Ownbrand or Branded...

Due to the ebbing and flowing of the current financial tides, are you turning more to supermarket 'own brand' groceries rather than the big-name brands?

Do you feel embarassed carrying your LIDL, ALDI bags to the car?....Do you hope no-one see's your Morrisons 'value', yellow-labelled shopping at the checkout?...Is it really smart to buy Asda 'smartprice' goods?

With the majority of own brand labels being canned, bottled, manufactured, processed etc by the leading brands and simply have a minor ingredient difference ( McVities biscuits made with castor sugar for example, where they manufacture 'shop brands' using granulated) and different packaging, does it make sense to buy the cheaper alternative or are you a diehard brandname buyer?

Depends in the product I think.

Get nice fruit and veg, and meat, then save money on biscuits, and basic ingredients like sugar flour pasta rice, then use up the savings on Kellogg's cornflakes where own brand really isn't the same.

Also, bogof is great, on food can be a waste of money if it won't get used, but cleaning products, kitchen roll pile em high...

I tned to agree....a cheap pasta won't be particularly noticeable if you make a good sauce...eg. things like tinned tomatoes can be helped along with a bit of sugar added. Plain flour

The trick is to be objective...Real lovers of food/cooking will know that price doesn't really have any bearing on how nice a particular thing might be. You could have the most expensive smoked eel and yes it might taste divine but that doesnt mean that a well cooked chicken liver is any less flavourful.

I couldn'tgive a tinkers cus what the brand name is - so long as it's tasty and cheap.

We live close to a place called Morpeth - a fairly well to do oldie worldie market town. For a while I was working at a job in Morpeth and Mrs Red works in Morpeth, so we'd meet up for lunch. Lunch comprised of eating our sandwiches in my van, sat in Lidl's car park.

We used to piss ourselves laughing at the amount of people who'd come out of Lidl with a shit load of shopping, go to their car then transfer it into M&S or Sainsbury carrier bags !!! That is the Gospel truth - it was fucking hilarious to watch.

If you check the nutrition labels on the side of tins and packages some are a lot healthier than up market brands ie less salt, sugar, fats etc.

Super market snobbery makes us laugh when you see people with up market labelled shopping bags being loaded with stores own brand stuff and the people look embarrassed, it's only food! You have to eat and drink to stay alive so why make a fuss about it

true in the sense that you shouldn't be snobby but food can be a sensuous thing(as in to do with the senses not necessarily to do with sex) social, human spirit kind of thing, far beyond just fuel for the body

Lidl's and Aldi's have good stuff, and I am proud to shop in them!

Back in late 2008/early 2009, I saw a number of well-heeled customers in my local Lidl's, obviously displaced from the likes of M&S and Waitrose, and they were ogling some of the delights on offer in the freezer section.

Smart shoppers shop at Lidl's and Aldi's.

Branded...im not a food snob, but decent brands like Heinz, Schwepps, Birds eye etc have got a reputation because they are good and tasty...Tesco value lemonade or Whites?..

Tesco have just re branded their Value range because of the jokey reputation it earned, mostly justified as it was shit quality.

Id rather eat a smaller portion of food than a large portion of 'food' that leaves a weird taste in the mouth

When those value ranges came out stores led us to beleive that it was that price because of cheaper packaging and packing methods...total bollocks, its that prices because its mostly poor quality.

I do my weekly grocery shop at my local Morrisons, and visit the Lidl's across the road from my house from time to time to see if there is anything I fancy.

Usually I stick with branded items.

Lidl's Lasagne is the best I have tasted, and they do them in single portions!

Agree isofar as despit the hippy in me railing against corporate stuff and branding..the only way alot of brands are brands is because they are bloody good.

heinz ....absofuckinglutley

R whites ...i couldnt agree more

I reckon its particularly true for ready made/concocted things, less so for raw ingresients.

I you're cooking from scratch it comes down to cooking techniques...an extra virgin bertolli olive oil would get lost in a spag bol ...its not worth it.

as a salad dressing I'd opt for the brand though. But thats only based on having tasted the thing objectively and decided it tastes good.

Thats my philosophy pretty much summed up....

Agree with you on meats etc. Asda baked beans are better than heinz imo and most of the tinned stuff too and at the side of main brands some are healthier.

Fresh fruit and veg is cheap enough if own brand is available and the frozen fruit and veg is good too although we use home grown as much as possible.

Dried foods such as noodles, rice etc and baking products are cheap as chips and can be made into something good and nutritious.

It all comes down to taste, preference and affordabilty
