I was sent abroad to attend school when I was 14, and did not have a very close relationship with my dad.
He died in 2005 due to smoking related illness, not unexpected, as I expected him to go much sooner due to excesses in his earlier years.
Unfortunately, due to excessive consumption of alcohol, bad memories of him outweighs the good ones significantly.
However, I do have a fond memory of an incident that occurred with I was about 12/3.
My mum got fed up of his d*unkeness, and decided to leave him to fend for himself one night. She took us to a nearby hotel for the night, and my siblings and I were having a whale of a time, watching TV, eating and drinking the contents of the mini bar etc...
Then my mum started to get worried, about him hurting himself by falling over or choking on his own vomit etc., and decided to go home instead, much to the kids' disapproval!
He calmed down significantly since that incident, as he knew my mum was capable of leaving him, which was something he always took for granted.
My mum and I would often joked and reminded him of this incident in his latter years, when he had to give up smoking and drinking due to health reasons.
Dad, Happy Father's Day, wherever you may be, and thanks for looking out for me.
