Sharm el Sheik...

There are some fabulous reefs at 10m and 20m...

There are plenty of Padi schools...

The visibility is endless...

There are fabulous boat trips and they give you plenty of surface time between dives...

And... The worlds best decompression unit is in the bay...

The corals are spectacular and the fish are like someone let a 3 year old loose with a colouring set...;-)

I did the open water padi diving course in Turkey.

It was fantastic I felt like 007 3 instructors n me,there's quite alot to learn about but it's well worth it.........enjoy where ever you dive

It's crap in Turkey for fish, coral n wrecks etc

I'd try Egypt or Australia

If you can afford it then the Barrier Reef in Australia takes lot of beating.

When I was in the army my mates helped bring the Mary rose up..... That'd be great diving on wrecks instead of diving on women when I'm wrecked

Me and my lad did our Padi training in a disussed quarry in the UK(wet suits not dry suits)Much more pleasant when diving in warm waters and we go every time we go on holiday...doesnt matter where...there are always some good dives to be had but agree Red Sea is spectacular.

As a PADI instructor who has dived all over the world I would definately say learn in the UK. If you can dive in our conditions you can dive anywhere.

If you want some help with who to approach happy to speak to you privately

Thank you so much for all your suggestions

Yes I've been told if I can dive with our currents then diving anywhere will be a doddle

I'd weigh up what it is you want most from the training -

is it to be certified, is it within a budget, is it certified and have incredible diving at the same time?

Partly depends on your free time, as going off to Indonesia etc, will all take more time. I think Egypt's a good compromise, as it's not too much long a long haul flight, the diving/sea is incredible, and you can sometimes pick up good bargains.

All training should be equivalent worldwide, as it's one standard - but it's worth researching shools etc.

Good luck!

One of my bessie mates is a diving instructor. It's worth considering if you learn better taught by a man or a woman - for some people there's no difference, but for some there is.

Most dive schools arrange trips and holidays to places like sharm with live-aboards etc. These can seem expensive but are often cheaper than arranging it yourself and they will also be able to do parts of your course while there - every dive counts and adds to your skills.

Have a good look at your dive school and others in your area, make sure you are well suited.and at ease with the instructors and the other divers. You'll learn more effectively that way and diving can be hazardous. Don't risk your health or life because you don't feel comfortable asking questions!

Have fun

Two places I (Pork) have been which I can advise are very good are the Sharm to Taba coast on the Red Sea riviera (we went to Nuweiba about four years ago and the scuba/PADI was excellent.

The other, but much more expensive option was Grand Cayman - fantastic sea-life and shallow waters for a long way off Seven Mile Beach - but a lottery win in advance is advisable!!

Completely agree with this comment. I passed my open water qualification yesterday in Wraysbury lake and the visibility was pretty poor. It’s an amazing feeling though, similar to passing your driving test, adventures await!!

West Coast Australia for mega fauna, not Barrier Reef. Much coal has bleached in Thailand, Seychelles (those places where it was good once upon a time).

Egypt is still great, some of best diving has been there. Mozambique and Zanzibar also good.
