Rudeness and Violence against shop staff is on the rise.

They keep the nation fed and watered. Respect to all retail staff on here.

Absolutely.

I read that some Co Op staff may start wearing bodycams due to the increased abuse they face.

That really is a horrendous state of affairs.

I worked in Supermarkets for over 10 years (around 10-15 years ago) admittedly it was in the back as a Baker. But it was nowhere near as bad as it is now, my sister who works on a checkout regularly gets sullen or aggressive customers now. Even before Covid

I've worked retail in the past and had some terrible moments with customers. But, I also had some really high and heartwarming moments that completely outweigh the bad.

I am thankful to not be working in retail with Covid!! I can only imagine how bad it is

No one should face abuse or poor service.

I am tired of certain sectors of society being portrayed as if they are making some huge sacrifice.

There are amazing shop assistants and there are utter shites.

All this fucking canonisation gets up my rectum.

it's a grim world at the moment.

It really does sadden me.

I had a mini meltdown at work yesterday and can't remember the last time I felt so defeated.

The one thing I have conjured up is "arsehole bingo"

Literally a bingo card that instead of numbers it's arsehole moves.

Example:

In response to being told we are fully booked for the evening, the arsehole spouts...

"Are you taking the piss? There's an empty fucking table right there" whilst pointing to a table that will be sat on by someone who has booked in about 15 mins time.

Had a woman moving tables and chairs around the night before last as they had booked 2 separate tables for 13 people, I explained they mustn't mingle between tables or move furniture, and that she needed to go back to her table and follow the rules or would be asked to leave. Her response to me was that I was using covid as an excuse for piss poor service.

I hate it right now so bad.

I don't want to go to work and I'm really really fucking close to knocking someone out. I even had a chat with my GM about it yesterday and told him I didn't trust myself to work because I'm at the end of my tether, I'm frayed, disheartened and quite simply... defeated.

I totally agree.

It works both ways.

We witnessed a shop assistant hit a customer before he went the wrong way to the till, she screamed at him and when I he asked her calm down as he didn't realise, she told him to get out and started to pull the basket off him, he was calm and said what is your problem she then waked him across the head.

It was nuts and totally all her fault.

Maybe there should be extra staff like security in restaurants and shops so that staff can do their usual job instead of having to confront people.

Everyone is stressed.

Have to say I haven't come across any aggro at all - not yet anyway.

You know what, yes she was wrong but I *can* understand it.

That's the point I'm getting to, breaking point. She was bang out of order, bang out of order and I don't condone it in any way, shape or form... but I do understand it.

There's only so many times you can get sworn at, ridiculed, told to go fuck yourself, told to "call the police then" when asking people to follow the rules. They're there for everyone's safety. The rules are also keeping people in jobs, because if places get closed back down that's those shop assistants, waitresses, bar staff all jobless and screwed over. I'm getting close to the edge because every time they break a rule, especially on purpose or because they've not listened, that's one step closer to me potentially being homeless due to being jobless, so yeah, I'm really fucking passionate about it and frustrated. How dare they play with my life like that?

I call breaking point "roast potatoes"

There was a manager at one of the carvery sites years ago. He was going through a tough time at home and then if it could go wrong it did go wrong at work. He had been working double shifts, sleeping 3 hours a night if that for a few weeks and pushing himself to the limit. One Sunday he was on the carving deck and was calling for roast potatoes.

Customers were getting aggy they were being kept waiting and one of them made a comment about him being a shit manager if he couldn't even sort out some taters on a Sunday. He left the station to go find out what the fuck was going on. One of the chefs had forgotten to put them in the oven.

That was his breaking point, his limit. He walked out of the kitchen and nobody saw him again.

It's far from upper class.

Mix of lovely humans and riff raff. Put it this way, there was a wonderful fellow on Thursday who told me to make sure there was no shit fucking pretend lettuce on his burger coz it ain't even real lettuce and he fucking hates it. I looked puzzled, and told him it's baby gem lettuce but it's cool if he doesn't want it, I'll make sure his burger is lettuce free.

He said I'd made it up, and that the only lettuce that's actually lettuce is iceberg, and if he did have pretend lettuce on his burger that I was fucked.

Later that evening a family who were super polite, couldn't thank me enough for helping with her dietary requirements and I was the first person who made her feel comfortable about it, didn't make a big deal about it and really seemed to care. They wrote in an told the GM how great I am.

It really is luck of the draw who you get seated and what kind of attitude they bring.

In truth I think it's that the lower management on duty are confident in asking people to leave or following through with it. That's part of the reason I spoke to my GM yesterday. I wanted him to give me his word that there would be no backlash for showing people the door.

I shit you not tho, eat out to help out days you get sworn at at least twice an hour by people who haven't booked a table and are told we're full. They can see an empty table and think you're lying.... give you a mouthful and then turn round and walk out.... straight out the door they came in which is now entrance only and has huge NO EXIT signs on it

It doesn't make it right.

Iv definitely noticed staff are a lot more abrupt and some seem to think they can speak to customers however they like then call the "im stressed card" everyone is stressed and in a lot of cases the staff make a bad situation worse.

I don't care how stressed that member of staff was she should not have been violent.

Nobody would be trying to excuse the behaviour if it had been the customer who lashed out.

Manchester (she/her)

I'm in a pretty middle class area and some people are so amazingly entitled. It gets on my tits.

Retail have been the front line. Pub and restaurant staff have been in some cases thrown to the wolves. FFS it won't kill you to wait. Slow down. Show some bloody respect for a fellow human doing the best they can in extremely difficult circumstances.

I appreciate that shop workers have been front line but I expect a level of service.

For example went in to Morrison’s wanted a bag for life as my ruck sack wasn’t big enough for what I wanted. Told we don’t have any. What in the shop was my response. Hmmm I doubt that. Asked another colleague, and was told here you are. The first employee did not want to look for them

Burger King was like waiting for them to kill the cow. I appreciate things will be slower but there is slower and taking the piss with no communication

Let’s me just clarify I know things will take a bit longer but there is a line between that and lazy fucks. I have been working all through lockdown and I have been putting in more hours than I get paid for. However I know I still have to be decent and give a level or service and communicate with my clients

Absolutely agree with communication.

I can't tell you how many times a day I begin to explain things to people, the new one way system, how things have changed and what to expect and I get spoken over, butted in or ignored.

Many are lovely and appreciate the level of care I display, but as above, the others have pushed me to my limit

All the people whinging about shop workers being rude, being stressed, over reacting should maybe think that they may have had to deal with 100 dickheads that day,,,and yesterday,,,and the day before.

Dickheads who can't follow simple instructions, can't follow a one way system when it's clearly marked out, dickheads who can't tell an in door from an out door when it's clearly marked, dickheads who don't know what two metres is even though it's clearly marked, dickheads who have a face mask covering their chin or none at all, coughing their germs all over the place.

I see all these dickhead behaviours all the time, I get stressed by them but I can just get away, the shop workers can't.

Some dickhead thinks they are entitled to a level of service so they are going to be a dickhead no matter what. Well,we all have to adapt a bit.Things are not like they used to be,we all have to get used to that.

Shop workers, bus drivers, station staff are not perfect, they are not angels, they are not robots. They are just people, trying to do a job and who get fed up with people who can't understand that things have changed, can't follow simple rules and act like whinging babies when they don't get everything their way. Nobody deserves to put up with that.

"All the people whinging about shop workers being rude, being stressed, over reacting should maybe think that they may have had to deal with 100 dickheads that day,,,and yesterday,,,and the day before.

I believe that *everyone* should have one customer facing retail job so that they can get some perspective, and maybe treat people a little nicer in future.

Agreed. I think politicians should have to work in a shop/pub for a year before going to parliament.

Some people are dicks.

I have got nothing bad to say about shop and restaurant workers during this pandemic. And I make sure they know it.

More respect and pay to them.

Rochester, Kent

I’ve worked in retail all my adult life (and even before adult life, in my family business)

It has definitely made me a better customer when I’m in other people’s shops!
