I weld (nuclear coaded too) however car stuff is simply a spot at a time, as long as you move the heat around and not just in one spot so it dont distort

I went banger racing at Cannock and the old jags seemed to smash everything up and hold together.

I went the pits and looked inside and whoever welded the seat and H frame plus safety parts in should of been welding submarines and space shuttles up

Never seen such beautiful uniform flowing welds that made you realise that your getting hit hard .

Anyway I love a good weld on roll cages and car bodyshells

Every good welder I know it a pot head. One of the engineering works we use turn a blind eye to them popping out for a quick puff. These guys welding is of the highest quality

I've welded missile launchers on those subs, and all our D class destroyers, Jobs for the Atomic Wepons Group and the Large Hadron Colider, my big head can go on lol and I can tell you I'd rather do an ASME 6GR butt in low hydrogen rods than weld a car.

The very fact that your having welding it means its oxidised right through and rotten as a last weeks bananas... all you keep doing is filling the hole you just blew through and keep going till you manage to stop. As said I think by another poster cut back to as cleaner metal as you can and space out the heat by tacking and stitching, take the paint off first but don't grind too much of the base metal as your only making it thinner and easier to blow through.
