was.

I love backhanded compliments, they make me laugh. Especially when they mean it. Means a lot more to me than some trite 'you look nice' rubbish.

My favourite was "you're not as fat as you were".

From a bloke who never says anything nice, it was a massive compliment.

For me it's not a compliment but it is probably intended as one.

You are either beautiful or not. No need to add a qualifier.

I think its very easy to overthink or read too much into something. I'd say it was a lovely compliment as we we are all beautiful in our own way..

I have a fairly good idea of what I think is beautiful, what people say is "classical beauty". Comments like that, to me, definitely mean that you don't match up to that idea in some way.

That doesn't mean someone's not attractive, but perhaps not tongue on floor drooling attractive... but then 99% don't fall into that category.

What it can be a sign of, is that despite being aware that someone isn't classically beautiful, there's still something incredibly sexy about them. Beautiful and sexy not being the same thing.

It feels socially unacceptable to say to a woman that she turns you on in an animalistic way, an unshaved pussy being a typical example, that you want her on her knees taking a face full of cum... so you say something a bit more polite sounding... like you're beautiful in your own way.

So you could find it insulting if you want to be thought of as beautiful when you're making guys have dirty thoughts about you instead.
