"We still love our punk Been to Rebellion. The Aternative Weekends at Butlins, MOrecambe, Undercover all them events and loads of other gigs. The covid malarkey has put a right spanner with playing but music keeps us going. We are still looking to arrange a punk / alt players party either at someones house or a meet up at a club (prob Ab Fabs) for people from in Surrey / Berks / South London / anywhere when this is over Anyone up for this?" Oh yes and yes... Love live music... Some punk is so refreshing compared with so much heavily produced music... Still love to whack on "never mind the bollocks" and throw the windows open. But... There's also a lot of really crap punk.

"Ok I’ll say it Sex Pistols are shite and overrated " Whilst I'd agree that the Pistols are afforded more credit than they are probably due and that some of the bands you listed (particularly The Clash, The Ruts and The Buzzcocks) were better, I'd disagree that they are either shite or over rated - Pretty Vacant, Anarchy In The UK and God Save The Queen alone are testament to that - thing is The Pistols were the controversial figureheads at the time who made the headlines and in a way paved the way for the others who just got on with it and developed their talents while the Pistols carried on their pantomime - there's no doubting the talent of Mr Lydon though and some of the stuff he did with PiL was when you truly saw that talent.

Unfortunately you say punk to the average person on the street, or someone who knows nothing about the scene but think they do, will claim The Sex Pistols were the best band. They’re ignorant to the truly great bands that were around and making great music and not just generating news articles and rude lyrics. However I don’t hate the Pistols and think their music certainly added to the movement, but it annoys me the great punk bands are not remembered better, due to the Pistols notoriety. Agree with Lydon and PIL though ![]()

Agree with Lydon and PIL though ![]() Oh agree absolutely - to the uninitiated punk was The Pistols and The Pistols were punk, which is a massive disservice to some of the bands you've named and many you've not. The Pistols always were a pantomime and Lydon the perfect panto villain against McClaren's Dame..and they played their part to the hilt. The Clash on their own were ten times what The Pistols were

"Ok I’ll say it Sex Pistols are shite and overrated The Clash Stranglers The Damned SLF Buzzcocks Dead Kennedy’s Sham 69 The Ruts All better in my opinion ![]() But without them very few if any of those bands would have got going..Joe strummer would have still been playing pub rock..and also it wouldn't have had the same impact..I mean as an 11 year old the only reason I got interested was because I'd seen stuff in the news of the world about the sex pistols..no doubt not long after the bill Grundy thing.. without the pistols I feel things would have been a lot different..

"Ok I’ll say it Sex Pistols are shite and overrated The Clash Stranglers The Damned SLF Buzzcocks Dead Kennedy’s Sham 69 The Ruts All better in my opinion ![]() Yes I know. But without the pistols how much media interest would there have been..I doubt it would have had the same impact... despite new rose being far superior to anarchy in the UK..it would have passed without much notice.. being on a small independent rather than pistols on EMI..

"Ok I’ll say it Sex Pistols are shite and overrated The Clash Stranglers The Damned SLF Buzzcocks Dead Kennedy’s Sham 69 The Ruts All better in my opinion ![]() It’s difficult to imagine punk rock without the Pistols, free trade hall legendary gig, John Lydon or even the film the great rock n roll swindle and I’m not forgetting Bill Grundy either (I think siouxsie sioux was on that as well). It’s the fact that you say Punk and the great unwashed saySex Pistols ![]() ![]()

" Dingwalls at Camden... I was just explaining to my kids who get their music served up on Spotify... About that John peel moment introducing teenage kicks... Music felt a bit more special then as you had to make a bit more effort to find it or see it... " Nail on the head - back then discovering new music was an adventure rather than the disposable way we find it all now - things like getting a new album and not only listening to it endlessly track by track but also devouring the sleeve and the inner as you listened to it are lost to kids of today who download the tracks they like - or finding that the B-side of a single was actually quite good too - or discovering the little scratched messages on the run out bit of the vinyl...ah happy memories
