How to lose weight with walking.

It is not a secret, it is just another option on how to do it, so to lose a pound of fat a week you need to burn about 500 calories a day as a pound of fat contains 3500 calories, so in other words move more eat less.

I have chosen walking as my nr1 cardio option as it is fun and a good number of steps to do a day is about 10000 as that helps to create that deficit and it burns about 500 calories too, do you like walking and how many steps do you do? The only thing with walking is that you have to make time for it, but it is is worth it, when I walk I do it with intensity with this I mean you have to stop to catch your breath almost, it is like power walking

I walk alot as have 2dogs. I am a fast walker and do long strides as have long legs. To me it is the walking that keeps me slim and i would encourage everyone out there to walk more and enjoy the great outdoors at the same time.

I'm on a calorie deficit diet and counting my calorie intake per day and I'm losing weight effectively from this... currently on 17 stone weight loss

Any form of movement is good, but you do need to try and elevate your heart rate to be getting that cardio boost.

Most days hitting 10000 steps is a doddle, especially with walking my hound, but sometimes I do feel chained to my desk with work and the commute is only 20 steps from bedroom to desk

However, I also get out and run at least three times a week, and that's a much better workout

Last weekend I did around 14 miles, exploring new walking routes where I live. I listen to podcasts so I find myself lost in them whilst walking. I also have my watch exercise option open, so I’m often trying to improve on last weeks target as well.

"Cue the 'it doesn't work for everyone' brigade"

Walking with calorie control over a sustained period of time always works for any person who can

A walk

B restrict their calories lower than their expended

The key imo

Calorie control is the single most important

Most exercise will often lead to hunger over eating beyond the value of the exercise

Walking seems to bypass this mechanism and thus is a very useful tool

When calories are restricted in almost all cases ones daily burn also reduces as the body reduces its subtle movements let's call them fidgets

Thus many reduce their calories by x and the body reduces the energy used for fidgets and heat by x ending in weight stasis

Walking is the equivalent of a big fidget increasing heat and obviously movement but without a sever depletion of glycogen which in turn leads to devastating hunger

When I want to cut super low the only method that absolutely works always is reduced hitt and weight training and increased walking

For anyone who cannot walk

Low intensity swimming is its equivalent if not

A more effective

B less convenient

The absolute key is consistency to

A the calorie control

B daily walking

20 mins a day smashes 100 mins every 5 days

3 10 main walks a day are a virtual guarantee with reasonable calorie control

I gave a PT and he encourages walking for fat loss and fitness, and says its very underestimated. I have a 10,000 min step goal each day. I used to run and hurt my knee so I use walking as my main cardio along with some cycling and rowing. But it's been ramping up the walking that's helped the weight loss and its enjoyable.

I try to do 45 mins cardio every three days then have a rest day. Today was 15 min run, 15 mins row, 15 mins cycle.

Tomorrow will probably do 30 mins run mix with some weights

Mrs Blasphemy here...

I've lost 8 stone over the last 3 years, nothing special but did a total overhaul of my diet and exercise. I walk a lot (We have dogs) and cycle but mostly healthy eating and determination.

Anyone can do it if they really want to, maintaining a healthy balance is really important to me.

Much happier in my own body now.

I'm quite lucky really, my job involves me being on my feet for 9yrs a day, usually tot up over 11'000 steps every day.

I also cycle to/from work & cycle at least 3 times a week (Weather permitting).

All of which means I can hover around the 60-61kg mark without really trying.

Dieting and a brisk 45 minute walk every night without any exception was how i lost the first nearly 12st to get down from 29st10 to around 18st before i started the gym and cycling to go the rest of the way down to under 13st.

It was definitely the key to my personal success and probably the best first step anyone can start with.

I follow a calorie deficit which involves a minimum 5000 steps a day. Most of these are done walking from car park to work & round the department. I'd like to get up to 10k but I have excuses as to why I don't.

1. IBS issues have me wanting to stay near facilities

2. I find walking alone during my lunch break rather boring...

Both are excuses I intend to over come. I would like to lose around 2 1/2 stone so this is part of my plan.

Leaveing out crisps etc biscuits dairy products such as cream and even Ice cream when possible will go to help, and to space out any booze you might drink that for many people is a big ask unfortunately and at least to put your walking shoes on etc and go for a stroll a few times a week even to the shop/shops or around the park If that helps all good exercise.

Walking burns more calories than cycling. Running burns more calories than walking. And sex, burns the most calories "

"I absolutely detest walking for the sake of it.

It’s so bloody boring and pointless

It doesn’t improve my mood, in fact it tends to make me annoyed and het up."

As for life itself no " point" exists beyond the one or ones that one manifests for oneself

I'm fortunate that my mind is able to see a vast number of points some of which for my brain are

An increase in serotonin an increase in dopamine a reduction in cortisol an oxygen of all body parts especially the brain, a pace suitable for all senses to fully engage with the natural earth , a balance of musculature a re enforcment of posture a maintainer of agility and bone density a preventer of soft tissue pain

As for boredom again boredom is manifest from the activity of ones own mind . Whilst I have my senses and my thoughts boredom is unknown walking for me can be rhythmic as for me I can turn something rhythmic into a meditation

I like to observe and walking facilitates seeing a vast number of things otherwise over looked in fact that goes for all the senses

Personally I also practice orienteering and the wellbeing experienced from navigating is fulfilling

Beyond that teeth cleaning could be termed boring , cutting toe nails , washing clothes folding clothes cleaning vacuuming all potentially tedious but worth doing

I think shags point was

If you feel you want to lose fat then walking is an excellent method and indeed that alone for an individual who wanted the end goal of fat loss would be point enough

If a person does not want to lose fat then really this walking thread would be pointless

I will say with respect though

Please do not say you do not like walking (you can free world free speech)

However say it with caution and respect

There are people in the world and in fab who have had the gift taken from them .they would dearly love to walk I kinda feel it a tad disrespectful to brashly declare a disdain for walking

Apparently I can burn about 120kcal just playing 30min of recreational wheelchair basketball, but 220 at match intensity (damn the lack of competitive sport!)

Pushing at 3mph on the flat = 250kcal apparently. I should be shredded by now, because unless it's a steep hill, I push way faster than people walk and usually do 5-10k at a time. Sheesh.

I used to walk daily and it is definitely something I will be going back to.

I still do manage a couple of walks a week but I want to get it into a every weekday habit again.

I don't do it just to lose weight I do it because I like it, but if it helps me lose a couple of pounds that is certainly fabulous bonus.

I also need to remember to up my water intake as I know that will have health benefits including flush out my system.

I lost 70lb in 4 month walking and watching what I eat! I had a bad knee injury and suffered from shin splints and put a load of weight on in my depression from it. I went to the gym but was basically eating what I wanted and not gaining weight. One day I thought if I just put a bit of effort into my diet it will help me lose weight. I started eating better only have sweets once a week, then I started walking loads. I was doing about 50 miles a week. I started in August and hit my Christmas target at the end of September then I just kept going. Its really not that hard to lose weight if you just focus on diet and just get moving I know if you've got kids or you work 12 hours a day or health issues it's not ideal, but just try little things it will help and before you know it it's 6 months down the line and you're a few lbs lighter

"It is not a secret, it is just another option on how to do it, so to lose a pound of fat a week you need to burn about 500 calories a day as a pound of fat contains 3500 calories, so in other words move more eat less.

I have chosen walking as my nr1 cardio option as it is fun and a good number of steps to do a day is about 10000 as that helps to create that deficit and it burns about 500 calories too, do you like walking and how many steps do you do? The only thing with walking is that you have to make time for it, but it is is worth it, when I walk I do it with intensity with this I mean you have to stop to catch your breath almost, it is like power walking I'm on a calorie deficit diet and counting my calorie intake per day and I'm losing weight effectively from this... currently on 17 stone weight loss "

Thats amazing I am on calorie deficit as well.

Are you doing it with Team RH Fitness on Facebook by any chance?!

Highly recommend to anyone needing a kick up the bum and a realistic, life changing way of losing weight.

They worked out for me that if I walk 10,000 steps each and every day and eat 2000 calories then I will lose 2lbs a week. I walk more like 14,000 steps every day and have lost 3lb a week for the last 6 weeks consistenly. Its basically counting the macros in my fitnesspal. I don't feel like I'm on a diet, I'm eating without the need to binge for the first time in my life because I'm not depriving myself.

But walking/steps is definitely my favourite way of exercising.

Then there is the hidden benefits of walking, losing weight and improving general fitness. Recovery from injury takes less time, mental wellbeing, improved circulation, etc, better metabolism. Start walking and or exercising, the benefit is just not a visual one of weight loss.

As one PT instructor once said to me 'for those who can't find time for fitness now, will have to find time for illness later in life'

I did a lot of walking at the begining of lockdown and mostly enjoyed it however it caused damage and pain to my feet so i was less keen on walking then.

I also get a lot of bone pain and walking makes that worse so at the moment i'm being careful.

You should absolutely not walk until it causes pain

The pain in your feet should raise a why question and not either a dislike of walking or a continuation until pain occurs

My first instinct is better foot wear with a decent arch support

However I do not know and thus I recommend you find the reason

I'm also a huge advocate of walking poles adjusted correctly

It's painful with any amount of walking. I have excellent footwear and when needed i use a walking stick (i'd prefer to use crutches but i've weaned myself of them) I do know part of the reason, i sought help, had treatment and will continue to have treatment. However this coming week i will be doing a fair amount of walking and will be in pain.

The other part of the reason for the bone pain (and other issues)is being investigated via the NHS 2 week urgent pathway, i should know more during this week, hence i want to make the most of a few days away

It's far superior to cardio absolutely 100 percent genuinely

Cardio digs deep into glycogen intensifying hunger

Walking puts you directly into the fat burn zone

There are few short cut to fat loss

Just to add my two pennies, although not sure they're even worth that...

I used to have a manual labour job and pay rugby for the county, but then I went white collar and destroyed my body so I got fat.

I stayed fat for too many years, but ultimately what got me fit again wasn't walking a set distance etc, it was an entire shift in my mindset.

I went down to 1200 calories a day or less (not as hard as you'd think) and started drinking water like I should have been. I lost six stone in as many months and then some.

Over lockdown I went up to 11 stone 10, so I recently dieted for three weeks and lost seven pounds. That was just eating sensibly, below 1600 calories. It was pretty easy to do and the results were half a stone's weight loss.

Ultimately we can all do it, we're just lazy.

It's do difficult to loose weight.

I eat 1200 calories or slightly less and burn between 2000 to 2600 calories a day, but weight doesn't move much.

Exercising 5/6 times a week, with hiit/circuits/strength training/rowing/cycling, but weight not moving much after my initial loss.

I aim for 10 - 15000 steps a day.

I've been walking and cycling and calorie counting for 7 weeks now and I'm 19 lbs down

I still have 50lbs to go.

Most of the time I do an 18/6 fast which suits me at the moment - with one or 2 days off depending on life.

I had yesterday off for wine and cheese

I'm going cycling today to help burn some of it off.

I have flat feet so my ankles are hurting a bit from all the walking.

I've been doing challenges on Fitbit - This week I came second with 103,000 steps

"I walk alot as have 2dogs. I am a fast walker and do long strides as have long legs. To me it is the walking that keeps me slim and i would encourage everyone out there to walk more and enjoy the great outdoors at the same time."

agree,

I have two large powerful dogs and its got to the stage they now need to be walked single, so its two x 4 or 5 mile walks for me

"I'm on a calorie deficit diet and counting my calorie intake per day and I'm losing weight effectively from this... currently on 17 stone weight loss "

Diets are not sustainable though. So if you revert back to eating unhealthily the chances are you'll pile weight back on faster than before. That's because the body is intelligent. After being starved it thinks it needs to store fat because its going to be starved again.

Small portions often of a balanced diet with exercise is what is needed. Eating smaller portions often lets your body know it only has to take what it needs and not to store reserves, just incase.

Short cuts (ie diets) rarely work long term.

She is eating a deficit in order to lose weight.

I'm sure she knows she has to work out maintenance calories.

"It's do difficult to loose weight.

I eat 1200 calories or slightly less and burn between 2000 to 2600 calories a day, but weight doesn't move much.

Exercising 5/6 times a week, with hiit/circuits/strength training/rowing/cycling, but weight not moving much after my initial loss.

Mrs"

I dont wish to be blunt however

The facts are

If you are not losing any weight you are without any doubt NOT using as much energy than you are consuming

You may think you are or hope you are but it is simply not possible

IF your weight is static

And you are CERTAIN of your energy intake then your energy expenditure is Exactly that number

My point is that most diets consist of putting your body into starvation mode so it has no alternative to eat fat. This alone is not sustainable for most which is why in a lot of cases they not only put the weight back on they actually put on more weight.

Generally people don't get overweight by over eating alone, a big factor is lack of exercise.

The post I commented on only mentioned a calorie deficit diet (starving yourself) with no mention of exercise.
