Are supermarkets throwing away edible food?

Most of the wonky veg is now used to make the pre packed cut veggies on supermarket shelves . The presliced carrots and mash etc. There is more profit for farmers and shops selling them this way .

I remember watching a 60 minutes on this when in Australia couple years back, and the piles of bananas that were being left to rot was disgusting. All because they weren't the right shape

I buy wonky veg all the time it doesn't taste any different, it's just in a perfect world it ruins someone's clean lines in the kitchen

Yes that are alot of bananas too and I have seen similar programs about it, there really is no reason for them not to sell it.

Same here. I also buy wonky veg all the time. I dont mind that some are a different shapes

we grow our own as much as we can and its always wonky and funny shapes, all tastes the same its they way we are conditioned that something should look a certain way

That is right, you can use veg longer than the dates are published, they are there just for guidance as they cant sell a product without the dates on.

The supermarkets could actually help the homeless more as infact if they gave away all the food that can be eaten noone would go hungry

Try to buy wonky fruit and veg but my local Morrisons rarely has anything to offer. I did however get 4kg of wonky strawberries a couple of weeks ago which I duly turned into Strawberry jam.

They have done for ages. It’s all about insurance purposes nowadays.

I worked on a job in Leeds years ago,

When a ground worker struck an electric cable and cut off the power to a main store. Their fridges and freezers were off an hour max. And they threw everything away. There was skips full of ready meals absolutely nothing wrong with them and none of the lads were allowed to touch them.

I work at an anaerobic digestion plant processing food waste a lot of the waste we get from shops looks edible but they prefer to pay to get rid of it than reduce the price to the customer

Believe most vegetables achieved equality in the eyes of shops but customers are selected and leave the misshapen ones not believing they are equal...

There are subscription boxes like this, two I know are the won key veg box and I think the other is called the oddball box or the odd box. They specialise in taking veg that the farmers don’t sell or are surplus and sending them to you. My description isn’t doing it justice but if you look it up they explain it better.

That is right as well they dont. I pick the wonky ones as well. I dont mind it. I have a fun saying too about it "All veg matters"

Oh I thought this thread was going someehere else. Like short dated and damaged food.

We have different charities logged to collect such foods daily and many never turn up wasting the food

Check out each stores policy on how they deal with unsold products.

Many if not all them distribute to those that need it.

It's not thrown out as it used to be.

yes they do, alot of it is actually at cost of manufacture not the store, its exactly the same with electronic goods at cost of manufacture not the store, hence why they do not care about throwing out anything.

lots if not most supermarkets give edible but food they cant/don't want to sell to fare share or similar projects.
