Let's have some sympathy for the young.

First they had their opportunities to live and work anywhere in Europe taken away by the votes of old people and a Brexiteer government

They they had their social lives wrecked by the need to shield those self-same old people

Now they are having their futures compromised by a bungling government who cant get their exam results properly sorted.

One can see why they might feel aggrieved

The exam results are down to the sympathetic grading of many teaches thinking it ok to bump up grades. The reality is there have always been grade boundaries so if its an easier exam or harder than previous years results adjusted. The reality is the plethora of people blaming the government is farcical its the namby pamby teachers who gave inflated grades are the true culprits in this fiasco.

Every generation has had its hardships. On the plus side, today's "young" generation have all the advantages of the digital age - information, knowledge and education all at their fingertips. Invented and created by "old" people

Technically they haven't actually completed their exams so they're slightly less qualified. I think it's last and next year's lot that should be moaning tbf. You can't just erase the effects of covid with a magic wand.....

Inflated grades are few and far between and tend not to be core subjects.

The problem was with the algorithm they used, not grade inflation. If a young person fails because they didn’t do well enough that they accept that but there is no way they should accept this system. They have lost uni places based on this and it’s wrong. You can’t get A*s in all your work and in your mocks and come out with a D during this and think that’s fair. It’s wrong.

The government have helped all sorts of groups during this crisis and they now need to help students. They cancelled exams in March - they should have come up with a working plan then. They should have shared that information and then maybe the fault would have been identified.

I think the students who have been robbed of what they should have got have every right to moan. I’m with them all the way. Gavin Williamson needs to get a grip of education, he’s almost as bad as Gove was and that’s saying something.

It's quite untrue that young people will not be able to work in Europe when we get our independence. They worked in Europe before the EU. At worst they will apply for a visa as people who work in other countries do. Let's not stir up hatred for the old please.

We have a young adult ‘child’ and she is living her best life!! She doesn’t begrudge us old fogeys at all. She’s at Uni, has a job, a busy social life (obviously it was better pre-covid but she’s still making the most of it), a boyfriend, a car, she’s financially independent and she could choose to work in Europe when she graduates, if she chooses to. Oh, and she’s pro-brexit.

Covid may have ruined her plans for holidays and festivals this year but she doesn’t resent anyone for it, she knows it’s a bit shit even for us oldies.

We’re very proud of her, she knows life is what you make it and you get nothing for free or by moaning.

Every generation blames the previous one for the problems in their life. To a large extent the problems that exist for youngsters today are a result of our actions but if they think that they're going to pave the way to utopia for the following generation, they're wrong

My Nepphew was predicted 3a’s. in his mocks he got 3b’s - and just about everyone I’ve ever known has got better grades in their actual exams than in mocks - as they work/revise harder leading up to them. The examining body gave him 3c’s. only because he was offered an unconditional place did he get into university.

Essentially - you’re talking out of your arse!

Op - I agree absolutely. I imagine we now have a younger generation who would never vote for Boris. I hope so anyway. Xx

They should have delivered the exams online in homes , the technology for remote assessment and invigilation has been around years, and is used extensively for professional and vocational qualifications. we made a lot of progress around 2003 and Ken Boston then head of what’s now Ofqual predicted all GCSE’s would be taken online within 10 years. Gove fucked up 10-15 years of progress the idiot

No. One can't see why they might feel aggrieved. One can see why they might whine.....

They have their whole life ahead of them. It doesn't garner any sympathy from me that people speak as if they've been put into a stalag and sentenced to death.

They are going to be just fine.

Maybe you think they'd be happier if we gave them guns to shoot the over 75's ...... so they could go to the pub with their pals.

Anyone can have a whinge about their circumstances, do I respect my elders that fought in WWII, of course, do I have empathy for those who haven't had the chance to be judged on their own merits by sitting their exams, yes, of course.

Do I respect or have time for people arguing about why it's all down to Brexit or the current government, no, because however I feel, the majority made that happen, that's democracy for you.

Being a bad loser is never an attractive trait.

As for Covid-19, we are all in it together and have to do our best, some are less at risk than others so it's up to each individual if they have respect for rules and guidance to protect themselves and others or if they take the attitude that they are low risk so are happy to take risks for themselves and the people they come into contact with.

Unions maybe...... the teachers are ignored. I'm amazed more people don't know this .....

Parents sometimes think that teachers run schools.... They don't. They have NO say in anything and NO respect.

You only have to look at how their judgements of their pupils that they have known for years were looked upon as inaccurate and the fate of the students put into the hands of OFQUAL who have NO knowledge of them whatsover at the behest of the government .....

So why blame teachers. They didn't close schools.

I still don’t get the teacher bashing, Its as though people still believe teachers only work 9-3 for 9 months of the year and earn extortionate wages allowing them 3 months of luxury holidays each year at ‘taxpayers expense’. Maybe that was the case 40 years ago but nowadays teachers are expected to be social workers, mental health support workers, parents, mentors etc. all whilst trying to educate 30 children of different needs and abilities at once. My teacher friends all start work around 7.30am and finish around 5.00pm only to go home and mark work as they don’t get a chance to do it in school hours with all the meetings, training etc they have once lessons have finished.

To believe they had a say in closing schools is ridiculous, it’s like saying Janet on till 4 in your local Primark was responsible for closing clothes shops across the UK.

Dont blame boris it's the teachers and the union thay could have easily gone in for the exams and distance themselves but got used to doing nothing for 4 months

End of.

They don’t get paid for those holidays so the taxpayers aren’t paying anything

Mine couldn’t look after themself in this country (am working on it!) let alone a foreign one, didn’t have much of a social life before lockdown but somehow managed to find a partner during it & finished their HNC with a merit. And delivered food to the shielding. Lockdown was possibly the best thing to happen to them. I have also see their cousins claiming their “lives are over”. Drama llamas.

But I've heard enough headmaster and mistresses on news saying not to go back instead of getting students in for exams plenty of room with the younger children off

The government cancelled the exams back in March. Nothing to do with the schools. "

Thay cancelled schools under pressure from teachers unions and head teachers.and not exams try to be honest thay love where schools and exams are right now

Each generation blames the last for the problems of the world to which they inherit. Each generation improves the world in which they live but all each new generation only sees the problems that remain. This is how it's always been and always will be. I wonder how many posters on this thread have ever worked outside the UK or Europe for that matter? I have worked many years in Europe, USA and South Africa. Sometimes with a visa but mainly within the EU. Brexit will definitely have an impact.! Already companies were stating that they didn’t want UK contractors as it’s easier to have EU workers instead. These are multi national companies it will be harder for next generation no doubt.

Ignore it as much as you want but there is a reason why all schools and unions were again the algorithm that decided the grades. This was due to bias in poor regions of the county. In simple terms if we followed that grading, it will carry on being rich kids for highly paid jobs and poor kids (with same skill levels or better) in worse paid jobs. So if you want to talk about ignorance i'd start by reading your first comment and pointing out everytime you show some set belief that you have and that it is biasing your opinion.

Sorry... Too many big words

Sorry I can’t get on board with your post . I have sympathy with everyone that has sacrificed so much to adhere to the rules that protect them and other people from this dreadful situation we find ourselves in.

Have the young in our community by in large done much to help the situation . I would hazard a guess and say no. Many examples out there of youths congregating in mass groups in parks in garden parties and at pubs. Their social lives are far from being wrecked ..shielding the vulnerable in our society is essential and everyone’s responsibility.

Yes the exam situation is a shambles and it’s not just those trying to get into university but many others out there who now depend on artificial grades For employment now and in the future. I don’t wish to down the young out there ..They are just not the only ones out there who have struggled through this .

There’s so much I could say about that reply but I’ll refrain and just say 200+ kids in an exam hall with invigilators would not have been able to safely sit their exams at my child’s school. And there would have been lots of pupils unable to sit exams because of shielding themselves or family members and that would have been very unfair for just those children to miss out.

Perhaps it could have been facilitated at a small/independent/private school but not in your average secondary school.

Yes, the system has been a shambles but we have to remember this is a first for everyone involved, I’m sure lessons have been learned.

Ultimately, the children didn’t sit exams because it was the safest option at the time.

You are so ill informed and ignorant to the facts unfortunately that you will never understand what actually happened. Schools didn’t and don’t make these decisions but you are unaware of this it would seem.

So the headmasters mistresses on the news refusing to go back is fake news now I understand that had a hand up there back mimicking done by the pupit master

You saw one person on the news? Who and when was that? Did it relate directly to exams? Teachers aren’t heads of schools.

Different ones every night if you read the earlier post I seid headmasters mistresses teachers union but didn't hear much about teachers wanting to go back to get the exams done in all those empty schools boris wanted you all back but can't make you all do what you wont do.now it's all came to this no one wants the blame but sorry you all to blame for the kids exams you dont see people clapping for teachers heads and unions "

You need to find better news sources because those really in the know have a very different story to tell. I would have thought a man of your age would know better than to believe the media spin on things.

I wonder how many other professions get blamed for everything that is wrong in the world?!

"The exam results are down to the sympathetic grading of many teaches thinking it ok to bump up grades. The reality is there have always been grade boundaries so if its an easier exam or harder than previous years results adjusted. The reality is the plethora of people blaming the government is farcical its the namby pamby teachers who gave inflated grades are the true culprits in this fiasco.

Maaannn... This comment really winds me up. Shows how little you know and trust teachers and their jobs.

Maaannn... This comment really winds me up. Shows how little you know and trust teachers and their jobs.

Best ignore, as I have found reasoning with daftness just results in........more daftness.

Wooaah there, Tiger. I meant ignore the twat who thinks teachers over estimate grades and are lazy blah blah etc. I'm a teacher, I'm on your side pal. I'm just sick of trying to argue the point with dickish people who are so convinced that teachers are useless etc, because it's pointless. The p making ridiculous comments about teachers are not going to change their tune unfortunately.

Well someone is useless it's not the government take your pick teachers headmasters mistresses teachers union at the end of the day the kids didn't get there exams when schools classrooms were empty to do the exams.just fukd it all up between you all.and I wouldn't be going round bragging your a teacher or headmaster mistress right now "

This comment just shows how much you k ow about your own government and how it all tricks down to schools. Let's just start at the point that there is noone to blame. Exams were not taken because of a public health risk. Example:if you find a bomb at your job you would not go because you could die (very exaggerated example but let it pass). So a new teaching method is implemented (ie. Online teaching). Now the issue of exams arise. As online exams are notoriously easy to cheat. What do schools and government do? Do they go to school, where the bomb could explode (and I repeat 'could') or find a new way of grading the students. This is where the government debated and many people are still debating. As opening schools even just for exams could have made the bomb explode (and we'd still be clapping the NHS from our porch in lockdown).

Here I've tried to explain to you why noone is to blame but we all have an opinion on what is best and what should be done. Teachers, headmasters and everyone else wanted to protect their families just like you want to protect yours I guess. Abit of time has gone by and we will see what the future holds for schools when they reopen.

When you read something or hear something from the new it's always important to see both sides before picking one.

Eeerrmmm... COVID-19 might be the cause of all this upheaval and the cancellation of exams. The decision to not go ahead was made by our government for the safety of the nation. I don’t think anyone made the decision lightly and I’m sure things may have played out differently if we’d all been given time to plan. But, I can guarantee teachers had no say in any of it, they’re just doing their job as instructed by their superiors.

You’re literally in a league of your own for ignorance. School staff are key workers and never stopped working. Schools opened for all the children who the government said could go in. Who looked after the children of the drs, nurses, supermarket workers etc? That’s right, schools.
