Manchester (she/her)

Wild type polio has been eradicated in Africa.

We're getting ever closer to eradicating polio, like we did with smallpox.

Vaccination is an amazing thing

"Science is the dogs bollocks. "

It really is

Almost everything we take for granted these days has some sort of basis in science.

"The beneficial things we humans can do when we put out minds to it."

Polio remains in just two countries now.

Hopefully soon it'll go the way of smallpox. And we can work on eradicating other things.

A little prick: sometimes a wonderful thing

Amen to the people who paid attention to it in schools/college/uni’. We’d still have a life expectancy of teen years otherwise.

And have a life that was nasty, brutish, and short.

Bradford

I remember having the injection at school and still have an indentation on my upper left arm. Bloody hurt but seemed to be worth it.

Bill Gates does not do witchcraft! He's much more a voodoo kind of guy...

Seriously though, it's good news about the polio, but the history of this does show how the ignorance and stupidity of a few can cause suffering and misery gor many. Apparently this virus was very nearly eliminated about 20 years ago, with the last hold out of it being in Nigeria. Until anti-vaxxer conspiracy theories took hold of the government and people there. The virus spread again, getting a new foothold across the world. Twenty years later, many paralysed children later, billions of pounds later, the virus is once more on the threshold of extinction...

I have a lot of extremely impolite opinions about antivaxxers and the ignorant nonsense they spew. The suffering they cause is profound, and will likely become more so in the current climate.

Without medical advancement a lot of my close family would not be alive today.

Ditto x

In fact, it's a very old thing now, well over a century old, but without a certain medical advancement I would have died a long time ago, and I rely on it every day to keep me alive.
