Shag put a thread up earlier and its encouraged me to set my alarm tomorrow morning to get up and walk till my tracker tells me I've done my 10k " Oh fair, I didn't see that thread. To be fair even after a couple of months of increasing my walking I still get tired around the 45 minute mark. You may only have time for a 45 minute dedicated walk but you can pick up plenty of steps in everyday life - we've just perfected the art of not having to with cars and lifts and chairs everywhere. You mention being tired by the effort and that is natural. Assuming you're counting these as a way of losing weight/getting fitter, it is important to realise these changes take months. Im a pretty fit runner, used to training for long distance events but if I have a marathon coming up I'll allow 3 months or so to train for it, longer ultras will see a 6 month training plan with the prior 6 months built around preparing for that plan. Don't expect miracles and do expect daily variations in how hard something feels, how much you achieve. There will be days where it feels too hard, where you feel like you're just going backwards. Don't let these days make you give up, the changes you want take time, lots of time so allow that and take pride in the changes as they happen. Good luck" Thank you! " I did HIIT (running/walking) up until recently but it exacerbated an old knee injury so just sticking to walking until I've lost some more weight. | |||

For some people, with a lot to lose, this can add up to 500 calories plus. It can only be the only way to exercise for some too. I personally cannot do HIIT due to medical reasons either! | |||

I walk my dogs twice a day and usually 30 minutes min each walk, which helps me hit my target (fitbit inspire bastard on my wrist) I've gotten into a 10pm habit for the evening dog walk and even here on an island without my dogs I'm doing a half hour walk about 10 ![]() ![]() Ah that's great, congrats! Is this guideline realistic for most people? " Yeah absolutely. Some times I'm up near the 20k Mark, other days can be 5k, 7k, 10k, 12k.. Just depends. I've just checked my 12 month activity and it's registering 8k. What you've got to remember though is that 10k is just some random target someone somewhere has decided on and has more become the norm. Don't stress about it. If you're using your activity watch it means you're thinking about your health and fitness and therefore doing things that will positively impact on it. All good then... Keep it up and stop stressing! | |||

This is the longest I've ever managed to stick to an exercise plan and the most weight I've managed to lose out of all my very VERY frequent attempts. I think because I've finally found something that works for me and I know I can do it this time it's making me want to rush the process, and I feel disheartened when I'm not seeing overnight results, especially because 10k seems like a target that the average person should be able to hit. Definitely something I need to work on. | |||

Good luck ![]() ![]() ![]() Have you tried downloading 'My Fitness Pal' App? That's a great app that helped me lose a stone. You out your stats in then set a target weight. It helps you track daily your intake. Combine using that with exercise. Try mixing it up though. I find running to be great. I cycle a lot too but I appreciate that's not for everyone. Swimming is great too. Best of luck OP.. Stick with it and dont get stressed about it. Stress will equal depression and lead you to comfort eat of just give up . Don't let it get to you.. Reduce carbs per day to 30% of what you eat and eat lots of proteins and fibre. 20 mins of HIIT will burn more fat than 10k steps which take you well over an hour to do. No refined sugars at all, lots of water to hydrate etc and you’ll shred pounds. Myfitnesspal is a good place to know what you want and what it’s nutrients are doing for you. | |||

Am definitely noticing changes ![]() Congratulations on losing 31lbs!! As someone else said further up the thread progression overload and consistency is king! If you could only walk 5 mins without cramping and are now walking for 45mins that is a huge advancement in progress. Just keep aiming for a little more each week/month. Stretch your calves/hamstrings/quads before and after especially if you arent used to the longer distances. Drink water, make sure you get enough rest. If you struggle with 45 mins straight could you try two 30 mins walks within the day? I do 13,000 a day if I'm at work and I sit at a desk 12 hours a day. It can be done just have to sneak a few steps in here and there and they soon add up! | |||

Good luck ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Yep been using MFP for years to count calories but that never worked for me in terms of weight loss so counting my macros instead now and that has made an indescribable difference! Although logging food can be a pain as I've found quite a bit of their database to be incorrect so have to record manually/scan barcodes a lot. Finding exercise for me is tricky. I used to cycle as a kid but had a pretty bad accident that has led to me basically keeling right over whenever I try to get back on a bike. Swimming is also a no-no because I can't swim and I don't want to learn right now as I feel too self conscious wearing a swimming costume in public. I've tried running but it hurt my knees. I will stick with walking and home workouts on YouTube for the time being. And thank you for the motivation! ![]() | |||

Im a pretty fit runner, used to training for long distance events but if I have a marathon coming up I'll allow 3 months or so to train for it, longer ultras will see a 6 month training plan with the prior 6 months built around preparing for that plan. Don't expect miracles and do expect daily variations in how hard something feels, how much you achieve. There will be days where it feels too hard, where you feel like you're just going backwards. Don't let these days make you give up, the changes you want take time, lots of time so allow that and take pride in the changes as they happen. Am definitely noticing changes ![]() Thank you! Yeah I am super proud of what I have accomplished! But unfortunately it doesn't stop me thinking about how improvement I still have to make. One step at a time is easy in theory but frustrating in practice... I agree that being more active was definitely easier when I was working. Not that I was ever particularly active but at least I had all the walking through train stations, going to get lunch, mooching around the office etc. Now I just go from my bed to my sofa lol | |||

Am definitely noticing changes ![]() I feel you! I've lost 17.5lbs in 7 weeks. My regime is Strict! I do crossfit and bodybuilding training. My food is measured to the gram and I have to pass on meals out for the moment but that's what works for me but wouldn't work for everybody. I am still super frustrated with my profession and it isn't quick enough but I didn't gain all that fat in 2 months so why would I assume I could lose it in two months you know? You aren't alone and it's natural to feel like that once you start seeing progression. If you can only manage walking at the moment then walk. If you then feel up to HITT training or anything else then you can. Dont feel pressured but other people's progression etc only measure it on your achievement. Focus on the positives! Xx | |||

So not really a run as much as a very brisk walk. But I physically could not push harder to go faster than that and would tire around 15-20 mins in, when my walking would slow to basically a crawl and my "run" would not be much faster. So by walking at moderate effort of 4.5/5kmph for 45 minutes I am definitely getting more exercise and therefore fat loss than when I was doing the intervals. | |||

"It depends on what you do the rest of the time. You may only have time for a 45 minute dedicated walk but you can pick up plenty of steps in everyday life - we've just perfected the art of not having to with cars and lifts and chairs everywhere. You mention being tired by the effort and that is natural. Assuming you're counting these as a way of losing weight/getting fitter, it is important to realise these changes take months. Im a pretty fit runner, used to training for long distance events but if I have a marathon coming up I'll allow 3 months or so to train for it, longer ultras will see a 6 month training plan with the prior 6 months built around preparing for that plan. Don't expect miracles and do expect daily variations in how hard something feels, how much you achieve. There will be days where it feels too hard, where you feel like you're just going backwards. It took around 30 minutes and I would always complete the workout but what I am saying is 1) my "maximum effort" physically was not much more than my moderate effort and 2) with each interval my pace would slow and I would be physically capable of less and less as the workout went on. With HIIT you have to be able to keep up the effort at each interval. So for me it makes more sense to just walk normally for a longer time rather than tire myself out quickly. | |||

HIIT for 20 mins per day burns more fat throughout the day than 10k steps which take 90 mins. Nothing wrong with walking and some amount t of cardio is good but if you want to burn fat HIIT is proven to be the best way to burn fat alongside eating the right things and severely reducing your carb intake. | |||

I started a year ago and struggled to get 6000 a day. Now it’s a daily habit that I do some form of exercise. It gets easier and your health defo improves. I have incorporated HIIT and noticed the changes in my body shape. I do the Lucy Wyndham-Read ones as she does them for all abilities. | |||

Its about getting the heart pumping faster for a a period of time whilst working on burning fat throughout your whole body. No real risk of any injuries anymore than going for a run. | |||

For some people there would not be much difference between moderate and high effort, physically speaking. For beginners like myself with lots of fat to lose it would be better to start out gradually and wait to improve overall fitness and stamina before trying HIIT. Absolutely on the button ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm an advocate of hitt when appropriate I dont think when performed correctly there is much chance of long term negative effects The positive effects for cardiovascular strength over time are near certain If practiced with a progressive overload structured approach However it is more than rasing the heart rate it is working at near max heart rate and for many this is un nerving Also whatever poison one chooses its performed intensely it is recommend that the movement patterns are perfected first to form a "groove" Any rapid muscle contractions are a risk to soft tissue Delay onset muscle soreness guaranteed for the beginner Although studies can show hit statistically a good fat burner it's by a subtle amount and results are not consistent the severe glycogen depletion and oxygen deficit both in studies are shown statistically to increase eating in many cases cancelling any slight additional calorie burn I'm an advocate of walk before run , slow informed progressions, enjoyment and yet again consistency way above intensity Walking is also healing , strengthening tendons and ligaments whilst improving mobility and muscular balance | |||

"Does anyone truly get 10k steps in every day? I've been walking around 45 mins most days and find that usually equates to 5/6k steps depending on how fast I walk. That's usually enough to tire me out (although I am very obviously overweight), I couldn't imagine being able to fit double that into my day EVERY single day, not only effort-wise but also time-wise. Constantly on my feet for 7hours+" Same for me. 10+ hours on some days and not a chance to sit down. Constantly on my feet for the duration. 10k steps is nothing. I'm covering 8+ miles and I never move slowly. 5k in about 45 mins when I started to loose weight. I did it everyday and lost two stone in two months. Keep up the good work op. You'll get there | |||

"45 minutes a day? Is that just one session or spread out over the day? 10,000 steps is a target to aim for and if you're finding it hard then it is best to spread it out over the entire day. Little and often is the key. Same with any exercise, start small and build up. It's not about where you are now, but where you are in a year or so. Just keep trying and mix in some other exercises. You may only have time for a 45 minute dedicated walk but you can pick up plenty of steps in everyday life - we've just perfected the art of not having to with cars and lifts and chairs everywhere. You mention being tired by the effort and that is natural. Assuming you're counting these as a way of losing weight/getting fitter, it is important to realise these changes take months. Im a pretty fit runner, used to training for long distance events but if I have a marathon coming up I'll allow 3 months or so to train for it, longer ultras will see a 6 month training plan with the prior 6 months built around preparing for that plan. Don't expect miracles and do expect daily variations in how hard something feels, how much you achieve. There will be days where it feels too hard, where you feel like you're just going backwards. Don't let these days make you give up, the changes you want take time, lots of time so allow that and take pride in the changes as they happen. Good luck Thank you!
