Hi! I recently got chatting to a lady here. After two weeks of chatting, we met for lunch on Monday. The following morning she wrote to me saying that she hadn’t slept the whole night as her husband whom she had separated from had gone off with a new lover and had cleared their bank account and also taken the car she had bought a week ago. Her messages sounded very stressed and she mentioned she had to find £1500 by Saturday (today). She never asked me for any money directly and I didn’t offer anything apart from my support. Over the next two days we chatted about how unfair life was etc.... She even went on to post on her profile a status message announcing that, thanks to fab she had met the most wonderful man ever....and then without any explanation, on Thursday, she blocked me on fab and also on WhatsApp.

I am wondering whether I was the intended victim of a scammer or whether it was just a coincidence that I met her on the eve of her separated husband clearing their bank account.

I was just wondering if anyone else has been asked for money here. I want to make it clear that I wasn’t asked for any money directly. I suspect that she was hoping I would offer some money.

I think she probably realised I wasn’t buying into her sob story so she decided to cut me lose and move on to the next guy.

She then declares that she has found a fantastic new man and cuts you out

Scam. Could there have been a second man, one who she meant as 'the most wonderful man ever', who might have been less fortunate than you and dummied up 1500 pounds? You need to keep your head on a swivel these days, scammers are everywhere

I paid for lunch and wasn’t expecting her to pay as I always like to treat a lady.

We had been chatting for two weeks prior but nothing overtly sexy..... my flirting messages were often ignored.... and it was usually just general messages: how is your day going ? Etc

The funny thing is that she ordered two extra desserts as take away to take back home..... she is a live in nurse caring for a very elderly patient and the dessert was for the patient.... or so she says....

The lady whom I met also lives in Spain but works 6 weeks as a Live in nurse And goes back to Spain for 2 weeks before returning back for another 6 week shift.

Her profile was well written and her photo was verified. The green flag was showing . She had friends only photos which she showed me and a few days later she unfriended me. When I asked her why , she said I could always ask her if I wanted to see her photos.

So she was separated from her husband but still had a joint account with him and access to the car keys. Why would someone with a husband be a live in carer?

Sounds a weird setup to be normal. I guess when all you offered was support she cut her losses and moved onto the next potential victim.

She is a carer in London and spends 6 weeks in London and 2 weeks in Spain where she moved to with her husband many years ago and from whom she is now separated.

Her shifts are 6 weeks work, 2 weeks holiday and it starts all over again.

Yes, the eat out to help out discount was utilised. She offered her nhs card to get a discount but the restaurant said that the eat out to help out discount worked out better value.

You'll probably never know the truth of the matter OP and it's "possible" she was on the level and had other reasons for blocking/unfriending - but at face value you were right to be wary and for highlighting this.

There are many people completely taken in by scams like this who lose thousands and thousands of pounds to people who are scammers out to lead you on with tales of woe and false promises of repayment etc - the only thing that surprises me is that in this instance, if it was a scam, that she actually met you, as usually all manner of excuses follow as to why someone can't meet.
