Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens. ... When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we're sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future.

Do you practice mindfulness?

My therapist took me through it and whilst I found it quite interesting it didn’t do a lot for me.

Doesn’t work for everyone, apparently

I believe we need to be focused, disciplined and most importantly self aware to experience that. I have been trying. It's not easy.

As long as you are breathing there is more right with you than wrong with you, no matter what the condition of your body and it's history and no matter what you are facing in this moment. Jon Kabat-Zinn.

Since my first serious breakdown almost 4 years ago I have been listening to a Mindfulness guided meditation every night to help clear my mind of all the nasty stuff that accompanies depression & anxiety and causes insomnia. I haven't practiced mindfulness as much as I could/should have but it has been a great help to me.

Yes and I would recommend it to everyone.

Its simply about being in the present moment.

So it could be taking a break from work or study and having something to eat but really tasting it or just observing your thoughts and not judging or labeling them.

It does need practice but I firmly believe everyone would benefit from some form of mindfulness in their lives.

Did it for a few years ages back helped with switching off and getting better sleep, less anxiety.

Then I started doing it again at the start of lock down, suppose I've stopped making time for it the last few weeks as were more into the normal, I know it helps so gonna switch off now and make time for it again

Honestly go for it.

It can be something but you just dip in-and-out of and use maybe help with pain relief for sleep.

Or it can be a way of life, It's entirely up to you.

It's something I'm trying to make a way of life but it does need a lot of practice and just remember it's simply about being in the present moment and that doesn't have to be all the time.

Sorry if I sound preachy, its just something I'm really passionate about. X

Basically you start by laying down on your bed and clenching your toes for 10 seconds, then your calves for 10 seconds, then thighs, ass cheeks, shoulders, biceps, forearms, fist, then clench all of them at the same time for 20 seconds then relax, you'll literally feel so relaxed you sink into your mattress.

Serious question about the muscle moving/clenching thingy. How does it work if you can't move whole muscle groups? I can't bend the toes on my left foot, my hip flexor and quads basically don't work and trying to make them move just results in at best, nothing, or worst, the whole leg going into spasms and excruciating pain. I ask this seriously.

The pain sounds bad and the last thing you need is to aggregate it! Hope you find something that works for you. Maybe this could still be practiced but I don't know anything about it.

Thanks, Annabelle. I'd admit, I get frustrated at a "this definitely works for everyone and anyone, it's so easy" type of thing. Like walking 10,000 steps a day. What could be easier?!

I can't bend the toes on my left foot, my hip flexor and quads basically don't work and trying to make them move just results in at best, nothing, or worst, the whole leg going into spasms and excruciating pain. I ask this seriously. "

I'm no expert or physio, but in this situation dont clench the muscles on limbs that could cause pain, just work up the other leg to the shoulders and down the arms, when it comes to the full body clench try to keep the problem limb relaxed if possible, hopefully you will still get a similar relaxing result without causing spasm & pain

There is a less aggressive type of body scan more inline with mindfulness, by concentrating on individual parts of your body in turn, being aware of how they feel while at rest, the pressure and feel of the body part against what you are layed on, how it feels when you wiggle your toes or fingers, noticing how your chest and abdomen move in a gentle wave as you breath in and out, feeling your breath flow in and out of your nose or mouth.

Mindfulness is about paying attention to your body and how it reacts in different situations & environments, for example if you are stressed or upset your body will react in a certain way... increased heart rate & rate of breathing, knotted stomach, overthinking. By being aware of how it reacts you can try to take back control of your body by concentrating on slowing down your breathing which will slow down your heart rate, as you concentrate on doing that you will stop overthinking about what stressed or upset you in the first place.

It's also about being aware of your environment, taking the time to notice whats around you, such as going for a walk and seeing the different colours of flowers, how they move in a breeze, the different smells around you. it doesnt take any special effort to do but you will notice you havent been thinking about what troubles you so much.

Thats my understanding of it anyway.

Not really but I don't live in the past or the future I live in the now. I just walk forward and see what the day brings. Not let me down yet...

Sure, with so many goals, plans, huge to-do lists and demands from others, It’s useful to remember the real priority is the quality of the present moment!

Look up progressive muscle relaxation.

Some are specifically designed for people with pain and or mobility issues.

Thats normally a good place to start.

I've read your other post and I will add mindfulness isn't easy and there is no one cap fits all.

Its finding whats helpful, effective and useful for you.

Chams or Socials

I was offered these while having my chemo but decided against them as i didnt want to be in too crowded a place while my immune system was suppressed. I like to call it situational awareness, being aware of your thoughts and surroundings at all times.

Yep.

I've been colouring for five years now. It's really helped my mental health so much, and I help to create something pretty.

It's not something I do in any kind of structured way, or that I set time aside to do it.

I made a conscious decision a while ago not to dwell on anything in the past and things that I have no control over

That’s a great decision.

There’s a time for reflection, to build wisdom and help make better decisions , but very different from dwelling on the past. When mentoring I get people to mediate on similar situations that could come up in the future as part of there goals and act out various responses in their mind.

"I need to start doing this again especially before going to sleep. Helped loads before and was sleeping alot better for it.

There are some fantastic guided sleep mindfulness videos on YouTube, i really like the ones by calm.

Been using some of the head space app ones

I like those too and I used to do it daily but I find the calm ones really good.

Do you find them helpful? "

Yeah though I've never used calm so I'll give that a go too.

I know nothing much about it. Sounds interesting....my mind could certainly do with a declutter and some housekeeping!

Ruby wax summarises it really well.

Shes a real advocate for it.

I like Ruby Wax, this may be a good start....thanks.

I have the 4cd audiobook of "The Mindful Way Through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness (includes Guided Meditation Practices CD)" by Mark Williams, John Teasdale, Zindel Segal, Jon Kabat-Zinn.

Sounds like you are quite experienced with it. For me taking 5 minutes to sit and breathe would be a good start. Just into get in tune with myself.

"body scans" are perfect for when you have 5 minutes spare & want to relax or de-stress.

I wull Google that, thanks

Basically you start by laying down on your bed and clenching your toes for 10 seconds, then your calves for 10 seconds, then thighs, ass cheeks, shoulders, biceps, forearms, fist, then clench all of them at the same time for 20 seconds then relax, you'll literally feel so relaxed you sink into your mattress.

Ah I have heard of this. I'm off to bed shortly. I'm going to try it...thanks "

I do this, it really can help remove tensions

"

Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens. ... When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we're sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future.

Do you practice mindfulness?"

I went to a class work organised once. Came out of there very stressed and patronised. Found it very unhelpful. Outside the group then mindfulness surround me every day.
