At midnight, on the 12th of August, a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth. Across two hundred million miles of void, invisibly hurtling towards us, came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to Earth. As I watched, there was another jet of gas. It was another missile, starting on its way.

And that's how it was for the next ten nights. A flare, spurting out from Mars. Bright green, drawing a green mist behind it; a beautiful, but somehow disturbing sight. Ogilby, the astronomer, assured me we were in no danger. He was convinced there could be no living thing on that remote, forbidding planet.

Just saying

Then came the night the first missile approached Earth. It was thought to be an ordinary falling star, but the next day there was a huge crater in the middle of the Common, and Ogilvy came to examine what lay there. A cylinder, thirty yards across, glowing hot, and with faint sounds of movement coming from within. Suddenly the top began moving, rotating, unscrewing, and Ogilvy feared there was a man inside trying to escape. He rushed to the cylinder but the intense heat stopped him before he could burn himself on the metal...

The best musical ever in my opinion. Wasn't keen on the remake though, I'm an original lover!

You watch the TV show?

Mr

If i had to keep one piece of music and it be the only thing I could listen to again for the rest of my days it would be this.

It was part of my chuldhood and I've listened to it frequently ever since.

And im going to listen to it again in work tonight

Thunderchild always makes hubby cry... The ship has soul... It knows it can't win but its willing to sacrifice itself to let the ferry get away.. A bit like a faithful old hound that attacks so its owner can get away.. That's what hubby said anyway.. He won't be too pleased all you lot know now....

Let's say he isn't the only one who gets a lump in their throat at that scene....farewell Thunderchild and your valiant heart.

On a side note, Gary Barlow and Liam Neeson should burn by heat Ray for their truly abysmal re-make

If you haven't heard it yet, all I can say is don't.

I couldn't agree more, the updated version wasn't a patch on the original one...and only Justin Hayward sings forever Autumn perfectly

I really wanted to go see the live performance of this but I bet it doesn't come around again.

My absolute fave. Fond memories from childhood, sitting next to the record player, listening away and gazing at the album sleeve, amazing art work. Absolute bloomin’ classic. The stage show was also fabulous. Great, great music.
