...Become too Americanised?

For years Britain (and the world) has tried to be like America, the culture, the films, the music, the clothes etc.

We have succeeded in following that lifestyle but we have also followed in their footsteps with a society that claims/sues for anything, we are getting more obese, we have the drug problems, the immigration problems, the gang problems.

Not only are we changing our British language with Americanisms we are losing our identity too.

I'm guilty, I love the 40's, 50's, 60's car culture and films and styles.

What are your thoughts?

What with everything being available to everyone nowadays, TV, t'internet and wotnot (see how clever I am? ) everywhere get's influenced by other cultures to some degree... I know some people hate it but I don't. The world is getting smaller..would be nice it got friendlier too.

...although, I do hate that advert for washing powder where the 'kids' have a garage band.

well its one reason why I hate people talking about good old fashioned British values...everyone says they want them back...but that is just hypocrisy really.

theres too much interest in wider fields..our entertainment world is a prime example....and with that comes the loss of 'proper' national identity.

I'd term it like a biologist and say its random mutations that strengthen the future of a species...if everything remained isolated the genepool degenerates becoming inbred.

As long as we embrace the positive things from the American culture, then all is good !

I think there are influences stronger than Americana that threaten the UK's identity.

It is an unfortunate culture but America leads the way for the numerous gangs and their cultures.

No other country has as many police units dedicated to gang crime.

The Scots are tough bastards, granted, just look how many are in the SAS.

Back to Americanisations, even schools are following their trends of proms, limos and the rest. What ever happened to getting the eggs and flour out

Ah! Those were the days. We also signed our school blouses, now you need a Year Book. But someone would sue for causing health problems or not being allergy sensitive if we went back to the eggs and flour.

You can almost pinpoint the moment the world started speaking 'Americanese' - the day Windows 3.1 was released. Microsoft has changed people's lives for the better regardless of what they think of Microsoft as a company or Bill Gates as a person. - where would be without our laptops, or our smart phones, or wifi, or wii fits?

There is a sense of inevitability of globalisation - no matter how hard you may want to fight or limit it - it is impossible and there are many good reasons why you should not. Equally I would agree with those who sometimes feel that good traditions, values, beliefs and customs are lost alongside?

Many words we perceive as "American" are in fact English and fell out of use in our culture but not in theirs. So they are just coming home.

Yes I read that statistic-shortly after reading that one is more likely to be violently assaulted in Australia than anywhere else in the western world (UN statistics).

If it is to be argued that 'gang culture' is human nature then it has to be explained why it is that far from all human societies produce 'gangs".

"The Scots are tough bastards just look at how many are in the SAS".

The kind of British people who think being 'tough' is something to be admired might think the SAS and the SBS are really 'tough' But the Israelis think their army is the 'toughest' in the world. The Germans think their 'elite' 'special forces' such as GSG9 are the 'toughest', the Chinese think their 'special forces' are the 'toughest' too.

All governments and all military forces tell their people that their soldiers are the 'toughest'. It's basic psychology. After all what kind of general would say to his men 'well, your enemy is much 'tougher' than you are, but we want you to fight them anyway."?

The kind of French people who think being 'tough' is admirable think that their riot police, the CRS are really 'tough". Well I fought them on several demonstrations during the 70s and from what I saw, they were only 'tough' when confronted with people who were disorganised, unarmed and had no combat training. Confronted by a highly organised group of people who were armed as they were and had had combat training they broke and ran for cover.

And personally, if I had to put money on either a knife wielding Glaswegian lumpenproletarian (and it is only those types in Scotland who are violent) or a Tibetan Khampa nomad I would put it on the latter. He'd have his adversary's head off before he could say 'see you Jimmy".

I suppose u can use the word 'gang' subjectively, as I dont think for example, group of young men need to have an American influence to be in a 'gang'-the concept pre-dates modern society I'd say.

Compensation culture? Donoghue v Stevenson was pre world war two, and quite the most pathetic compensation claim I've ever read, but it set a precedent in English nd Scottish law - and on a veryy dodgy claim for nervous shock ...

Not dissimulator to the way Gaelic was over run by English. You have to ask if all the world will speak and Americanised version of English in the future with all that the US has to offer with it.
